Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of Riordan,

Though I love all things Riordan, fishing is a close second. It helps me clear my mind and think about serious things, and not-so-serious things, too. The lessons I have learned on a fishing boat certainly have value on land.

Last year when I became President of Archbishop Riordan High School, I knew that we were embarking on an incredible journey. At times I knew this journey would be stormy, but confident that our vessel would continue to move forward steadied by the guiding

principles of Marianist education and support from this community.

As a Marianist school, we are committed to educating for adaptation and change and charting new courses. At the beginning of the school year we welcomed 30 new faculty and staff members. Other pillars of the Riordan community stepped in to fill new roles, including our principal, Vittorio Anastasio ‘84.

In the fall, Archbishop Riordan was recognized by the San Francisco Business Times for having the largest enrollment increase of any San Francisco high school for 2012-2013, a nod to the great work of our Admissions team and every student, parent, staff member and alumnus who is an ambassador of our school.

I was particularly proud to witness school history last May when the Class of 2013 became the first alumni class to achieve a 100% giving rate. Their collective contribution of $450 became the basis for the Jacob Valdiviezo ‘11 Endowed Scholarship. I invite other classes to similarly rise to the challenge. It is only with the support of alumni and friends that we will continue to navigate a successful future.

As we all know, faith is a process. In the book of John, Jesus calls on his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias to keep fishing after a night without a single catch. “ ‘Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.’ So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish” (John 21: 6). While we can’t always expect calm waters, if we have faith in God and in one another, we can certainly believe what is possible in the next net.

Sincerely,

Joseph M. ContiPresident

“DID You Do eVeRYthInG You PossIBLY CouLD?”marc rovetti ’87, director of alumni relations, in conversation With mike donohoe ‘63, riordan’s first graduate to play in the nfl

Archbishop Riordan High School has always held a strong place in my psyche and I feel honored to be back at my alma mater as the new Director of Alumni Relations. I have already had the privilege of meeting so many alumni during my short time here. One of my first endeavors was working on a video to promote our field project. We brought back a number of alumni to talk about their experiences at Riordan and what it means to be a Crusader athlete. You can hear their perspectives at www.riordanhs.org/fieldproject.

Michael Pierce Donohoe ’63 was one such individual who graciously participated. Donohoe and I met at the Balboa BART station and made our way down Phelan Avenue. This was the first time he had been back to campus while school was in session, after living in Chicago for the past 25 years, and more recently in Alameda. Soft-spoken and charismatic, Donohoe came to his 50th reunion last April, noting fondly, “We all thought we were the youngest guy there.”

Like any good Crusader, Donohoe came prepared. He had obviously thought through his time at Riordan, and answered each question eloquently. He is also humble; during the interview he was surprised to learn that he was the first alumnus to play in the National Football League.

Donohoe spoke fondly about his experience at Riordan and the fundamental things he learned that would take him to the NFL where he played seven seasons for two teams, the Atlanta Falcons and the Green Bay Packers. He also played one season for the World Football League. Listening to Donohoe, I was struck by the fact that he did not feel that athletics defined him. Instead, he took a strong stance on balancing academics and sports. “I’m not sure if I learned the life lessons on the field, or in the classroom, or both,” Donohoe said. “You had to learn how to manage your time.”

While football was his first passion, Donohoe also tried out

for, but didn’t make, the freshman baseball team. Not to be dissuaded from a spring sport, Donohoe turned instead to track where he eventually was voted “Best Track Man” his senior year. His Crusader fortitude seems to be a common theme, when he notes that none of the football teams on which he played while at Riordan were hugely successful. “We were an average team. I think I caught five passes one season,” he said. They finished 5-3-1 his senior year. His advice to current students, “Try it and see how it goes, don’t give up because others tell you that you won’t make it.”

Donohoe noted that while the mats provided today for the track team are a bit more robust, he is amazed that the field hasn’t changed much since his time here in the 1960s. He pointed out, “I actually can’t picture the school without the field, but you need to have a field that represents the excellence of Riordan.” That excellence is what he feels propelled him on his course in life.

Donohoe was admitted to the University of San Francisco

in 1963. He made a point of explaining to me that his admittance to USF was not by athletic scholarship but rather his merits in the classroom. “There was a mentality that academics were more important than sports, and that athletes must do as well in the classroom as they do on the field,” he said.

At the age of 18, Donohoe was 6’2” and weighed in at 175 pounds. During a pick-up game of football with some friends following graduation from Riordan he tweaked his knee so badly that he was unable to play football his freshman and sophomore years at USF. However, by the end of his sophomore year, Donohoe had sprouted to 6’4” and weighed 225 pounds. During another pick-up game, this one in basketball, a football coach noted his athleticism and asked him to try out for the team. Donohoe pointed out to the coach that he had a bad knee, but the coach convinced him to give it a try. He made the team and played tight end at USF for three seasons (’65, ’66, and ‘67). Donohoe still holds the USF record for the most receiving yards (225) in a game against Chico State in 1967 where he clearly caught the attention of the NFL.

