There, in the 13th century, a band of European men gathered together to live a simple life of prayer and witness to the Good News of Jesus Christ. Their first chapel was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. They called themselves the Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. In the 16th century in Spain, St. Teresa of Avila (1515-1582) renewed the Carmelite Order. With St. John of the Cross (1542- 1591), she strengthened the Order’s commitment to follow Christ through an intense life of prayer for the good of all the Church. They and their spiritual descendants were known as the Discalcedor reformedCarmelites. encouraging in each person the ability to reflect Teresa’s critical spirit, fostering social coexistence, Teresa’s style of fraternity. It is an experience of God which leads to discovering God within oneself and to giving to life a meaning based on the theological virtues; it is a Christological experience leading to the historical Christ of the Gospel; the experience of Church, such as belonging to it and preoccupation for its good. Experiencing God and the desire for communion with him, as a witness and a response to the religious dimension of man; the saving experience in Jesus of a humanity deeply needing purification and liberation; the fraternity of a Teresian community as a characteristic sign of the social and relational aspirations of the person of today, always in search of communication and friendship; the theological and Christological view of man; contemplation of the world from Christ crucified and risen, present and operating in history, as an attitude of creative hope for people committed to a better world; the life of prayer as an experience of God’s transcendence revealed in Christ Jesus; asceticism as detachment from what is superfluous and availability for human beings; encouraging in each person the ability to reflect Teresa’s critical spirit, fostering social coexistence, Teresa’s style of fraternity. Carmelite Seculars are a family of lay and religious men and women, sons and daughters of the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St Teresa of Jesus, who share the same charism, each according to our particular state of life. It is one family with the same spiritual possessions, the same call to holiness (cf. Ep 1:4; 1 P 1:15) and the same apostolic mission. Secular members contribute to the Order the benefits proper to their secular state of life.(Constitutions #1)
