Believe it or not, in a few months the hot weather will be here again and children will want to cool off by playing in the water. The City of San Jose has various aquatic offerings for all ages and abilities from swimming

lessons to open recreation swim times. Involving children when they are young in safe structured aquatics programs such as those offered by the City of San Jose and its partners, can begin a lifelong relationship with the

water which can bring happiness for years to come.

POOL LOCATIONS

Enrolling your children in a learn-to-swim program can be confusing with many options available so here is some useful information to help you make this all important decision a bit easier.

Participants must know the skills stated below prior to participating in the class. For participants signing up for multiple sessions staff recommends a minimum of two sessions in one level before going to the next level (i.e. Two sessions of level 2 then two sessions of level three). For returning participants staff recommends at minimum one session of the class you ended with from the 2012 Summer to start the 2013 Summer (i.e. Participant graduated from level 2 last summer should take one session of level 2 as a refresher)

Staff will assess all participants throughout the summer to ensure the participant is in the appropriate class

Adult/Child participation (ACP) - Child must be accompanied by an adult in the water at all times. The child must be at least 6 months old. Participants pay only one class fee per child + adult combo

Tot Class - Does not meet the pool’s minimum height requirement. Child is between the ages of 3 and 5 and is ready for beginning swim lessons.

Level 1 - Does meet the pool’s minimum height requirement. (Camden and Mayfair 42”) Child is ready for beginning swim lessons.

Level 2 - Does meet the pool’s minimum height requirement. (Camden and Mayfair 42”) Can float on their front & back, and enter & exit the pool without any help.

If yes to all continue, if no to any of the skills participants should be enrolled for Level 1

Level 3 - Does meet the pool’s minimum height requirement. (Camden and Mayfair 42”) Can swim 15 feet on their front (freestyle) and 15 feet on their back (backstroke) without help


Level 4 - Can swim 15 yards on their front while breathing turns their to the side and does not lift their head forward, swim 15 yards on their back, and tread water for 30 seconds.


Level 5 - Can swim 25 yards freestyle with side breathing, 25 yards backstroke, 15 yards breaststroke, 15 yards butterfly, 15 yards elementary backstroke and tread water for 1 minute.


Level 6 - Can swim 50 yards freestyle, 50 yards backstroke, 25 yards breaststroke, 25 yards elementary backstroke, 25 yards sidestroke, 25 yards butterfly and tread water for 2 minutes.


Junior Life guarding - Must be able to perform level 4 skills or higher.

Competitive Swim – Must be able to handle endurance based workouts and completed Level 5.

Class Descriptions

SPRING 2014

Tot Class

Tot Class Swim Lessons are taught to children whom do not meet the pool's minimum height requirement. Level 1 skills are taught to the participants.

Adult Child Participation

Designed for children under the pool's height requirement to have fun in the water, while developing swimming readiness. Course content includes Levels 1-3 as skills progress. All children must be accompanied by an adult in the water.

Level I Water Exploration

Water introduction emphasizes basic floating skills that can be built on as they progress (i.e. water adjustment, submerging face, supported floating and kicking). Student must meet the pools minimum height requirement.

Level 2 Primary Skills

Designed for students who are adjusted to the water and can perform water movement skills including arm movement and leg kicks. Students will practice unsupported floating, flutter kicking, turning over and the combined stroke. Students must be able to perform level 1 skills: float relaxed 10 seconds (front/back); glide 10 feet (front/back).

Level 3 Stroke Readiness

Introduction of basic swim strokes. Students practice coordinating the components of the front & back crawl, review elementary backstroke and treading water. Students will be introduced to deep water. Students must be able to perform Level 2 skills: Combine stroke on front and back, turning over back to front and front to back.

Level 4 Stroke Development

Emphasizes reinforcement of the basic swim strokes with an emphasis on confidence and competency in Level 3 skills. Students should be comfortable in deep water. Students will build endurance by swimming elementary backstroke, front crawl and back crawl at increased distances. Students will also learn the basics of breaststroke, sidestroke, and turning at the wall.

Level 5 Stroke Refinement

Students will work on the coordination, endurance and refinement of the key strokes presented in Level 4. The basic rulers of diving will be reviewed. New skills to be introduced: feet first surface diving, dolphin kick and underwater swimming.

Level 6 Skill Proficiency

Students will polish the strokes presented in previous levels with greater ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. New skills to be introduced: the pike surface dive, tuck surface dive and additional turns.

Adult Swim

Open to adults ages 18 years and over. This class is intended for beginning to intermediate swimmers.

Junior Lifeguard

Designed to prepare students for Lifeguard Training. This class will teach you how to perform a rescue safely, use a backboard, and activate an Emergency Action Plan. Students must have passed a swim Level 4 (Stroke Development) or higher in order to enroll.

Competitive Swim

Designed for children looking to prepare for a swim team and gain swimming endurance. Students will receive structured