In 1968, Donohoe was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings, the 225th overall pick in the 9th round, and was traded to the Falcons where he began his career. “There were no agents in those days,” he said. “What they presented looked good to me, and off I went to Atlanta.”

Following his career in the NFL he worked for Jim Beam distilleries, eventually becoming the CEO of Future Brands, a joint venture between Jim Beam and ABSOLUT. He was inducted into the Riordan Hall of Fame in 1977, and into the USF Hall of Fame in 1988.

Donohoe stated emphatically that his time at Riordan

shaped him into the man he is today and had this advice for Crusader athletes: “You always want to win, that is the competitiveness in us. However, what I learned at Riordan is that you are not always going to win, and that it is better to play as hard as you possibly can, and remember your values as a person. At the end of the game, if you won, more power to you, and if you didn’t, ask yourself: did you do everything you possibly could? “

From one Crusader to another, working hard and doing your best will take you far in life. Donohoe closed by saying, “I was always proud to be part of this group of young men.”

School News

September 2, 2013 was a warm day, with the sort of blue skies and thin white clouds one might picture if asked to imagine a perfect Labor Day. As the sun was setting, crowds gathered outside Archbishop Riordan High School’s Lindland Theatre for Lucky 13: A Labor of Love Alumni Revival. A half-hour before the curtains rose, the atmosphere was already electric.

Current students and their parents worked the box office, greeting the arriving crowd of alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends of the school. A group of retired Marianists, many of whom are alumni and former faculty themselves, pulled up in a limousine. Boys and girls piled into a photobooth that had been erected in the Phelan Avenue breezeway. Old friends shook hands and slapped each other on the back.

Though the show was just about to begin, the story started long ago.

“When the Riordan theatre opened in 1950, it put the school on the map,” notes Bro. Bill Bolts, SM ‘53. He recalls selling tickets and producing posters for those early productions. “The plays and original musicals between 1951 and 1956 filled the theatre every night. The common refrain was ‘How could high school students put on such great performances?’ ”

Early shows had gigantic casts and crew of up to 250 students, drawing as many as 6,000 people. “When I look at old photos and yearbooks, it’s plain to see that Riordan Drama was the main attraction for a lot of people,” says Valerie O’Riordan, current Drama Director and the creative force behind Lucky 13. “It was the thing to do. It was the place to be.”

That Riordan Drama began so explosively is thanks in large part to the school’s first drama director, Mr. James Lindland. Lindland directed 12 plays and wrote a handful of others during his eight-year tenure.

What started back then lasts to this day.

As the theatre lights dimmed on Labor Day, the assembled crowd found their seats and their conversations

lowered to an expectant buzz.Lindland Theatre’s massive red curtains opened,

and the audience was welcomed via video by Tom Sweeney ‘76, doorman of the Sir Francis Drake Hotel, who has welcomed guests from around the world for 35 years. The lights rose on a stage strewn with disused props and cast-aside plywood. At the command of Justin Wallis ‘14, Riordan Drama Club President, a group of stage crew members, past and present, flocked onstage. The Jefferson Starship classic “We Built This City” piped over the speakers, and the team went to work. In a fine-tuned and synchronized display of hammering and drilling, they turned scraps, props and backdrops from past Riordan Drama productions around the stage into something wholly original. What had seemed spontaneous was actu-ally well-designed and planned by John Quituqua ‘08.

With a proper set in place, the show was truly ready to begin.

The emcees of the evening, Joe Spano ‘63 and Cammy Blackstone, mother of Louis Novicki ’16, took the stage.

Remarking on his own brief experience with Riordan Drama, Spano, whose long career in film and television includes Hill Street Blue and NCIS, says he wished he had tried out for more roles than the one or two he did. When he first auditioned for Riordan’s second Drama Director, Mr. Ken Barbieri ‘54, Barbieri said to him, “Where have you been the last four years?”

That question made quite an impact on Spano. It dawned on him that perhaps he had really found a home for himself in acting.

“The well-rounded education that working in drama gives you, there’s no replacement for that,” says O’Riordan. “Working in theatre gives you the life lessons of working with other people and stepping into their shoes.” Denis Fama ‘64, a performer during his time at the school, returned to the stage for Lucky 13 to dance along-side his brother Joe ‘60 and other alumni. “My experience in Riordan Drama created a sense of family among cast and

crew, and we all felt that we were on an adventure togeth-er,” Fama said. “I remember feeling a real sense of loss when it was over.” For every generation of students to come through the doors of Lindland Theatre, the experience has been much the same. O’Riordan explains, “Where a student in some places and situations might feel like they have to rein in who they are, change who they are, in theatre we are asking them to go beyond their own skin.”

