Mass Intentions From the Pastor’s Desk

Wedding banns

I Wanda Suriel & Michael Dupuis

Holy communion with the precious blood. Next weekend we will return to receive communion in the bread and the wine. Since the beginning of the year we have received communion only with the bread. We have held back from the precious blood in the form of wine due to health concerns with the ‘flu’ sea-son. We have received word from the Arch-bishop that the Commonwealth believes the danger of sickness has passed. At the Masses next weekend, we will resume our practice of holy communion in the form of bread and wine. As we begin again, please keep in mind the sacred actions of re-ceiving communion with the cup. Please take your time in receiving communion. We do not rush. We aid our elderly and our young people. Remember that these youngsters observe us very closely. They learn respect for our sacra-ments, when we show that respect in our be-havior. CATHOLIC APPEAL, 2019 Last week our

pledges passed 50%. Thank you for your pledge to the Catholic Appeal. In two months, we have reached 50% of our goal. Thus far, we have pledged $23,402.00 from 141 parish members. Our average contribu-tion is $160.00. Please make your pledge soon to enable us to meet our parish goal.

To join our Parish-wide effort, please find an ORANGE in-pew envelope at the back of the Church or donate online at bos-toncatholicappeal.org. A second appeal let-ter will be sent out to those parish members who have not yet been able to make a pledge gift. Please make you pledge either online or at the rectory.

Thank you, Msgr. Frank Kelley

Third Sunday of Easter

In the first reading, St. Paul is ordered”to

stop teaching in that name.” That is, he was to stop teaching about Jesus. But Paul gives a clear

response, “We must obey God rather than men.” Paul was willing to face trial and suffering rather than stop speaking about Jesus. The gospel pre-

sents us with the magnificent story of Jesus’ love and mercy. Having denied Jesus three times, Je-

sus now gives Peter three opportunities to show his love. We can hear the strength of that love in

each response, “Lord, you know everything, you know that I love you.” Are you willing to speak with the same conviction we here in Paul and

Peter?

Lent “Socks for the Shelter” Collection

000 changes of clothing. Thank you for helping!

Thank You for Donating Online! Thank you to all who responded to our Lenten message and became a recurring online donor at

Sacred Heart. Our Church continues to grow with you and your fellow parishioners who sup-

port our vision and ministries on a consistent ba-sis. Because of your dedication and generosity to our parish, we can continue to serve those we are

called to help—we couldn’t do it without you!

TODAY’S LITURGY

In this week’s gospel, Jesus gives Peter

a directive: “if you love me, tend my sheep”. Pe-

ter has a history of grand pronouncements of

faith, often followed by human weakness en-

gendered by fear. And yet Jesus still has faith

in him. “If you love me, tend my sheep” is

Jesus’ most challenging directive of faith yet.

It is easier to show faith in something that is

in front of you, i.e. when Jesus is standing

among you. But Jesus is here preparing for

his ascension, and he needs to ensure that Pe-

ter and the others will carry on the work that

he began on earth. Therefore, he charges

them that if they have faith, build this com-

munity of believers.

As we all know, following the lessons

that Jesus taught can be difficult. It can be

thankless, it can be frustrating, and it can

cause us to question why we’re even trying.

This is where faith and community come in.

Peter was going on a fishing trip after a very

difficult few weeks, and his friends said: “We

also will come with you.” The disciples were

not catching anything, but Jesus told them to

cast the net one more time. They did and

filled the net to bursting. When we are dis-

heartened in the difficult work of building a

community of love, we must support one an-

other with love and friendship, and we must

have the faith to always cast our net one

more time. Isaac Buck

Sacred Heart Roslindale Celebrates 125 Years

The Tenth Pastor Arrives . . . Father Vartzelis, the ninth pastor, left Sacred Heart in February 1991. His associates, along with Father Maguire and Father Schoenhofen in residence, carried on until June, when Fa-ther Francis H. Kelley was installed as the tenth pastor at Sacred Heart. Most Reverend Lawrence Riley, Auxiliary Bishop of Boston, presided over the liturgy. Bob Newman pre-sided over the music for the service. And members of the Parish Council gave Father Kelley the signs of the pastor’s office.

Father Kelley continued the church’s tradition of involvement in both the local and greater Boston community. He continued to host the monthly meeting of community leaders initiated by Father Vartzelis. He blessed streets, dedicated bridges, and presided over the naming of squares honoring community residents. Under his leadership, Sa-cred Heart began a program of regular charitable donations, giving a percentage of the weekly collection to community, archdiocesan, and national groups serving as the hands of Christ. He brought Sacred Heart into the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization (GBIO). And he worked tirelessly for the homeless of Boston through the Pine Street Inn, where he currently serves as Chairman. Like his predecessors, Father Kelley faced a continual list of mainte-nance projects and the need to raise funds to pay for them. Parishion-ers organized the annual parish Golf Tournament in 1997 as a regular fund-raising activity. A major campaign in 2006-2007 raised $700,000 for Project Slate to repair the church’s failing slate roof, repoint, and redecorate the church building. And Sacred Heart School raised more than $1,000,000 during its centennial campaign in 2017-2018. Just two years after becoming its pastor, in 1993, Father Kelley cele-brated the centennial of Sacred Heart’s founding. In his reflection on the future of the parish, he emphasized the strengths that had carried the parish through its first 100 years: the faithfulness of Sacred had been shaped by “a love of worship, an enjoyment of life, a desire to learn, and a tolerance for one another.” All of these traits were high-lighted during the centennial celebrations, from the opening Mass to the Barbecue that harked back to the original Ox Roast, from the his-tory of the parish commissioned from local historian Neil Savage to the inclusion of a nascent African community that had begun to join the Italian, the Hispanic, and the Haitian communities that had al-ready found a home at Sacred Heart. *Based on The Centennial History of Sacred Heart Parish by Neil J. Savage.

ELECTION FOR PARISH COUNCIL Last Thursday evening 60 members of our parish gathered to begin the discernment prayer for the election of our parish council. For this month of May these men and women will pray 10 minutes a day, asking God to reveal to them whether they are called to serve on the parish council of Sacred Heart. Please take time in your prayers to pray for these

parish members too. I told them on Thursday that this is not

a matter of “I should do this”. Rather the Question is,

“What does God want me to do for Sacred Heart

parish?” Please keep these people in your prayers

for this month. Msgr. Frank Kelley
