Reflections ~ Reflexiones GGoossppeell:: MMaatttthheeww 44::11--1111

As Jesus prepares to begin his ministry, he enters a kind of spiritual "training camp." Alone in the desert, he fasts and prays for forty days. When the devil tries to ambush him with three temptations to disobey God's will, Jesus is well armed. He defends himself with the Word of God by quoting from the Book of Deuteronomy. He refuses to be tricked by false promises of power and glory. 1.) Lent can be a spiritual training camp for us today. It is a time to practice using God's Word as our defensive weapon against temptation. What spiritual training plans will you put into practice during Lent? Prayer and fasting are traditional. Today's passage from the Gospel might suggest that we spend a few minutes each day in reading Scripture

Those who tempt us to do evil often smile sweetly and have excellent social skills. Satan talked very persuasively to Adam and Eve and they fell for his wiles. That same smooth talker tried his tricks on Jesus but finally left, unable to turn Jesus' heart away from God. All of us face versions of each temptation faced by Jesus. The Evil One gets a real foothold not when we break rules but when we develop sinful habits. Words shouted once in anger and regretted are less damaging than a habit of belittling people. Breaking one's marriage vow and repenting is not like a pattern of cheating over years. Lent is as annual season of spiritual "spring cleaning." Has it been a while since you went to confession? Consider it now. If you go to the sacrament and confess the same sins over and over, ask yourself why. God forgives not just once, but for always. Copyright (c) 2010, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

LLiivviinngg SStteewwaarrddsshhiipp NNooww A prayer for Lent: "O Lord, who has mercy upon all, take away from me my sins, and mercifully kindle in me the fire of thy Holy Spirit. Take away from me the heart of stone, and give me a heart of flesh, a heart to love and adore Thee, a heart to delight in Thee, to follow and enjoy Thee, for Christ's sake. Amen." --Saint Ambrose of Milan (339-397)

¿Hace tiempo que no has ido a confesarte? Considera hacerlo ahora.

The Lenten season is a fresh invitation to explore again who God is, who we are, and what it means to be human. We begin by hearing the tragic story of the first humans in the book of Genesis. As Paul describes in Romans, our struggles started when our ancestors broke the bond of unity with God, sought self-sufficiency, and grew apart from their true purpose and identity. In Matthew’s Gospel, we see how Jesus resists the lure of living outside of unity with God. Jesus rejects false promises of possessions, power, and status. Instead, he puts his life in his Father’s hands. As our model for living as a fully human person, Jesus demonstrates that we are created to live in relationship with and trust in God, and in harmony with and for all of creation. Copyright © J. S. The program consists of a weekend experience followed by a series of post weekend sessions. Epiphany wants to make our parishioners and visitors aware of this family saving program. The program focuses on teaching communication skills between a husband and wife. Couples are guided through the weekend by three presenting couples and a Catholic priest. The program is open to those of all faith traditions as well as those with no faith beliefs.