Lindland Theatre is a work of art itself. The space is named for the school’s first drama director, and can seat 1,147. Like the rest of the school’s facilities, it was built to stand the test of time. “The venue is what continually sustains the program,” says O’Riordan. “We have an amazing, amazing facility here.” Proceeds from the raffle and silent auction at Lucky 13 will benefit updates to old technology around the theatre, such as sound equipment and lighting. Lindland Theatre may withstand the march of time, but the technol-ogy must change to keep pace. When the sound of “There’s No Business Like Show Business” filled the theatre, dancers filed onto stage and gave the audience a visual representation of the legacy of Riordan Drama. Alumni from 1960 to 2013 and current students began to can-can, shuffle-ball-change, and wave their best jazz hands. As the evening proceeded, it also became clear how many people of varied talents had come across that stage over the years. Chris Dwyer ‘91 and his wife Angela entertained with their piano and voice duet of jazz standards. Tom Osborne ‘05 performed a troops-rousing monologue from Richard III, while Dan O’Connor ‘91 along two other impro-visational professionals from Los Angeles Impro Theatre extemporaneously created an eight-minute play in the style of Shakespeare, which left the audience in stitches.

The evening rolled on, bringing with it a spirited medley from Phantom of the Opera, courtesy of David ‘91 and Katharine Greenbaum, a must-be-seen-to-believe magic show from Greg Chin ‘00, and two songs from the repertory of Ricky Ricardo, performed by Bill Mendieta ‘86. Mendieta is currently touring the nation, playing Ricardo in I Love Lucy: Live on Stage.

Principal Vittorio Anastasio ‘84 joined the fun by sharing a few jokes at the mic before launching into “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.” In a nod to Vaudeville acts, a hooked cane soon appeared from offstage and pulled Anastasio off. Other faculty and staff performers included Joey Klobas ‘07 and Stephanie Lundin, who appeared as an old couple reminiscing and singing about the old days. Before the Alumni dancers got onstage for the last time, one final alumnus displayed his tremendous talent. Ron Rosa ‘60, who has worked at Riordan as math teacher, coach, bus driver, and Prep Shop manager, came onstage with his dance partner Lynn Gardiner to perform what was billed as “The Last Dance.” Rosa and Gardiner began their routine coy and shy, with Rosa playing the reluctant boy at a school dance. They moved slowly through the classic ballroom steps before breaking into a full-fledged disco routine, complete with a soundtrack from the Bee Gees. They had the crowd on their feet, hooting and hollering.

When the curtain finally lowered, graduates from seven decades had shared the stage. They were brought together by something that had played a significant role in their lives. The theatre still stands as a monument to the workmanship that went into constructing Archbishop Riordan High School. The legacy of the drama program has proven just as strong and long-lasting. Denis Fama remarked that, “Just as I had a sense of loss when I left Riordan Drama, I had the same feeling after a week of rehearsing for Lucky 13.”

One of the most touching moments of the evening was the Guardian Angel Tribute, a slideshow set to music commemorating many deceased alumni, staff and friends of Riordan. The legacy of Riordan Drama will continue to grow under the care of O’Riordan, who has led the program for 13 years now, through varied productions such as One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Romeo & Juliet, and Jesus Christ Superstar. Supporting her, like they have supported every drama director over the past 60-plus years, are the other directors who design, choreograph, and assist in putting on the productions, and the steady stream of young Crusaders who are looking for a place to find themselves.

The Stanfel Cup has always been marked by great friend-ships and friendly rivalries, and this year’s contest between Archbishop Riordan High School and Sacred Heart Cathedral (SHC) proved to be no exception.

The Stanfel Cup is named for Nicholas Stanfel ’83, who played football at Riordan and later at the College of San Mateo and Cal Lutheran University. Stanfel returned to coach at Riordan after graduating from Cal Lutheran, and during this time he was diagnosed with brain cancer. The cancer went into remission, and he later coached at SHC with John Lee, Riordan’s current Varsity Head Coach and also a close friend.

Unfortunately Stanfel lost his battle with cancer in 1992, and a group of friends, coaches and alumni from Riordan and SHC got together to talk about how to honor Nick, an individual who played hard and showed incredible resil-iency when faced with difficult circumstances. This group included Frank Oross ‘69, former Riordan Head Varsity Football Coach and current faculty member Liam Watters, Coach Lee and Phil Freed, current SHC Director of Athletics. SHC had recently joined the West Catholic Athletic League and was playing Riordan regularly, so the Stanfel Cup was born to be played each year between the two schools.

“Nick had such a great sense of humor and told it like it is,” said Oross. “The Stanfel Cup is about the spirit to never give up and to fight against all the odds.”

The Stanfel Cup also celebrates the many Riordan and SHCconnections in the City. “This is a chance to honor a great man in the context of two great San Francisco schools competing against each other,” said Principal Vittorio Anastasio ’84, also a friend of Stanfel.

