The docks stretched rom the City oLondon to Tilbury, some thirty miles awayin the Thames Estuary. Painters and writerswould travel here to nd inspiration in thespectacular maze o great warehouses andmagnicent ships, where merchants, sailorsand artisans all gathered busily around aconstant cargo o tea, indigo, silk, carpets indeed any commodity you could think o.

Islands landscape and public spacesdraw inspiration rom both the visual

language o the maritime era and thenatural and cultural ecosystems thatbelong to all islands, whether tropical orurban. With several dierent designersbringing complementary but diversevisions to dierent parts o the Island,creating a multi-aceted and multi-layeredexperience that changes with every hour,day and season.

Swathed in gingko trees City Islandwill, on approach, be a lush, almost exoticpresence. The trees lime green hue inspring transorms to a bright, warm yellowin autumn. It blends with sot shades oriver and sky but orms a dened contrast

with the islands sharp red bridge andwalkways. This shade o red is drawnrom local history, rom the nineteenth-

century merchant ships that valued clarityand visibility as a priority in everythingrom map making to painted ship hulls,a maritime colour choice echoed incontemporary shipping containers. Strandso the red will run through the island, aunique orm o way-making that will helpvisitors to navigate their way betweenpublic spaces, waterways and buildings.

On the watery limits o City Islandis Waterline Park, a network o tidalterraces, jetties, knolls and platorms thatallow close contact with the river. Somepromontories allow you to sit out on a rockand look over the water, while others shootright down to the waters edge and take ina lower horizon to those visible rom streetlevel. Further north, towards Island Bridge,a paved square orms a kind o islandmarketplace, ramed by simple sculpturalorms, elevated orest islands and a lightcolumn or night-time illumination.
