He then added these words: “But being holy depends on the depth of our spiritual lives, on the intensity of prayer, and of continual formation, which deepens our understanding of the person of Jesus Christ and the Gospel he proclaimed.” Openness to continual growth and development (both as individuals and as communities) is the foundation of all ongoing formation in the faith. Church documents speak of four essential areas of formation – human, intellectual, pastoral and spiritual. These four aspects are distinct but not separate. They necessarily overlap and interweave. Although at times we may focus on one aspect rather than another, we need to hold all four in balance if we are to grow as human beings and as Christians in harmony of body, mind, heart and spirit. As the diocesan agency committed to adult faith formation we rejoice at Archbishop Peter’s stress on a truly ‘holistic’ formation which addresses all aspects of our lives. We hope that the events and courses coming up next term will be of help in this process of ongoing formation. Archbishop Peter also comments in his pastoral letter on how the sheer busyness and continual stress of our daily lives can so easily drain us so that we have little or no time left to refresh ourselves through stillness, prayer, reading, reflection and dialogue. We all appreciate the wisdom of having an MOT done on our car. We ourselves are infinitely more precious. By being open to ongoing human, intellectual, pastoral and spiritual formation we allow the Spirit to recharge our spiritual batteries, to top up the oil of our faith and to pump up the tyres of our energy. After all, if we ourselves are running on empty, then we have little to offer to others. Fr John O’Toole, Director

MESSAGE FROM FATHER JOHN

BODY, MIND, HEART AND SPIRIT

Our new Archbishop, Peter Smith, in his first pastoral letter (which was read on the First Sunday of Advent) reminded us that all of us, lay persons, religious and clergy, are called to be holy men and women; we are called to be saints.