This year’s thrilling game was the first Stanfel Cup win under Lee’s leadership, and Riordan’s first Cup win in the past five years. Overall Riordan has won 12 times and SHC ten.

There is another part of this year’s game that truly reflects the Marianist family spirit that permeates Riordan. Stanfel’s mother, Ann Hirsch, attends the game each year with Nick’s sisters Rose and Angela. This year Nick’s former fiancé Danan sat beside them as well. At the time that Nick passed away, he and Danan were engaged to be married. Now living in Florida, Danan also brought her family, including son Sam who is currently battling brain cancer. Sam took part in the opening ceremony and coin toss with the team. In an unexpected and poignant moment, Oross grabbed a jersey to give Sam as a gift and randomly selected 63, Stanfel’s former jersey number.

“I try and honor Nick every way I can, but this year’s win was extra special at home, on our Riordan field, and with his family there,” said Lee. “Nick is smiling down on us. He would have loved this.”

The Nick Stanfel Memorial Scholarship supports students attending Riordan. For more information, please contact Mr. Marc Rovetti ’87, [email protected] or (415)586-8200 ext. 357.

network globally, lead locallyhenry Bonilla ’15 spent his summer developing skills he will use for the rest of his life. Bonilla was nominated by Archbishop Riordan High School faculty to attend the State Leadership Seminar (LS) in Sacramento, and along with fellow Crusader Jason Conci ‘15 and 100 students from all over California, spent four days with one focus—building future leaders. Through a host of group activities, attendees learned how to interact with others while getting an opinion across; how to be a role model for others; and how to encourage a group to think about long-term goals. Based on Bonilla’s success at the LS, a conference sponsored by the Hugh O’Brien Leadership (HOBY) organization, he and three other students were selected to attend the World Leadership Congress held at Loyola University in Chicago later in the summer.

HOBY emphasizes leadership from four perspectives: Personal Leadership, Group Leadership, Societal Leadership, and Global Leadership. At the week-long Congress in Chicago, Bonilla and more than 400 students from around the world attended panels by business, non-profit, educa-tion and social media leaders, including CNN journalist Josh Levs, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, and many others. When asked about the most important thing he learned, he stated, “It is better to listen than hear; listening to other people may influence your perspective on a situation.”

Back at Riordan, Bonilla said, is where his work will really begin, emphasizing service as a way to support the com-

munity. He has already jumped in, becoming more involved with the CORE service team and helping to organize the school’s fall blood drive. With a summer of personal develop-ment under his belt, no doubt there will be more opportunities for him to lead for the greater good.

leading at the next leveladvocate locally, serve passionatelyFor Joshua Cardenas ’15, a desire to make a difference in the lives of youth turned up the volume on a call to public service. Cardenas is one of 17 members of the San Francisco Youth Commission representing more than 200,000 young people in San Francisco.

Early in his high school career, Cardenas was drawn to the work of the Youth Commission; he applied his sophomore year but was not accepted. Encouraged by Youth Com-mission staff to try again, he was appointed in August 2013 by Supervisor John Avalos. Cardenas was also selected by fellow commissioners to serve on the Executive Com-mittee as the Legislative Affairs Officer. He is the point person for receiving, monitoring and reporting pending legislation from the Board of Supervisors to the Commission for comment and recommendation.

To be the voice for the voiceless is a theme for Cardenas’s leadership. He currently serves on the Youth Justice sub-committee to learn more about the needs of youth of incarcerated parents, and how to ensure full recreational access for youth detainees. Youth immigration and employ-ment, and opportunities for low-income and communities of color, round out his priorities.

As Cardenas learns the nuts and bolts of public service and advocacy, including writing legislative memos, engaging constituents, and working with public officials, he hasn’t lost sight of the value of this tremendous experience. “You have to put in your time and understand the issues from multiple perspectives,” he said. “You have to practice making good, informed decisions.”

When asked if he aspires to a higher office, Cardenas acknowledged that it is a possibility, but for now, “I like be-ing empowered to make decisions on behalf of today and tomorrow’s youth in our great city.”

The results also placed Riordan in San Francisco wrestling history with the highest place ever by a city team. Of the seven State Placers ever from San Francisco, five are Riordan graduates. Individual wrestlers also took home a host of accolades. Zac Contreras ‘13 (pictured above) became the school’s first-ever three-time CCS Champion and pinned every wrestler in the tournament this year. Other school records he holds includes most wins (10) at the State Championships, and most appearances (three) at the State Championships for a Riordan wrestler (tied with Adam Cohen ‘81). inaugural club rugby season filled with honors, novice players Taking home league honors is rare for a first-year team. But the Riordan club rugby team did just that, ending the season with an 8-4 overall record and being voted the most outstanding first-year team in the Northern California Youth Rugby Association’s Bay Area Conference for the Silver Junior Varsity division. In the first-ever meeting of two WCAL-member teams, Riordan beat Bellarmine 26-22.

