Winners of many Regional Skills Competitions receive CCC tuition waivers! Tuition waivers can be applied to any term for up to two years after high school graduation. Students must email the Office of

Financial Aid and Scholarships ([email protected]) with their

full name, CCC student ID number, and a request to apply their Skills Competition tuition waiver to their

CCC classes in a specific term. Awards are identified in the Skills Competition booklet for each contest. In general, tuition waivers are awarded for 1st place (12 credits), 2nd place (8 credits) and 3rd place (4 credits). Tuition waivers could save you up to $1,200 in tuition!Winners will still be responsible for all fees, all books, and any tuition not covered by a waiver.

SUMMARY:

Every student participating in the Clackamas Regional Skills Competition is automatically eligible to compete in CCC’s Amazing Race. Students will be provided with a map and can visit several locations to learn about CCC and participate in various challenging activities. Participants are able to complete the Amazing Race at either the Oregon City or the Harmony campus!

This game can be played along with competing in many other competitions during Skills Day.

Skills or knowledge needed: Open to students of all levels.

The goal in this event is to use logic, process of elimination, or both to identify each of six numbered aqueous inorganic solutions.

Skills or knowledge needed: Students will need a background in general chemistry solubility and identification of inorganic salts.

Do you like solving puzzles and breaking codes? The growth of the cloud, artificial intelligence, big data, and other digital technologies is driving the need for increased data security. Digital data is often encrypted before being transmitted and then decrypted by the recipient to prevent eavesdropping and information theft. This is an individual contest to decrypt messages that have been encrypted in various formats.

Skills or knowledge needed: Open to students of all levels. No pre-existing knowledge of programming or encryption algorithms is required.

CCC instructors use this simulation in the Case Management course for Corrections, Juvenile Corrections, and Human Services students; however, it has broad appeal and interest for almost anyone who is interested in how society treats the formerly incarcerated. In addition to corrections and human services, students who are interested in social work, criminology, law enforcement, psychology, public health, and other people-oriented lines of work would enjoy and benefit from this activity.

This exercise should help students better understand: • Who is coming out of prison, and what is the first month like for

them? • Why do some people go back to prison after their release? • What can be done to increase the likelihood of success for people

re-entering their communities? Participants will have an opportunity to share feelings about the experience, as well as seek solutions to these important, complex and difficult issues.

This skills competition will provide participants with a fun, hands-on opportunity to create a learning experience that can be used in an early childhood setting with a preschool aged child, 3-5 years old.

Teachers use this understanding of both learners and subject matter to plan lessons which maximize learning for their students and to present instruction in an engaging and meaningful manner to their classes. This contest will allow you to demonstrate your mastery of the art, science, and profession of teaching while presenting a mini-lesson to an audience of aspiring and experienced educators.

Skills or knowledge needed: Students will select a topic they feel passionate about sharing and determine the best way to teach this information to others.

Come demonstrate your ability to build and test Electronic Circuits. Tutorials will be given before the competition for those that want to try. Both the tutorial session and the competitions are drop-in; students do not have to stay the whole time. There will be a Beginning and Advanced competition running simultaneously.

Skills or knowledge needed: The advanced competition is for students who have taken a class in basic electronics.

Design and construct your own bridge at home! Come to Clackamas ready to test your bridge, and load it with weights until it breaks! We will provide the testing set up, the loading platform, and weights for testing. Your goal should be to maximize the strength ratio of the bridge, which in engineering is a quantity that describes the amount of weight a structure can support compared to the weight of the structure itself. You will get to load your own bridge until it breaks, and then enjoy watching others’ bridges get destroyed!

Read all instructions on the Skills Competition website carefully! Any bridges that do not meet the specifications will be disqualified.

SUMMARY

Design the logo (identity mark) for next year’s Skills Competition! • Design must not include any text, and represent the essence of

Clackamas Regional Skills Competition. Designs should be simple, bold and graphic. Both hand-drawn and digitally-drawn designs are accepted. Hand-drawn designs will need to be scanned and submitted as an electronic file (300 dpi JPEG).

• Design must be camera ready, black and white only (no color or grayscale) black ink on smooth white paper or laser printer output. No pencil. Clip art should not be used, original art only.

• Designs must be presented in both 4”x4” and 1”x1” sizes on a single 8.5 x11 sheet of white paper. List student name, grade, and school on lower right-hand corner. (No larger than 2” by 2”).

Medical Assisting program will show you the ins and outs of an EKG, take a look at pond water or blood cells under a microscope with our Clinical Laboratory Assisting instructors, learn some basic CPR skills in the Emergency Medical Technician lab, tour the fully operational Dental Assistant lab, see a few skills that you would learn as a Certified Nursing Assistant I or II and meet with the director of our newest program, Billing and Coding.

There will be current and former students on hand to answer questions about how their experiences have been in school and what life is like now that they have graduated and started their new careers in healthcare. Show off your music skills at the Music Department of CCC! The Music Department hosts a contest of performance and creation to talented high school students. Bring your instrument or voice and show off your solo performance in a prepared piece, or if you’re an electronic music creator, bring something you have created. We welcome all styles of music, including classical, jazz, singer/songwriter, and any original work. Meet our faculty who teach Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Vocal Jazz, Chamber Choir, and our Contemporary Music Ensemble, who will adjudicate performances and give feedback to your talent!

Performances will be judged on merit of tone, rhythm, performance, and creativity. You may provide your own accompanist or you may choose to have CCC’s piano instructor, Yoko Miyama, accompany you. If you choose our accompanist, you must provide a copy of your music to [email protected] no later than April 2, 2020. There will be a piano available to those who wish to utilize it as well as amplification for electronic works. Other equipment needs MUST be approved in advance by emailing Ami Collofello and gaining CCC instructor approval.

Teams will make the concentration system outside of this competition and bring it to be tested during the competition. A solar cell will be provided for testing.

Design and build a solar concentrator for a photovoltaic cell. Your team will need to create a solar concentration system for one solar cell and produce more electricity over a period of one hour. The higher the concentration the faster the solar cell will degrade, so be creative on how to concentrate your cells and/or cool them.

Cells will be tested for power, temperature and visually inspected for wear. The concentrator will be evaluated for simplicity, robustness, ingenuity and professionalism. The group with highest power, lowest temperature and lowest wear to the cell wins.

This challenge has students individually identifying 15 common rocks and 10 common minerals. After the ID portion of the challenge, Teams of students (2/team) participate in a quiz bowl answering geology questions. Questions are related to rocks and minerals, geologic/tectonic settings, geologic time and Oregon’s geology.

Skills or knowledge needed: Students should know how to identify minerals based on their properties. They should have an understanding and the ability to identify different rock types based on the characteristics observed in the rocks. Students should have a basic knowledge of general geologic topics such as plate tectonics, geologic time, rock formation and surface processes. Additionally, students should have a familiarity with the major geologic events that have shaped Oregon.

Contestants will compete using various welding practices depending on which section they are registered for. These practices may include GMAW, GTAW, OAW, and SMAW. Each weldment will be judged and scored based off of the criteria on the blueprints (available on contest website) as well as visual inspection of the welds. Fit up, layout, and weld size are important in this event.

Each contestant may only compete in one welding contest. If a contestant enters more than one contest, the lower level entries will be disregarded. Registration is limited to four contestants from each school in the advanced contest due to space and equipment availability. Students are encouraged to bring their own welding gear and tools.
