Mission Statement

We, the Church of Saint Joseph, are a Catholic, Benedictine faith community. Through our

liturgy and faith formation, we build on a solid foundation as active witnesses of Christ,

and we eagerly respond to the needs of the Parish and the global community.

New Parishioners To register, stop by

the parish office or mail your completed

registration form found on the New

Parishioners page of the parish website.

Prayer Corner If you know someone in

need of prayers, please call the parish office

at ext. 100 and ask that their name be added

to the Prayer Corner of the bulletin. In

addition, you may call one of the chairpersons

of the Prayer Network: Mary at 363-4244 or

Joan at 363-4358.

Infant Baptism Attendance at a baptism

class is required for all baptisms, even for

parents who have had other children

baptized. Please call the parish office at

ext. 100 to register for the baptism class

(held the first Monday of each month at

6:00 pm). The date of baptism will be

scheduled upon completion of the class.

Marriage Please call the parish office at

ext. 100 to set a wedding date and to register

for a parish preliminary marriage session. A

minimum of six months is needed for

preparation.

Pastoral Care If any parishioner or family

member is in need of a pastoral care visit,

please call Fr. Jerome at ext. 122. Today’s

privacy laws do not permit hospitals to

contact churches when a patient is in need of

a pastoral visit. We are made aware of it only

when the individual or their friends and family

contact us.

Sacrament Of Anointing

Please call Fr. Jerome at ext. 122.

From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Friends in our Lord Jesus: It

looks like the year of construction

has begun. Thanks to Dale Sand,

the vesting sacristy has been

demolished and is ready for a face

lift. Rather than try to repair the

present heating pipes under the

floor, a new layer of concrete will

be poured with in-floor heating. Then we can create a new

vesting sacristy which will be much more open with a ramp

from the East Entrance of the church. The confessional will

be in that area as well as a new storage room and a uni-sex

restroom. The cleaning and re-wiring of the organ is taking

place this month. There should be no disturbance to our

worship schedule. On the 12

th

of this month, we will be

reporting to the Diocesan finance committee on our plan for

the church interior. Their approval is necessary before we

can move forward on the church renewal.

I want to share some very good news about miracles

happening to some of our members. Laura Kutzera and

Mary Botz have both received a clean bill of health after

their terrible ordeals with cancer. They have both declared

that without the prayers and support of family and spiritual

friends, they may not have been able to reach this point of

being cancer-free. God bless all who have prayed so

earnestly for these two valiant women! Unfortunately, our

task at prayers is not over as we still have too many people

that continue to struggle with cancer. They are certainly in

our prayers.

This Monday is Rosh Hashanah and marks the beginning of

the Jewish New Year with a two-day celebration. The

holiday is celebrated by sounding a shofar, eating traditional

foods such as apples and honey, challah, and tzimmes. If

you have any Jewish friends, it is appropriate to wish them

a happy new year. On Friday, we celebrate the feast of the

Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Mass is at 8 am and will be

followed by coffee and treats. Please come if you are able!

Fr. Jerome Tupa, OSB, Pastor

Catholic Campaign for Human Development

In your packet of envelopes, you

will find one dated September 16 for

the Catholic Campaign for Human

Development. Gifts to this campaign

help community organizations

change existing structures of poverty

and build an economy based on

justice and the dignity of the human

person. If you would like to

contribute, you may place your donation envelope in the

Sunday Offering basket right along with your regular

offering. You may also give electronically by going to our

Twenty-Third & Twenty-Fourth Sundays in Ordinary Time Page 3

Gospel Reflection

In the first reading and in the

Gospel, we hear God telling us

not to be afraid because he

comes to save us. Both readings

refer to the deaf and the mute and

God’s intervention in their lives.

In the Gospel, Jesus heals the

man who is deaf and mute. He

shows great respect for this man

because he does this healing in

private. He does not want him to

be a spectacle. The powerful words BE OPENED gives the

freedom for the man to speak and to hear. In what ways are

we deaf and mute? What are we unable to hear or to speak

about? Am I willing to hear the message of God’s love that

comes to me in my family, in the sermon on Sunday, or in

the words of a friend? Sometimes God uses events and

people in our lives to challenge us to listen to things we

may not like to hear! Each of these words and messages

can lead us closer to God. How do we use our gift of

speech? Do we use it to thank God for the many gifts we

have been given? Do we give words of affirmation and

encouragement to family and friends? This week, take time

to say a prayer of Thanks to God for the gifts of speech and

hearing.

The Gospel for the 24

th

Sunday

finds Jesus asking the question

of his followers, “Who do

people say that I am?” This is

a question that Jesus poses to

each of us. How can we

respond to that question? Who

is Jesus in your life? Some may say that he is friend, some

that he is savior and others that he is God. When Peter said

that he is the Christ, Jesus begins to tell his followers that

he will suffer and die for the people. We, too, must suffer

as followers of Jesus. That suffering can come in many

ways; it is different for each person. How do we accept this

suffering in our lives? Are we able to see it as part of our

life in Jesus? This week, take time to pray and answer the

question, “Who do you think Jesus is?”

Growing in Faith

Faith Formation for Grades 1–11

If you did not turn in your completed registration form by

the due date, please do so immediately to secure your

registration and so that we can be sure to have the

textbooks and resources ready for your child.

Faith Formation sessions will begin on Sunday,

September 23 for Liturgy of the Word for Children (during

the 10:00 am Mass) and for grades 1–10 beginning with

the 10:00 am Mass and ending at 12:30 pm. Parents of

grades 1–10 are asked to join this family catechesis

opportunity. After Mass we will begin with a family

activity. Once the children are dismissed for their

“textbook time,” a faith enrichment for parents will be

offered with both the children’s textbook time and the

parent enrichment time ending at 12:30 pm.

Added note: Faith Formation sessions for grade 11 (Track

III) begin on Sunday, October 28 at 6:00 pm. Details have

been sent to the candidates and parents. If you have not

received the mailing, please contact Marian at 363-7505,

ext. 152.

Gratitude to Loyola Press

A heartfelt thank you and recognition to Loyola Press for

sponsoring the meal for our faith formation team and their

families on September 9. Our gratitude to Kathy

Donnelly, the Loyola Press representative from Chicago,

for joining us for the day.

CSB/SJU Involvement Fair

Marian and Mary will be attending the CSB/SJU

Involvement Fair on behalf of our parish on Thursday,

September 6. Anyone interested in helping with the setup

and take-down and assisting in the parish booth, please

contact Marian. Setup will be at 4:00 pm and the fair will

begin at 5:00 pm.

Hats Off to the Catechetical Team

At once they left their nets and followed Jesus. (Matt 4:20)

As we celebrate National Catechetical Sunday, we say

“Hats off to the 2018–2019 catechetical team.” Many

wonderful and faith-filled people have responded to the

call of discipleship this year: faith formation team

catechists, catechist assistants and support persons.

We are truly grateful for their living witness of faith to

and for the children, youth and adults of our parish. This

year’s National Catechetical Theme set forth by the

United States Council of Catholic bishops is “Enlisting

Witnesses for Jesus Christ.” Thank you to the many

volunteers who share their faith as witnesses for Christ in

our parish faith formation. Please pray for the team and

their families.
