TRAINING COURSES - ITALY

The ‘A. Marchetti’ Training Academy is located in Sesto Calende, Italy, next to Lago Maggiore, some sixty kilometres from Milan and just south of the Italian Alps that tower over the region.

The Training Academy is named after the Italian engineer Alessandro Marchetti, who led the design of the Savoia-Marchetti aircraft, including the famous S.M.79 Sparviero. The Academy was officially opened in July 2006 and is located on the site of the former flying boat factory Società Idrovolanti Alta Italia (SIAI) founded in 1915.

The Training Academy boasts a new and very busy training school with 18 dedicated classrooms and a maintenance training hangar with two full systems trainers, linked with multi-screen Computer Based Training and Emulations. Two Full Flight Simulators for the AW109 and AW139 were commissioned against demanding civil JAR-STD-1H Level D standards in June 2006. These devices are of a roll-on-roll-off (RORO) configuration where different cockpit types roll on and roll off a common motion base and visual system. Later in 2008, a new cockpit for the AW109 LUH will join the system at Sesto Calende and a new full flight simulator for the AW139 will be commissioned in the USA. The simulation is provided by the Rotorsim partnership between AgustaWestland and CAE.

SIMULATOR TRAINING DEVICES

AgustaWestland supplies Flight Training Devices (FTD) to provide training at operational facilities.

The FTD is a device that has been completely designed and manufactured by AgustaWestland, making extensive use of commercial off the shelf parts and incorporating state of the art design features. The system comprises a full-size replica of the cockpit on a fixed base, with pilot and co-pilot flight controls replicated and controlled via a digital control loading system that reproduces the force and feel of the aircraft flight controls. All instruments and panels inside the cockpit are replicated, to the same shape and size of the real instruments.

The FTD allows pilots to be trained within a synthetic visual scenario that reproduces a specific geographic area generated by geo-specific aerial imagery and terrain elevation data. 3D Dynamic Ocean has been included to provide a realistic sea environment for offshore, search and rescue and ship deck landing purposes. The visual database is projected onto a spherical screen that provides 180° of horizontal field of view and 50° of vertical field of view, providing valuable visual cues to the pilots.

The simulation environment can be set-up and controlled from the AgustaWestland Instructor Operating Station (IOS). FTD can be provided with an off-board IOS console, equipped with multiple LCD displays allowing visual and audio connection to the cockpit, and/or with an on-board IOS positioned just behind the pilot seats on the cockpit and equipped with touch-screen displays. A wide set of helicopter malfunctions can be selected on the IOS and injected in the simulation model during the flight sortie.

Students will start their FTD sessions by planning their flight on the Flight Planning System (FPS) connected to the IOS and simulating the operational environment.

The FTD provides a comprehensive training capability for the normal aircraft operations and emergency procedures in a simulated environment. It allows pilots to perform cockpit familiarisation, use of autopilot basic and upper modes, engine management (manual, automatic and mixed modes), flight and radio management system familiarisation, IFR and VFR operations, and CAT A operations.

AgustaWestland FTDs may be tailored to meet the specific needs of each customer.

The AgustaWestland Virtual Interactive Procedural Trainer (VIPT) is a computer based simulator with a high fidelity graphical reproduction of the helicopter cockpit to deliver cost-effective procedural and familiarisation training. This system enables pilots to learn by practicing introduction to service, conversion and recurrent training tasks.

The student interacts with the helicopter systems through simulated instruments and panels, supporting training in basic spatial cockpit orientation and systems familiarisation tasks including electrical and hydraulic system management, radio management, AFCS familiarisation, navigation planning and real-world navigation.

All simulated systems respond to pilot inputs as per the aircraft; this includes a wide range of malfunctions that may be injected to train for abnormal conditions. Instrument responses and failure modes are replicated so that students can practice recognising failures and taking the necessary remedial action, thereby ensuring fast and appropriate responses to external non pre-planned events in the air.

The VIPT can be easily re-configured to represent different aircraft types and to simulate the systems and instruments required to meet the training task, with physical configurations including; deployable desk-top and lap-top layouts, a subset of the cockpit man machine interface, or as an open flight deck that replicates cockpit dimensions with accurate spatial distribution of the simulated instruments. It can also be equipped with primary flight controls, an Instructor Operating Station to control the training sessions and a small Out-of-The-Window display for basic VFR operations.

The AgustaWestland VIPT is a flexible and easily re-configurable system that can cover a wide range of aircraft types and training needs; including cockpit and instrument familiarisation, normal and emergency procedures, IFR flight management and navigation.