“This group worked incredibly hard, improved daily, and dreamed big,” said Coach Tony Wells, noting that the major-ity of players came to the team with no previous rugby

experience. Wells played semi-professionally in his native New Zealand before coming to the U.S. and joining the San Francisco Golden Gate Rugby Club (SFGGR) based on Treasure Island. Assisting Wells was Wylie Ilalio, also a Riordan football coach.

While currently a club sport, Wells hopes the WCAL will officially adopt rubgy in the next few years, with other schools possibly fielding teams. “I look at rugby as a skill for life, teaching discipline and strategy,” said Wells. “Many of the SFGGR players have gone on to play at colleges with stellar rugby programs, including UC Berkeley. The sport is gaining popularity.”

According to the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association, rugby is the fastest growing sport in the U.S. among high school students. In 2010 USA Rugby created a new college department to promote play at that level, and rugby will make its Olympic debut at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro after a 91-year absence.

As the rugby team enters the 2014 season, no doubt they will be looking at where the sport can take them, and having fun along the way.

What is the role of an athletic department?I believe the Athletic Department serves both the stu-dent and the school. For the student, athletics is a way to showcase talent, build friendships, test physical abilities, and learn life lessons while competing. An athlete learns how to accomplish a goal both individually and in a group, how to get back up after being knocked down, and how to overcome an obstacle that seemed so big. An important part of our boys’ development is to learn how to do these things through athletics.

Athletics is also another way we express who we are as a school. Our boys are competitive and organized, and I know our opponents walk away from our games thinking that Riordan is an amazing place. We have an exceptional group of friendly and professional parent volunteers helping run our games, and fantastic fans.

What is your vision for riordan athletics? One of the first projects that I worked on was to reorganize some of the gym closets and storage areas. There I found year after year of WCAL and CCS championship trophies for almost every sport. It was obvious to me that Riordan was a school with a winning tradition.

I see our Athletic Department setting a new standard for the WCAL and all schools across the country. We are creating new ways for fans to experience our games and interact with our Athletic Department. Our new athletics website is set to launch soon, and media guides (programs) are now available on your smart phone or iPad when you enter each home contest. On top of that, I envision an Athletic Department that produces student-athletes that graduate from Riordan making their college choice between the athletic scholarship and academic scholar-ship they have been offered.

What are you most looking forward to this year?I think people expect me to say our basketball and wrestling teams making a run at the state championship, or the big rivalry games in football and baseball. For me, there is nothing more that I look forward to than watch-ing our coaches coach and our athletes practice. I spend a lot of my time in my office, in meetings and taking care of departmental business, but I relish the time I get see our teams in action. I love when our basketball players are in open gym and our wrestlers are in the weight room. I love watching the cross country team run on the track while the football players are on the field.

I’ve been involved with athletics for a long time and at various levels. I know the winning will come, the champi-onships will be there, the awards will pour in all under one condition—we get better every single day.

describe the role of a coach. To me, the role of the coach is to put your players in the position to be successful every single day. What I think we often forget is that a season is a process. Both players and coaches are challenged and put in learning situations throughout the year so that they improve and have the chance to advance to the championship. Players learn their weaknesses and how to get better. Coaches are figuring out rotations and who plays well in different game situations.

It would be great if we could schedule the easiest oppo-nents and beat them every game. We’d all walk away feeling like we were great and pat each other on the back. But what would we have learned from that? How much better would we be at the end of the year? I’d contend that we’d actually be worse. Our coaches’ role is to challenge our players, teach them to overcome adversity, and celebrate the real success of improved skills and teamwork.

We started out like any freshman class at Riordan:

congesting the lunch lines to the irritation of the

upperclassmen and singing along to “Coach

O’s Corner.”

The unique sense of brotherhood here is what

separates Riordan from other high schools. It is

through this supportive, accepting network that we can confidently express who we

are. And, because of our brotherhood, because of the people sitting behind me, I am

able to stand here in front of you today.

Just like building friendships, learning to enjoy the present, rather than the mistakes of

the past or the apprehensions of the future, takes a lifetime, but it makes every moment

of life worthwhile. Although we have stumbled and thought about giving up many

times over, each one of us has pushed a brother onward.

And so, to my fellow graduates: we have come full circle to a new first day, but this

time as Crusaders for the rest of our lives. This school has gifted us with an excellent

education, and a lot of love from the teachers. Today begins a new struggle: to

share the gifts of the Riordan brotherhood. I love all of you just as who you are, and

congratulations to the Class of 2013!

