Our summertime offers us ‘vacation’ time. This time away from the demands of work—earning a living—offers the body and the mind and the spirit rest and relaxation.

♦ Leisure affords us a precious opportunity to spend time with relatives, to visit with family and friends

♦ Vacation offers me peace and time for hu-man contacts.

♦ Holiday offers us free time for prayer, reading, contemplation, conversations with God.

♦ Summer time is when re ‘recreate’ our-selves; relaxation heals us, blesses us.

Enjoy!

OPERATION BACKPACK

St. Vincent de Paul has a special re-quest that we would like to ask you - our fellow parishioners - for help with. We are being asked to help with the purchase of 30 backpacks for children in our school that need them to transport and protect the tablets they are using for school work. Each backpack costs approximately $45. These will be used during the school year by those in need. So we are asking our parishioners that are able, to ‘sponsor a backpack’ and contribute $45 to St. Vincent de Paul. Or sponsor 1/2 of a backpack. Of course any contribution of any size will help a great deal. Please send or drop off any contribu-tion to the rectory. Make checks payable to St. Vincent de Paul Society. Your help for those in need is always appreciated.

July 10 - Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Timeless words from Moses: “...heed the voice of the LORD, your God, and keep his com-mandments and statutes…,” Moses reminds us that the commandments are readily accessible. In fact, they are ‘already in your mouths and in your hearts; you have only to carry it out.” Love God, love your neighbor. Jesus tells the beautiful story of the Good Samaritan - a story with such a universal message it is the common under-standing of kindness. It is a story of mercy. The Year of Mercy is more than half over. What spir-itual or corporal works of mercy have you built into your daily life? It’s not too late to start.

REFLECTION ON THE GOSPELOF LUKE 15th Sunday of the Year C

We might have heard one or two people tell us: “Yes, but this is our way of doing it here.” That is to say, we do it this way according to our tradi-tion. Tradition is good for it fosters unity and identity. Yet in maintaining identity, it promotes also differences by means of our badges, flags, uniforms, political parties, tribes, race, religion, etc. (If you are not with us, then you are against us.) Just as loyalty to a group promotes the growth of its members, intense loyalty generates hostility towards outsiders. In today’s Gospel, Jesus tackles the problem of intense loyalty to a tradition using the old antago-nism between the Jews and the Samaritans. Each has their tradition, which says the other is not good and does not deserve respect. The hero of Jesus’ parable is the Samaritan. Why did the pious Jews not stop to help the victim of robbery? The priest and Levite could not stop be-cause they were in a hurry to fulfill a tradition. Tradition, therefore, forced them to continue walking. Tradition prevented them from showing compassion, and even justified their callousness. The Samaritan, on the other hand, showed com-passion because he disobeyed and refused the dic-tates of tradition to walk on and ignore the suffer-ing man. He did not allow tradition to hold him captive nor to quench the flame of love in his heart for mankind. By this story, Jesus wants us to be aware of tradi-tions, for some are bad. A bad tradition, be it reli-gious, cultural, racial, national, is one that invites us to despise people, to the extent of denying them compassion when they are in dire need. Je-sus recommends that faced with such a tradition, we be become disloyal to that tradition as the Sa-maritan did. If to love one’s neighbour means be-ing disloyal to your tradition, then disloyalty in this instance becomes a virtue. For Jesus, our ulti-mate loyalty is to love (love of God and of neigh-bour). Rev. Peter Ayorogo

Fundación Latidos de Amor (Heartbeats of

Love Foundation) is a registered non-profit organization established since 2013 to raise the quality of life for poor and homeless chil-dren in the Dominican Republic. The founda-tion is run by Juan and Ana Chavez, both ac-tive parishioners in our parish for about 10 years. In 2014 this organization collected kids clothing and in 2015 school supplies and then brought them to Dominican Republic and dis-tributed to the most poor areas in the country. This year’s goal is to collect 3,000 pairs of kids shoes, new or gently used, it does not matter what size or brand. If you would like to do-nate, there will be a box at the back of the church where they can be dropped off before July 31st or call 617-407-6980.

XV DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO

1ra. lectura: (Deuteronomio 30, 10-14).
