HOME IS WHERE THE FAMILY IS The idea, dream, and reality of family is so strong and durable that we use it to describe all that is best about human gatherings. We speak of the family of nations, of our church and parish fam-ilies. The greatest compliment we can pay a friend or gracious host is to say that we feel at home with them, we feel part of the family. Families are the first crucibles in which love is tested and tem-pered. Jesus himself was one of three people who lived in the shadow of each other. This family, like our own, did not always “get it right,” but they always tried to. These three “amateurs” were on holiday, and one of them got lost. Two were worried sick and took great measures to find the third, a boy after all, who was seeking the meaning of his calling. He found his voca-tion—to do his Father’s work—but he also returned home with his parents. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today’s feast is new as feasts go, and it sets us this year in a very modern crisis. Amid conflicting schedules and commitments, a young man, testing the limits, has strayed from his parents and gone off to the big city. Mary and Joseph search frantically, only to find the child Jesus in the temple, conversing with the elders and scholars of the law, who are amazed at his wisdom. In the time of Jesus, the temple was the religious cen-ter of Jewish ritual. Outside of Jerusalem, people gathered in the synagogues, centers of learning, for daily prayer and study. Still, everyone longed to journey to the temple to participate in the offerings, and to fulfill certain obligations of the law that could only be done there. On this feast, we catch a glimpse of the family of Jesus: parents dealing with the normal stresses of raising a child, and yet completely grounded in the ways of faith and tradition. There has always been an appreciation in Christianity for the value of pilgrimage—the journey to holy places that is a symbol of our life’s journey to God, and a sense of connection to important events in our family history. Dur-ing the Christmas season, many of us undertake pilgrimag-es to the family homestead for festival meals, to the parish-es where we were formed in the faith, or perhaps even to a beautiful manger scene or festival of lights. There are few better days than this in our calendar for spending time with the family, especially on a short pilgrimage to a favorite place. Just make sure that no one gets left behind! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

St. Vincent de Paul There will be a collection this weekend for our Society of St. Vincent de Paul. This collection is our outreach to help those in need in our parish. We appreciate your support.

WARM BLANKETS FOR THOSE WITH COLD NOSES…

OUR FURRY FRIENDS GET MIGHTY COLD THIS TIME OF YEAR!

So, our Confirmation class is seeking your help. We are collecting blankets and towels to help warm up those COLD cages in our local animal shelters. This is your chance to clean out that linen closet and get rid of your old, your tired, your torn. The things that are no longer fit for humans may be just the right thing for a cold puppy or kitty...please help us to help them. We will be accepting your donations on the following weekends ONLY: January 12 & 13 and January 19 & 20 Thank you for helping us make some sad little

lives a bit warmer and nicer. “If you have men who will exclude any of

God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with

their fellow men.” ~ St. Francis of Assisi

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL”

The Proclamation of the Gospel—#269

The spiritual savour of being a people

Jesus himself is the model of this method of evange-lization which brings us to the very heart of his peo-ple. How good it is for us to contemplate the close-ness which he shows to everyone! If he speaks to someone, he looks into their eyes with deep love and concern: “Jesus, looking upon him, loved him” (Mk 10:21). We see how accessible he is, as he draws near the blind man (cf. Mk 10:46-52) and eats and drinks with sinners (cf. Mk 2:16) without worrying about being thought a glutton and a drunkard himself (cf. Mt 11:19). We see his sensitivity in allowing a sinful woman to anoint his feet (cf. Lk 7:36-50) and in receiving Nicodemus by night (cf. Jn 3:1-15). Je-sus’ sacrifice on the cross is nothing else than the culmination of the way he lived his entire life. Moved by his example, we want to enter fully into the fabric of society, sharing the lives of all, listening to their concerns, helping them materially and spirit-ually in their needs, rejoicing with those who rejoice, weeping with those who weep; arm in arm with oth-ers, we are committed to building a new world. But we do so not from a sense of obligation, not as a bur-densome duty, but as the result of a personal deci-sion which brings us joy and gives meaning to our lives.

Fr. Terry’s Remarks— In our Seminary training, we are taught all about diction, eye contact, stance. etc. But they seem to forget to remind us constantly that if we wish to evangelize we must model our-selves on the Master. This is how Jesus did it; '' Jesus looking at him, loved him.'' (Mk 10:1) Jesus ate and drank with sinners without worrying about what oth-ers would say or think. We have to worry all the time about what others think and say. All through the Gospels, Jesus puts the needs of the people he is evangelizing first and foremost. That is the essence of Evangelization. The Christmas season, as we gaze on the Child in the Manger, we are witnessing firsthand what constitutes evangelization. It is not a big word, it is not a philosophy, it is not a skill or technique. It is all about being fully present to the one to be evangelized. The homily of Christmas is a poor babe, lying there helpless but at the same time so powerful for you and me. Take it or leave it.
