Christmas Message It is for me a very happy coincidence that my arrival in Arklow Parish and the appearance of a new look Parish Newsletter are happening at the same time This Newsletter which it is hoped will appear periodically throughout the year is but one of the hoped for objectives of the Arklow Parish Plan 2008~20 1 2 and with my fellow priests and Parish Pastoral Council I warmly welcome its publication for good communication is such a vital and essential part of parish life today

Through this 1st Edition of our new Newsletter I am delighted to send Christmas greetings not only to all our parishioners both at home and overseas but to all in the wider community in fact to all people of goodwill I know that Christmas means many different things to different people for some it is a time of homecoming for some it is a great family time for others not so for others it is a time of great joy and happiness while for others it is a time of pain and sorrow and Joss The sharp change in the economic situation in our country will have a big impact on many families this year particularly on those whose jobs are gone Whatever your situation this Christmas know that you are very much in our thoughts and prayers

Jesus Christ for those who believe is the very heart of Christmas So often all the busyness and distractions around Christmas obscures that fact He came into the world to show Gods deep and personal love for each one of us Each one of us is precious and unique in Gods eyes regardless of the many human limitations we each live with In turn Jesus invites each of us to reflect that love in our care compassion and concern for one another especially for the least in our commun ity and our world

In the name of our parish community I extend a very warm welcome to you all to join with us for Christmas Celebrations I appreciate that in this community as in all others that many people for a greal variety of reasons dont regularly worship with us Jesus came into the world so that we might be reconciled with God and with one another May th is coming Christmas season begin to bring healing where hurt conflict or a sense of isolation or exclusion exists There is a warm welcome and a place for everyone in our Parish Community not only at Christmas but always

With my fellow priests Canon Piert Fr Paul and Fr Tom together with all who work and minister in our parish may we wish you every blessing for Christmas and 2009 May we thank aU who contribute to the wellbeing and building up of the Parish throughout the year

eat exp latlo I remember my earliest Christmases as a time of great wonder when my mother told us of the Baby Jesus birthday and that if we were good Daddy Christmas would come on the night before His birthday and leave gifts for all of us At that time Christmas Eve was a fast day which meant that you couldn t have meat or much else for your dinner so we used to go to 7 oclock Mass on Christmas morning and having visited the crib we got home as quickly as posshysible for our breakfast which was delightful We would then again take out our presents which we had already opened before Mass I cant explain how or why but it seems looking back that everyone got what they had hoped to get Of course we were aware somewhat that you shouldnt ask for very expensive toys as Daddy Christmas had so many boys and girls all over the world who would also have to be given a gift

The lead-up to Christmas was a wonderful time and I remember the teachers in the lower school Mrs OCarroll Mrs OConnor and Mrs Doyle used to have a Christmas tree laden with presents fo r every boy in the school This marked the beginning of our holidays Then every evening when it was getting dark we would go up the street to see the toys in the shops The shops included Johnny Curran s Gallaghers and Annesleys Annesleys was the best and had a beautiful set of trains on tracks which occupied the window and went around endlessly to our great amusement Annesleys also had Toyland upstairs and I think that is where I first saw Santa Claus - Ive no idea whatever became of poor old Daddy Christmas Whether he fell into disfavour or was pensioned off I really cant say

St Stephens Day was a great day too We would go out with the wran (wren) which meant a couple of chaps would go from door to door carrying a stick which would have a sprig of holly and usually a bit of rag tied to the stick which was carried horizontally between the boys At each door you recited a silly little poem about the wren which was caught in the furze If the door was opened you might get a halfpenny or maybe be told to go away awwa dati Christmas Long ago by Robbie Tyrrell

Begun in 1984 this year wi ll be the 26th year of the parish Christmas Carol Service It was originally the idea of Monsignor Gallagher who w a nted to b ri ng the parish together to celebrate this wonderful feast through song Loc al parish b ased choirs schools music ia ns and talents are invited to perform Christmas hymns and songs a round the seven traditional St Luke readings

Hugely important in its foundation was the involvement of congregational singing that always p roves to be a spiritual ~ and joyful exp erience

In keeping with the Christmas spirit the occasion is a charitable one a lso In its early yea rs people would bring food parc els for the poor in their hundreds Carloads of much needed food would then be driven to the Tallaght area of Dublin (Msgr Galaghers previous parish) and distributed to the neediest by St Vincent DePaul As times have changed since the building of Arus Lorc6in (2003) the parish has linked up with the Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa (Mother Kevin) and now donations are given towards the mission

This year is expected to be a huge success as usual A Sister from the mission wi ll address the congregation to encourage our support Many wonderful performanc es will be showcased with the Arklow Shipping Silver Band bringing the whole seN ice together We invite you a ll to come and share with us in this truly holy and happy experience on
