Voters meeting today

The annual voters meeting will get underway after second service this morning. All voters and those eligible to become voters are encouraged to attend. Non-voters are also welcome to sit in and observe. Myths or reality? Whether in movies, on the internet, or by word of mouth, a great deal of attention is given to the paranormal and supernatural (ghosts, demons, haunted houses, etc.). At this Wednesday’s Bible class we will look to God’s Word for direction on how to think of these things. Everyone is welcome.

Vicar arrives tomorrow Our summer vicar, Sam Naumann arrives tomorrow. He will be here this week and next, and then also from Aug. 19 through Sep. 11. Sam will begin his second year of seminary this fall. During his time here he will be working with Pastor Eichstadt, observing and leading Bible classes, Sunday services, confirmation classes, etc. He will be staying with the Mielke family. Sam will be conducting the services next Sunday while Pastor Eichstadt is out of town.

VBS next week! Vacation Bible School begins a week from tomorrow, July 24. There is still time to invite others to join us. The signup sheet for snacks is on the cupboard doors. A VBS staff meeting will be held Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. It is especially important that teachers attend this. Flyers are available below the mailboxes. Help yourself. This year we also have yard signs. See Pastor if you would like to put one in your yard. Share the invitation on your social media pages.

Friendship Sunday VBS will culminate with Friendship Sunday on July 30. There will be only one service (9:30 a.m.), followed by the congregational picnic. What a joy to not only receive the good news of forgiveness ourselves, but to share it with everyone we possibly can! Do you have a friend, classmate, co-worker, or neighbor whom you could tell about the Savior who died for them?

Picnic in two weeks The church picnic will be held July 30 at Minooka Park, part of the Waukesha County Park System. You may pay upon entering the park ($4) or purchase an annual entrance sticker. The park includes biking/hiking trails, a beach/swimming, and sand volleyball.

From the ILC Board of Regents Our ILC Facilities Manager is seeking contractors within the CLC willing to be on a list available to the Immanuel Maintenance Department. The list could include contractors for roofing/building, electrical, plumbing, concrete, etc., who could be called upon for expertise or to submit bids on large projects to save money for Immanuel. Some of the work would require the contractor to be licensed and bonded, but such a list would still obviously be helpful. Those interested can contact Paul Heinze (715-456-7194/[email protected]).

Out of town Pastor and Sue will be out of town Friday through Sunday. If needed, Pastor may be reached on his cell: 414-688-4517.

P Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. P O almighty God, merciful Father, C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have

ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the

Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

Offering

Offering hymn: I Am Trusting Thee, Lord Jesus

I am trusting Thee, Lord Jesus,

Trusting only Thee;

Trusting Thee for full salvation,

Great and free.

Prayer of the Church (Minute of silence for personal prayer and reflection upon the Lord’s Word)

P: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

C: Amen.

P: God, our Father, in these last days we experience conflict in our families. Husbands and wives struggle to stay together until death parts them. Brothers and sisters are at odds with one another, and there are disagreements with extended families.

C: Almighty Father, heal our families.

P: Lord Jesus, You are our Prince of Peace, yet You did not come to this world to bring peace here and now. We experience the divisions that the sharp two-edged sword of Your Word brings.

C: Lord Jesus, give us strength to stand firm in Your Word of truth.

P: Jesus, You have called us to follow You and we have been baptized into Your holy name. You have set us apart as Your witnesses, and You have called us to go to the ends of the earth with the good news of Your unconditional, all-inclusive love.

C: Jesus, lead us and all Your people to reveal You to others through our words and actions.

P: Holy Spirit, Comforter in every trouble, there are those who are struggling with troubles both within and without. We pray that You would lift them up with the Lord’s promises of help and deliverance. We pray in behalf of all who have suffered harm and loss due to the recent

Salutation and Collect of the Day P The Lord be with you.

P Let us pray: Almighty God, open our ears, our hearts, and our minds to hear Your Word and lead us by Your Spirit to follow it, especially when doing so creates challenges and hardships for us as Your people, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Old Testament lesson: Jeremiah 28:5-9

The promise of peace that never comes is no peace at all. P Blessed are they who hear the Word of God and keep it. Hallelujah!

Epistle lesson:

P The epistle lesson is recorded in Romans 6:1-11

Peace with God through Jesus is the source of our new life and our motive to live for the Lord.

P This is the Word of the Lord.

Apostles’ Creed

C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn: 320 (red hymnal) Lord Jesus, Think on M e

Sermon: Matthew 10:34-42

“Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take up his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it. “He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”

Real Peace is Worth Fighting For

I. Jesus brings conflict.

II. We are involved in the fight.

III. Jesus’ promises give us strength.
