Reflections ~ Reflexiones

CCHHAALLLLEENNGGEE TTOO CCHHAANNGGEE At this time of the year farmers and gardeners begin to see the fruits of all their labors. They sowed more seed than they needed, as not all survive and produce. The parable of the sower offers layers of new meaning. In Jesus' day, following the Law of Moses was said to assure abundant

blessings. Jesus demonstrated that following the rules and living the life are not the same. Why does the seed of the word not bear fruit in everyone? Jesus quotes Isaiah, who describes people as dull of hearing with their eyes shut. Jesus says that if people really hear and really see, they might have to change. Do we really hear the word and allow it to take root in our lives, or do we push it to the edges or choke it? Disciples are the ones who water and nurture it, asking Jesus to help them produce abundant fruit. CCooppyyrriigghhtt ((cc)) 22001100,, WWoorrlldd LLiibbrraarryy PPuubblliiccaattiioonnss..

Copyright (c) 2010, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

GGOOSSPPEELL MMAATTTTHHEEWW:: 1133:: 11--2233 oorr 1133:: 11--99 The parable of the sower is one of Jesus' best-known stories. It is filled with word-pictures that can take root in our memories. We can see the sower, or the farmer, tossing handfuls of seed left and right. And when Jesus describes the four different kinds of soil that the seed falls on, we can compare ourselves to one of those categories. How sad it is that so much of the seed does not bear fruit. Yet the word of God does not return to God empty. There will always be enough people of "good soil" to see and hear and do the work of God. The reign of God will come!

1.) Do you know any "good soil" people? Describe one or two whom you know. What kind of soil do you think you are? Will you be ready today to let the word of God grow in your heart?

FFrruuiitt ooff tthhee WWoorrdd:: The seed is the word of God. The agricultural metaphors in all of today’s readings give richness to the message that the word of God, cultivated in our hearts, bears much fruit in our lives. Creation itself awaits the redemption of all, even as our bodies await the resurrection. Just as we will rejoice in the fulfillment of God’s word, so will all of creation sing for joy in the Reign of God. The word of God is effective and holy; it brings about exactly what it says. It is not futile or empty, but rich in meaning for those who hear and are healed. Those who hear the word of God and keep it will, with all creation, bear much fruit and sing for joy. Copyright © J. TTrreeaassuurreess FFrroomm OOuurr TTrraaddiittiioonn:: Two centuries ago, Archbishop John Carroll worried that Americans would not appreciate the linguistic veil over our worship, and asked that the liturgy in the new United States be in English, not Latin. How did our liturgy come to be in Latin in the first place? In the first century, the dominant language in the regions where the church first flourished was Greek. Today in much of the world, almost everyone speaks at least a bit of English. Recently, the European Union even considered making English its official language, a curious proposal since only two English-speaking countries are members. Just as English is a unifying language today, it was hard to function in the ancient world without a smattering of Greek. Even the word “Eucharist” comes from the Greek for “thanksgiving.” For a long time, Greek was the language of worship, even in Rome. Slowly, society in the west shifted to a bias for Latin and against Greek. Latin first appeared in public prayer at the end of the second century, in the colonial outposts of North Africa. Soon, Latin became the language of culture, and so as fixed prayer forms were written, they were transmitted in Latin. From Rome and Africa, over the next four centuries, the new liturgical language of Latin spread north to Gaul and Britain.—Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
