NEWS AND EVENTS

My dear friends at St. Elizabeth’s, We are now well into the month of May, which is often referred to as Mary’s month. During May we honor Mary, not for one day, but for the entire month! Although the Church has set aside the month of May to honor Mary, the Mother of God, for many centuries, the custom became widespread during the nineteenth century. May is also the month we celebrate Mother’s Day honoring our mothers, grandmothers, godmothers, and all those who have been mothers in our life. This seems appropriate because as I mentioned in my homily last week, Mary is also the mother for all of us and the model of motherhood for all mothers. During May, Mary is honored in many different ways. For some, it is the daily recitation of the Rosary. Others may have a special statue or picture as a reminder of Mary. Some parishes, such as ours, have had a long-standing tradition known as the May Crowning. The crown adorned in flowers is made to represent Mary’s beauty and as a reminder for us to imitate the Blessed Mother’s virtues of faith, hope, and self-sacrificing love. St. Pope John Paul II had a deep devotion and love for Mary. It was evident in his prayer life and his teachings. This past Sunday May 13th, was not only Mother’s Day, but coincidently, it was the one hundred and first anni-versary of the famous first apparition of Our Lady at Fatima. It was also the 37th anniversary of the near fatal attempt on the pope’s life. He would credit the intercession of Mary, specifically Our Lady of Fatima with saving his life. Exactly one year later, Pope John Paul II would make a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima to celebrate Mass and deliver a homily of Mary’s message of love to the world. My own devotion to Mary grew strong when my son David, was deployed to Afghanistan with the Marine Corp. In my article, One Family, One Marine, One Lord of All, I wrote about my relationship with the Blessed Mother which I quote in part, “As Queen of Families she understands the fears and anxieties of departures and separa-tions, the self-sacrifice of a family and a son and the hope and joy for reunion and homecoming.” Mary provided comfort to me as I prayed for her intercession to keep my son safe. Upon his return, David would tell me he felt a presence protecting him. Although May is the month for Mary, we can turn to her at any time to intercede on our behalf with her son. Mary, the morning star who points the way to her Son, is a model of faith who trusted in God, submitting and surrendering to his will. It’s a model for each of us to follow in our own lives. In the closing words of St. Pope John Paul II’s, May 13, 1982 homily at Fatima, “Yes, here and throughout the Church, in the heart of every indi-vidual and in the world as a whole, may you be blessed, O Mary, our sweet Mother.” May you receive many blessings through the intercession of Mary.

Outreach Ministries at St. Elizabeth’s: Twenty years ago, Deacon Bob Kratchman began an Outreach Ministry for the poor and hungry at St. Elizabeth’s. The ministry has evolved into our monthly food bag collection as we distribute grocery bags on the first Sunday of the month and parishioners return them on the second Sunday. The current beneficiaries of the grocery bags are: Oasis and Star of Hope in Paterson, Fr. Frank English, and CUMAC. The chal-lenge is that 10 years ago we could distribute as many as 359 bags on a given Sun-day. Now with 500 bags given out at Mass, an average of 224 are returned. This food bag distribution is a direct and impactful way to assist our neighbors. Cash, checks, or gift card donations are accepted.

Another outreach begun by Deacon Bob Kratchman, is the Van Ministry. During the week, our van daily picks up bakery goods and produce from local stores and delivers them to Oasis & Eva’s Kitchen. Parishioners are sent out “two by two”, a driver and an assistant, to pick up food and bring it to Paterson. From Monday to Friday, 8:30-11:30 am start to finish, teams execute the Van Ministry. Weekly or monthly, men and women, retired or not, drivers and non-drivers, the schedule can be made to work for our volunteers.

Please consider a share in these corporal works of mercy. Ministries always need to be replenished, and a good cause always needs to be re-invigorated. Please take a bag each month and return it for someone whose family is hungry. If you would like more information about helping the Van Ministry, please call the Parish Cen-ter at 201-891-1122. St. E’s is caring for others “right in our own back yard.” Your help is necessary and appreciated. Thank you for your prayerful sacrifice and sup-port!
