Reflections ˜ Reflexiones GGospel: Mark 16:15-20 This is the closing scene from Matthew's Gospel. The eleven disciples have returned to Galilee after receive the good news of the resurrection from Mary Magdalene. At their first sight of the risen Lord, the disciples still cannot shake off all their doubt. But when Jesus speaks, they recognize his voice and his message. They are to go, baptize, and teach. They are to invite all nations to become disciples of Jesus Christ. Sometimes we might get the idea that this happened such a long time ago, and the "going, baptizing, and teaching" were for the apostles and not for us today. Of course the apostles and their successors—the pope and bishops, and their helpers, the priests—have a great responsibility here. But the rest of us also belong to the "priesthood of the faithful." We also can go to others, reach out with a helping hand, a friendly welcome, a listening ear. We can "baptize" others, not with water (unless it is an emergency and the one we are baptizing is in danger of death), but with our prayers, our love, and our concern. We can teach the way of Jesus in the best way possible—by our example. Every follower of Jesus is an apostle in this way. And we can do this because Jesus is with us always, to the end! 1.) How will you "go, baptize, and teach" today, in your particular situation, with and for the people God has placed in your life? Are you ready and willing to be an apostle today?

PERSEVERANCE

Life would be so much easier if Jesus were still walking the earth. Think of the benefits. We would have proof that he lived, died, and rose again. We really could get an answer to "What would Jesus do?" But think of the temptations: "Lord, find me a job." "Please cure my friend." We might neglect responsibilities to be with him. Jesus commanded his disciples to proclaim the Good News. He promised the Holy Spirit's power to help them persevere and do extraordinary things in his name. Then he returned to his place at God's right hand. At our baptism, we received the same power from on high as the disciples, and we’re "clothed in Christ." For us to persevere as followers of Jesus we continually need the power of the Holy Spirit. Let us set aside time each day, as the first disciples did, to pray as we approach Pentecost. PERSEVERANCIA

MISSION STATEMENT Today we celebrate Christ’s ascension into heaven and his commissioning of the disciples to carry on his mission in the world. First we hear Luke’s description of those events in the opening verses of the Acts of the Apostles. Next we hear words of encouragement and guidance from the Letter to the Ephesians. Finally we hear Mark’s account of the Ascension, foretelling the mighty words and acts the Christian community would do in Jesus’ name. Together these scriptures give us a vision of the mission of the church of Jesus Christ—a mission statement of sorts. Like mission statements in our parishes and corporations, this mission statement can help us set priorities and focus our activities. It can guide and support us as we strive to continue Christ’s messianic mission on earth.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Happy Mother s Day! from The

Church of the Epiphany The most important person on earth is A Mother. She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built something more magnificent than any cathedral: a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby’s body. The angels have not been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in God’s creative miracle to bring new saints to Heaven. Only a human mother can. Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creature; God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation. What on God’s good Earth is more glorious than this: To be a mother? - Cardinal Józef Mindszenty (March 29, 1892-May 6, 1975) Archbishop of Esztergom, Prince Primate of Hungary and Servant of God
