Mass Intentions From the Pastor’s Desk

The week after Christmas, a daughter asked her mother to stop the car when they

drove past Sacred Heart. The child wanted to go into the church and see how the baby Jesus was

doing. She remembered that Jesus had been born there a few days ago, and she wanted to make

sure he was okay. The mother tried to explain it was a ‘pageant’ that the child had seen. She won-dered who would feed the baby Jesus. The moth-

er, realizing that adult explanations would never break through, said that some of the shepherds

had decided to stay behind and they would bring in food for Mary and Joseph to feed to Jesus.

This made excellent sense to the child, who was then willing to ride on knowing that baby Jesus was going to be taken care of.

Young children live in a world of ‘the concrete’. They have not yet developed the con-

ceptual capacities to understand the difference between a pageant and real life, between a sym-

bol and an idea. As far as this little girl was con-cerned, baby Jesus had literally been born in our church. She had seen it with her own eyes, and

no amount of adult explanation was going to al-ter the reality of that simple fact.

Before we dismiss the child's perception as naïve or immature, we need to consider the

power of her conviction. The child's simplicity leads her to raise a question that we adults, with all of our sophisticated conceptual abilities, may

have ignored: who will feed the baby Jesus? The bluntness of the girl's concern compels us to

come to terms with the ethical implications of Christ's birth. What Isaiah prophesied becomes

true: "A little child shall lead them" (Is 11:6).

I believe the story reveals why we adults love to watch the children in church during

Christmas: the children put us back in touch with a world of wonder, and they reawaken perceptu-

al capacities that have been buried by the burden of our adult lives. Msgr. Frank Kelley

The Holy Family of Jesus , Mary and Joseph

The example of the Holy Family can be summed up in the words of today’s second reading. They were clothed in “heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another…” This feast of-fers all families the inspiration and encouragement to make these values an essential part of each relation-ship, conversation and interaction with one another. Pray in a special way today for all parents, grandpar-ents, and guardians as they strive to make their fami-lies holy.

Today’s Liturgy

‘Twas the Light Before Christmas

‘Twas the Light Before Christmas that lit up the land, It guided the Magi over the hot desert sands.

They followed the light so high in the sky It would bring them to the manger where Jesus

did lie. They brought gifts of gold, frankincense and

myrrh, Then they were gone in a flash to be seen no more.

Then an angel appeared and told the family you must leave,

For the cruel king Herod had something wicked up his sleeve.

Up Mary, Joseph, up Jesus for you’ve only a while,

To travel to safety in the land of the Nile. Over time an angel appeared and soon they

would learn, Herod had died, it was safe to return.

Like Moses long before who left in such haste, The family would leave, they’d no time to waste.

So, they left for the land of the fisherman’s nets, Here the Nazarene would pay the most awesome

of debts. He’d preach in the temple, the desert, the hill,

‘Til Christ the Messiah the prophecy was fulfilled. So good night to all and to all a good night, Peace reigns on earth because of that one special

light. Bill Walsh

Why are babies baptized?

Aren’t they too young to accept Jesus? Obviously infants cannot understand the change of allegiance, the putting off of the old and putting on of

the new, or the sharing in the life of Christ. However, the parents of those infants can understand and live those values and pass them on to their children. They can also experience the support of the community in liv-

ing those ideals, and that is extremely important. Infant baptism makes sense only if parents are true Christian disciples. If they are not, then it makes little sense to initiate their children into a Church which

calls for a commitment to living the mission of Christ. The Baptism for Children emphasizes the im-portance of faithfulness on the part of parents when it

says to parents: “In asking to have your children bap-

tized, you are accepting the responsibility of training

them in the practice of the faith.” That word practice

is crucial; it calls for Christian modeling on the part of parents. Children learn to be Christian by osmosis, by experiencing Christianity at home. The “domestic

church” prepares children for the local and world Church. It is in the home, in the domestic church, that children first learn basic trust which is the foundation of faith. Without the experience of faith, hope and commit-

ment in the home, children will not be able to know and understand the larger Church. Msgr. Frank Kelley

MISSION STATEMENT Rooted in the universal call to discipleship, the mission of Sacred Heart and St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Roslindale and Forest Hills is to preach Jesus Christ. Proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ takes many forms: preaching, wor-

ship, education, service, works of mercy, and evangelization. The staff and the congregation are guided by the overall mission to proclaim the victory of Jesus Christ over sin and death in this time and place.

By this mission we are to be judged.