PAtRICK W. DALY

a message from the director of development

Dear Riordan Community,

Seeing a student population that truly represents the world’s diversity is a gift at Archbishop Riordan High School that we cannot take for granted. Shepherding this gift wisely is our mission, and we strive to prepare our young men to become outstanding leaders in their own right. Under the leadership of Mr. Joseph Conti, my responsibility as the Director of Development is to raise the necessary funds to provide financial assistance to qualified families so we can continue to provide an affordable, quality education in the Marianist tradition to all young men who seek it.

Each day, the devoted Archbishop Riordan faculty, staff, and administration are meeting the challenges of a 21st century education on Phelan Avenue. Here’s an example of this type of leadership. Two years ago when discerning how to better prepare our young men for their future, including the ever competitive employment and college markets, Riordan adopted a technology-driven curriculum with the 1:1 iPad program. Under the leadership of our Academic Technology Department, the school evaluated the educational and practical needs of students and faculty, and how our campus infrastructure would physically support more than 900 wireless devices. With input from internal audiences and outside consultants, they created a plan to transition the school to the use of iPads in the classroom and install a state-of-the-art wireless system to support this new program. Technology is an ongoing area of focus for faculty professional development, and for students we are building an ethics in technology curriculum so they leave Riordan with a better understanding of how to positively use technology.

Where do these accomplishments leave us today? In 2011 the school completed a 20-year masterplan to address the aging facilities of Riordan. Part of those plans called for the renovation of our campus, including the modernization of our classrooms, music center and athletic facilities. Following through on this $61 million dollar masterplan is necessary to carry Riordan into the next 100 years of all male Marianist education. Your support of the $1.8 million dollars of financial aid awarded is just one area of need. We are also in the silent phase of the $2.2 million dollar Field Project. This project kicks off the renovations that will enhance the educational experience of our current and future students, while bringing Riordan onto a level playing field with our competition.

Many other Catholic schools in the Bay Area have invested tens of millions of dollars, funds from alumni, foundations and other sources, to transform and modernize their campuses. now it is riordan’s turn. We look forward to your support of the annual pledge, and we ask that you keep the staff and young men of Riordan in your thoughts and prayers.

2013 chaminade award recipient John f. mccloskey ‘55On Friday, January 18, the Archbishop High School community honored Captain John F. “Jack” McCloskey ‘55 (SFFD retired) with the 2013 Chaminade Award for his decades of service to Riordan as a dedicated alumnus, par-ent, founding board member, benefactor and friend. Jack’s entire family was in attendance, including sons and Riordan alumni John ‘80 and Joe ‘81, as well as San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White, who gave a spirited tribute to her Fire Department trainer. Bishop William J. Justice celebrated the Mass, with co-celebrants Fr. Mike Quinn ‘70 and Fr. Thomas Seagrave ‘60. As a special tribute to Jack, the ARHS marching band learned the Marines’ Hymn in his honor.

class of 1976 launches endowed scholarship campaignLong-time friends Kevin herman ’76 and steve Roche ‘76 play a lot of golf, and the conversation always drifts back to their time on Phelan Avenue. “With my son Nicolas now a junior at Riordan, I realize it is more important than ever to give back to the alma mater,” said Roche. Both concluded that one of the most significant ways to support the school is through scholarships for future Crusaders. The Class of 1976 started a class scholarship a few years ago under the leadership of Bill nowlin ’76 and Paul De Martini ’76. Roche and Herman are now call-ing on their classmates to take this to the next level and create an endowed scholarship that will live in perpetuity for the life of the school. This will be the school’s 7th endowed class scholarship that supports many deserving students seeking a college prep, Marianist education. “If you want to make a gift that will have an impact year after year, endow a scholarship,” said Director of Development Patrick Daly. “The cost of Catholic edu-

cation increases three to five percent each year, and your gift to financial aid meets our biggest need.” In the Crusader spirit, Roche and Herman are encouraging their ’76 classmates to support the endowment. “Contributions of any size are welcome, and they are all greatly appreciated to help us reach our goal,” said Herman.

In the spirit of competition, the Class of 1976 challenges other classes to do the same. If you are interested in supporting the Class of 1976 endowment, or if you would like more information about how to start an endowment for your class, please contact Mr. Marc Rovetti ‘87, (415)586-8200 ext. 357 or [email protected].

A scholarship can be endowed for $25,000. Monthly, quarterly or other payment plans can be set up to suit your needs.

Class of 1963 Golden Diploma

Cheers to the Class of 1963, who celebrated 50 years since graduating from Archbishop Riordan High School on April 26-27. More than 40 members of the Class and their families celebrated with a Mass and reception at Riordan, followed by a dinner at the Fairmont Hotel.

The Class of 1963 represents a diverse group of attorneys, judges, civil service workers, police officers, fireman, clergy, physicians, busi-nessman, electricians, teachers, actors, elected officials, social workers, professional athletes, college professors and artists. In the spirit of brotherhood, Dr. Tim Norman, former class president, gave this advice to current students: “Regardless of our individual and collective accomplishments, when the Class of ‘63 looks back we realize and appreciate the influence Riordan had in our lives and how fortunate we were to have gone to this school.”

