Sportsmanship

Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM), recently asked their Sportsmanship

Committee to explain their view on Sportsmanship. BCAM released the following article to

all basketball coaches and officials throughout Michigan.

Sportsmanship--Body Language (Todd Walden, BOCCC Member)

Early in the game, your point guard goes to the basket and misses a lay-up. He throws his

arms up in the air looking for a foul call. Former ESPN analyst and current University of

Arkansas Women's Basketball coach Jimmy Dykes said in a recent broadcast that "body

language NEVER whispers, body language always screams!" You can watch a game at

almost any level (middle school-N.B.A) and see negative body language towards officials,

opposing players, and even fans in the stands!

If our players continue to get the message that negative body language is acceptable, how

much success can we expect them to have in dealing with real world adversity? How will

they handle career conflicts? What kind of relationships will they be able to sustain? What

kind of parents will they be?

We, as educators (coaches and officials) need to take these "teachable moments" and talk to

our kids about what is acceptable and unacceptable body language. Doc Rivers said "We

have to fight EVERYDAY for our culture." What kind of culture do we want? And how

hard are we willing to fight for it?

Fulton is a K-12 State

accredited School

District.

Schools teaching

staff meet the Highly

Qualified criteria set by

MEAP RESULTS ARE IN

To improve student scores, the district is focusing on various strategies to prepare

our students. Current strategies are; utilizing additional support staff in the Title I

MARCH READING MONTH CELEBRATION

March has been an exciting month at Fulton Elementary! Students have been busy reading for our

March Is Reading month program. The theme this year was “Reading Under the Big Top.” The students

enjoyed a variety of themed activities such as “circus day,” “wacky Wednesday,” a “dress a clown”

relay race, and a “lion toss” through hoops of fire.

Throughout the month, students read an extraordinary amount of books. To represent the books we

read, each student was able to add a train car with their grade level’s animal to the circus train starting

at the March Is Reading Month showcase. The train extended all the way around the school to the

second grade hallway! There were 1, 105 train cars by our closing assembly on Thursday, March 27th

.

Every week during the month of March, students earned tickets for our weekly book drawing. Also

when students met their classroom goal they earned a ticket for our Nook drawings!

At our closing assembly one Nook and a $75 gift card for books were given away, thanks to our

wonderful PTO! Congratulations to Connor Cunningham and Zoe Bennett for being our 2014

Nook/Gift Card winners! Also congratulations to our top readers Macy Whitford (Mrs. Hauck),

Gratiot County Community

Foundation Provides Grant for

Exercise Bikes

The Fulton Elementary Schools Physical Education

Department was awarded $1,820.00 dollars in grant

monies from the Gratiot County Community Foundation.

The Foundation utilized monies generated from the Clyde

and Maude Mizer Memorial Fund.

The money was used to purchase two exercise bikes and

eight heart rate monitors. The items are being used to

provide a supplemental exercise option to students who

experience excessive stress on their knee joints, as well

as students needing to rehabilitate injuries.

The Fulton Schools is very appreciative of the generous

donation from the foundation. The exercise bikes are a

great way to keep students interested in physical education

class by teaching students physical fitness can be as easy

as riding a bike. They are being used daily by both students

and staff.

So Get Up and Exercise!

2014 Prom

The Junior-Senior Prom was celebrated on May 3, 2014, at Hawk Hollow of Bath. The

event featured a dance, light snacks, refreshments, and the crowning of the 2014 Prom

Queen and King.

The theme for Prom was “Mardi Gras”. Students had a great time celebrating the night

with their classmates. In between dancing and snacking, each student voted on who

should represent their school as the 2014 Prom Queen and King.

Congratulations to DJ Lambert for being recognized as the 2014 Prom King, and

congratulations to Amber Litwiller for being recognized as our 2014 Prom Queen.

The event was followed by Project Graduation. It is designed to keep students safe and

monitored throughout Prom night. Without so many supporters, the night could not have

been as fun filled and safe as it was. Thank you to all of our community supporters for
