INTRODUCTION The clash sphere generator is a tool by BIM One that helps project coordinators to communicate clashes location more efficiently to

the design team.

Once the report is exported by Autodesk Navisworks® in XML format, the tool is able to read locations and create clash spheres in the

building information model. Each sphere is identified by an identification number stored in the report which makes it easier to track and

solve using Revit schedules.

Besides information about selected objects, the clash sphere generator gives you an ability to store information about issue status and

the team member assigned to solve it. Processed issues can be marked ‘completed’ and comments can be added, which means that

only active issues and not the entire BIM model need to be communicated between team members. This capability enables a powerful

and open collaboration workflow between all parties during the design and building process.

Using the clash sphere generator results in a more efficient and accurate workflow because communication within a project, and

between team members is improved as well as eliminating the need to transfer large BIM files over the Internet. The clash sphere

generator focuses on the process and how to cooperate with different BIM software.

Benefits

No additional model checking software training required.

Review clashes in their original context to easily solve them.

Improved collaboration workflow.

Saves you model checking software licenses.

No need to transfer large file over the Internet.

USER INTERFACE

1. Browse for Autodesk Navisworks® XML report

2. Clash quantity pre-processing

3. Create clash sphere(s) in a new linked model option

4. Filename and folder path

5. Clash sphere status/color selector

6. Import button

STEPS

Browse Autodesk Navisworks® Report

You will be prompted to select clash report(s) exported in XML from Autodesk Navisworks®. The pre-processing field will display the

number of files selected and the number of detected clashes.

Create Clash Sphere in a new linked model

Filename and Folder Path

If the “Create clash spheres(s) in a new linked model” option is

selected, a separate file will be created at the specified folder

path and linked in the current Revit model. To ensure the

tractability of clashes and resolution, a new linked model can be

created at each major milestone of your project.

Options

Automatic clash sphere color based on status

You can check that option if you want to use the status in the xml report to automatically chose the right sphere color for you. If nos

status has been exported in the report, the color selected in the manual color selector will be used.

Clash Sphere Color

Clash sphere colors can be set to the same color code used in Autodesk Navisworks® to ensure

an improved communication between modellers and coordinators. It is recommended to change

spheres color to update the clash resolution status along the way and to use schedules to transfer

information between team members.

RED – New Clash

ORANGE – Active

BLUE – Reviewed Clash

GREEN – Approved

YELLOW – Resolved

Importation Progress

Once you click on “Import” button, you will see a progress bar showing the importation progress of the clash spheres.

A dialog box will show you the resulting number of clash spheres generated once the importation is complete.

Schedules For each xml report imported, a schedule will be created. Only the clashes corresponding to that report will be displayed in that report

to avoid mixing up clashes among all the imported reports. You can use the schedules to easily manage the status of each clash during

its resolution.

INTEROPERABILITY (Revit®→Naviworks®→Revit®)

Export Navisworks® Cache file (.nwc) from Revit

To properly export a Navisworks® Cache file from Revit, the Autodesk Navisworks NWC export utility®

must be installed on your computer. Once it is installed in Revit®, you can find the NWC Export utility

under the add-ins – External Commands button – Navisworks 2014

Clash Detection in Autodesk Navisworks Please refer to http://help.autodesk.com/view/NAV/2014/ENU/ for additional informations about the clash detection process in

Autodesk Navisworks®.

Export Clash Report (.XML) from Navisworks

1. Test summary

2. Report content selection

3. Clashes organization

4. Clash status filter

5. Export format and export button

6. Export button

Content Selection

To ensure that the clash sphere importation process is successful, you need to at least include the “Clash Point” parameter so the

Clash Sphere Generator can read it properly and places the spheres at the correct locations.

Clashes Groups

If you are sorting your clashes by group in Navisworks®, make sure to select one of the following options:

Individual Clashes Only

Everything

The “Group Header Only” option should not be used because information will be missing in the report.

Units

All units available in Navisworks® are supported and converted by our add-in to support world-wide unit systems.

You can select the unit type and precision you want to use in the XML report using Navisworks® options. This information will be used

to define the location in Revit®.

Once you have selected the fields to include in the report, export the clash report in XML format.

ADD-IN LIMITATIONS

Navisworks® transformation tools

As Revit and Navisworks need to both share the same coordinates system, the Navisworks

transformation tools are not supported by our add-in because it transforms the coordinates during the

process.

BEST PRACTICES Make sure all models share the same origin (your models needs to be aligned when using origin to origin insertion point in Revit). To

verify the location of the origin, follow these steps:

1. Unclip the Project base point

2. Right click on the project base point and on the option “Move to Startup Location”

3. Compare the origin of the models.

4. If the origins of the models aren’t the same, you may need to move the spheres or the sphere

file to the adequate position.