Class of 1973 Celebrates 40 years

The dedication of their yearbook read “There is a future for a man of PEACE.” Fast forward 40 years and that spirit was alive and well at a celebration for the Class of 1973. Many friends enjoyed a Friday night Giants game, followed by a “Hawaiian shirt casual” dinner at the Elks Club in San Francisco the next night. CRossInG the FInIsh LInesteve mayer ‘72 on running an ironman and a business

Class Notes

In November 2012, I left Burr Pilger Mayer, a firm that I co-founded and ran for 25 years, and started a new accounting and wealth management firm called SD Mayer & Associates. On that same day, I decided to do an Ironman. Ten years ago when I turned 50, I did a half Ironman as a midlife adventure; as I looked at 59 slipping away and the challenges of starting a new company, finishing an Ironman seemed like a worthy goal.

On July 27, 2013, I crossed the finish line at 9:59:56 pm after swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles and running 26.2 miles. My family was there to cheer me on, and I am sure their thoughts ranged from being very proud to “I hope he doesn’t do this again.” I could barely stand and the bottoms of my feet were covered with blisters. However, when the race official handed me a medal and said, “You are an Ironman,” the pain went away and was replaced with a sense of accomplishment that I will never forget.

Over the next few days as my body returned to normal, I started to think about the similarities of running a success-ful accounting firm and completing an Ironman. Just as there is a great feeling of crossing the finish line, in business there is a similar feeling knowing that you made a significant contribution to help clients achieve their goals. Here are my thoughts on how these two worlds collide:

1. You need a plan. Don’t fool yourself. Competing in an Ironman takes a big commitment. Figuring out the logistics of training and the balance between your normal life—family, work, recreation and friends—are all obstacles to overcome. Running a business also takes comprehensive planning. If you don’t know where you are going, how will you know when you get there?

2. The Right Equipment. An Ironman requires the right equipment: a bike, wetsuit, helmet, goggles,

biking shoes, running shoes and a variety of clothing. A successful accounting firm needs the right tools such as a technology infrastructure that links the firm, employees and clients in an efficient manner. It also needs materials to tell their story.

3. Training. To finish an Ironman takes months of continuous training. Most weeks it is a minimum commitment of 15 to 20 hours. The quality of any

Mayer during the bike leg of the Vineman Ironman in Napa, California.

The following is an adaptation of an article Mayer wrote for Accounting today. To read the full article, go to sdmayer.com.

Page 61: magazine · 2021. 1. 16. · 4 ARCHBISHOP RIORDAN HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI MAGAZINE - FUTURE FutuRe M agazine Archbishop Riordan High School 175 Phelan Avenue San Francisco, CA 94112 (415)586-8200

business is very much proportional to the quality of its staff, and the firms that achieve greatness are those that combine professional development into a well-coordinated long-term plan for employees.

4. Research and Knowledge. Ironman races have been around for over 25 years. As a result there are plenty of veterans that are happy to share their experience and offer advice. There is also an endless amount of information on training, nutrition, equipment, and medical issues. Knowledge about the race and the ability to research training questions and techniques is critical to preparing oneself for the race. In the same manner, a well-run business must teach its people to research critical issues and add specific, unique client experiences to their knowledge database. 5. Support. No one ever finishes an Ironman without the support of their family, friends and colleagues. An accounting firm needs the same type of support. Over the course of a year and certainly over many years, it is a roller coaster of highs and lows. Between attracting clients, serving clients, hiring the right people, changing regulations, the long hours and the constant deadlines, it is a tough but rewarding career.

6. One Bite at a Time. When the gun went off and I started the swim, my mind broke the swim into about 10 sections: to the bridge, to the white buoy, to the next bridge and so on. When I started the bike ride, I did the same thing. When I reached the last running transition point at about 22 miles, I thought “In an hour, I will be an Ironman!” It is amazing how, if you break down any assignment into small pieces, each minor step brings a sense of accomplishment.

7. Finishing. Running through the tape at the finish line and hearing a race official say, “Congrat-ulations, you are an Ironman” is quite a feeling. In the same manner, getting a new client when you have worked hard to gain their business, or hiring a key employee is a victory. Finishing is a great feeling and the more often you share it within your firm, the more successful you will become. Winning is contagious.

8. Engage Competitors. For the vast major-ity of people who complete an Ironman, your fellow athletes are colleagues who constantly offer encouragement and support. My number in the race was 639. I must have heard “great job 639” or something like that 500 times during the race. I have always encouraged my employees to become friends rather than competitors with other CPAs in their com-munity. Everyone needs help. Everyone is not an expert in all matters. Building a strong base with other firms shows respect for others and that we are all in this together.

9. Continual Improvement. During my train-ing I took 30 minutes off of my swim time, improved my average bike speed by over three miles an hour, and strengthened the muscles in my knees from not being able to run 100 yards without incredible pain to being able to

go for 26 miles with no pain. None of this hap-pened overnight. It took many months of training and conditioning. Unless you are committed to a philosophy of continuous improvement, com-placency will settle in at any firm. Employees and clients will notice and slowly, but surely, your competition will pass you by.

When I finished the Ironman I was totally exhausted. I told myself, “Steve, you can cross that off the bucket list.” Well in a few days, the pain was gone and my mind started to wander, “maybe I will do a half Ironman or just a marathon.” All of the great professionals I know go through this cycle often, but they almost always come back for the next challenge.

Jacob Valdiviezo ‘11On March 30, the Riordan community lost Jacob Valdiviezo, a loved and respected Crusader alumnus, classmate, teammate, friend and brother.

After graduating from Riordan with honors, Jacob attended Lewis & Clark College in Oregon where he excelled as a wide receiver on the football team. In a letter, Barry Glassner, President of Lewis & Clark College, noted Jacob’s “ever-present smile and infectious enthusiasm endeared him to all who knew him.” The letter also described how Jacob befriended Patrick, a young man with special needs, who serves as unofficial trainer for L&C’s football and basketball teams. Jacob made CDs for Patrick and served as Patrick’s “go-to” whenever Patrick needed help or support. He lived his life embracing others.

Jacob is the son of Carlos and Margarita Valdiviezo, and brother of Carlos ’07.

In his honor, Archbishop Riordan created the Jacob Valdiviezo Memorial Scholarship. In honor of their fallen brother, 100% of the Class of 2013 made a contribution to the Valdiviezo Scholarship during their final weeks as Riordan students last May. For more information on how you can support this scholarship, please contact Mr. Patrick Daly, [email protected] or (415)586-8200 ext. 264.

friends We have lost

A member of one of Riordan’s most enduring clans, Tim Holl passed away on May 18. All seven Holl brothers attended Riordan and jointly hold the record for the most graduates from any family. Tim was preceded in death by his brother Steve ’67 in 2012.

After graduating from the California Maritime Academy in 1983, Tim began a long

maritime career including years of tugboat experience and work on oil tankers. In 2005 he fulfilled a lifelong dream and became a licensed Bar Pilot, a job he enjoyed immensely. Tim had many cherished friends among his Bar Pilot colleagues.

The sea was central to Tim’s life through his profession and as an avid kayaker, surfer and fly fisherman. He felt equally at home in the mountains where he enjoyed backpacking and rock climbing.

Tim will be remembered always by his wife of 23 years Laura, sons Ian and Eric, mother Claire, his brothers and sisters-in-laws, and many nieces and nephews.

Tim Holl ‘77

For we know, if our earthly house of this habitation be dissolved, that we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in heaven.

II Corinthians 5:1 – 1

Ed Mahoney, a man devoted to helping generations of Crusaders to stay connected to Riordan and to each other, passed away on July 25.

After a long career with the Safeway organization, Ed returned to Riordan to assist the school with alumni and development projects. In this role he laid the groundwork for many events, most notably the Alumni/Senior Luncheon, now the Alumni/Senior Breakfast, held

each May to welcome new Riordan graduates into the ranks of Crusader alumni. In 1998 Ed received the Blessed William Joseph Chaminade Award, the school’s highest honor, in recognition of decades of service to the school. Most recently, Ed served as the Director of Development at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Daly City.

Ed will be deeply missed by his family, including wife Linda, children Josh, Dan and Thomas, his Crusader brothers, and the many friends he made while working on behalf of his beloved alma mater.

An enthusiastic and loyal Crusader, Monsignor John “Jack” O’Connor died peacefully at his home in Healdsburg on March 15 at the age of 78.

Always an active alumnus who faithfully gave back to his alma mater, Jack was recognized for his service to Riordan on several occasions. In 1982 he received the Drama Award for distinguished alumni who have

contributed to the advancement of Riordan’s theatre program, and also received the nod of Alumnus of the Year. In 1995 he was recognized with the Chaminade Award, and would go on to serve as Honorary Chair of Riordan’s first ever and very successful capital campaign. Jack enjoyed staying in touch with his ‘52 classmates and other Riordan friends, and in recent years he was a regular at the Downtown Luncheon. Jack was preceeded in death by his brother Philip, and is survived by his sister Peggy Vollert, and many nieces and nephews and their children. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and the Riordan community.

Julio Saria passed away peacefully on February 22 following a stroke he sustained the week prior. He was 74 years old.

Julio joined the Riordan Family in September of 2008. Day after day he was committed to making sure the Riordan campus was safe and beautifully maintained. This was particularly evident in the care he took to line the football field prior

to games, and by supporting the events staff during the many events and festivities that take place at Riordan. His friends and colleagues will always remember how Julio approached every job, be it small or large, with a positive attitude.
