The writer of Second Peter understands that his intended Christian audience, in his day and ours, is living in the “meantime,” that is, the time between the beginning and the end. But this “meantime” also represents for the writer of Second Peter a mean-spirited time of senseless depravity and uncontrolled lust and greed, a time of darkness and not doing what is right in God’s eyes. And so the writer of Second Peter calls upon the Christian reader to wait upon the fulfillment God’s promises through Jesus Christ with enduring patience and steadfast faith, “leading lives of holiness and godliness,” for this is a time of God’s patience, “not wanting any to perish, but for all to come to repentance” (2 nd Peter 3:9,11). In this “meantime,” the writer of Second Peter suggests that the Lord will “rescue the godly from trial, and keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment” (2 nd Peter 2: 9). For the Christian, it is a time of resisting the slanderous ways of the ungodly and the corrupting influences of the unrighteous. Again, the writer of Second Peter suggests that this “day of judgment” is an unexpected time reserved for fire (2 nd Peter 3:7), a fire of purification that burns off the ways of the godless. Until that “day,” the writer of Second Peter provides a prescription for the Christian life, a formula to “escape from the corruption that is in the world because of lust” (2 nd Peter 1:4). The writer of Second Peter suggests that such living according to these Christian principles is, in fact, participation in the divine nature. “For this very reason, you must make every effort to support your faith with goodness, and goodness with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with endurance, and endurance with godliness, and godliness with mutual affection, and mutual affection with love. CHRIST’S UNITED’S NEWS & VIEWS JANUARY 2015

PASTOR’S PARAGRAPHS

GRACE AND PEACE IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD AND JESUS OUR LORD

This greeting from the writer of Second Peter is intended by him to guide the Christian reader to hold fast to the faith received through the promise of God and the establishment of righteousness by and through the Savior Jesus Christ in a world filled with false prophetic witnesses and destructive, ungodly behaviors. And so the writer of Second Peter calls upon the Christian reader to wait upon the fulfillment God’s promises through Jesus Christ with enduring patience and steadfast faith, “leading lives of holiness and godliness,” for this is a time of God’s patience, “not wanting any to perish, but for all to come to repentance” (2nd Peter 3:9,11). In this “meantime,” the writer of Second Peter suggests that the Lord will “rescue the godly from trial, and keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment” (2nd Peter 2: 9). For the Christian, it is a time of resisting the slanderous ways of the ungodly and the corrupting influences of the unrighteous. Again, the writer of Second Peter suggests that this “day of judgment” is an unexpected time reserved for fire (2nd Peter 3:7), a fire of purification that burns off the ways of the godless. Until that “day,” the writer of Second Peter provides a prescription for the Christian life, a formula to “escape from the corruption that is in the world because of lust” (2nd Peter 1:4). The writer of Second Peter suggests that such living according to these Christian principles is, in fact, participation in the divine nature. “For this very reason, you must make every effort to support your faith with goodness, and goodness with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with endurance, and endurance with godliness, and godliness with mutual affection, and mutual affection with love. are yours and are increasing among you, they keep you from being ineffective and unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2nd Peter 1:5-8). For the writer of these words, it’s all about confirming our call and election as recipients of God’s grace, forgiveness and mercy in Jesus Christ, “providing for our entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior” (2nd Peter 1:11). Our Christian faith depicts a life of goodness, knowledge, self-control, endurance, godliness, mutual affection and love. Attention to these prescripts is like “a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises” (2nd Peter 1:19). Such attention will provide protection from the exploitation of “licentious ways and deceptive words” (2nd Peter 2:2-3). And so in the “meantime,” “while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation” (2nd Peter 3:14-15). --Pastor John

A young man who had been raised as an atheist was training to be an Olympic diver. The only religious

influence in his life came from his outspoken Christian friend. The young diver never really paid much attention

to his friend’s sermons, but he heard them often. One night the diver went to the indoor pool at the college he

attended. The lights were all off, but as the pool had big skylights and the moon was bright, there was plenty of

light to practice by. The young man climbed up to the highest diving board and as he turned his back to the pool

on the edge of the board and extended his arms out, he saw his shadow on the wall. The shadow of his body was

in the shape of a cross. Instead of diving, he knelt down and asked God to come into his life. As the young man

stood, a maintenance man walked in and turned the lights on. The pool had been drained for repairs

Sewing Days

Making LWR Mission Quilts provides an opportunity for Lutherans in the U.S. to answer God’s call to love and serve our neighbors in need. To those that receive them, they are a tangible symbol of God’s love and compassion. Knotting workdays will resume on January 20 if the weather permits! All sewers and non-sewers are invited. There is something for all skills to do. NOTE! The ladies can always use material to use for the quilts. If you have material left over from sewing projects, old curtains, sheets, etc. bring it in for the ladies to use. And don’t throw out that old mattress pad. Bring it to the church and we can use it for filler for the quilts. It will help to keep someone warm when it is distributed by LWR. Every piece helps.

If you cannot get to a workday, but would still like to work on a quilt at home, or if you would like more information, talk to Judy Mecouch or Georgetta Bowes.

THE WEST END FAIR stand

In 2015 the West End Fair will celebrate its 90th year. The volunteers at our food stand thought it would be appropriate to also celebrate the history of our fair stand. We are in need of help to do this. We are looking for pictures, articles, and any information anyone would have about the stand’s history. Memories and stories are also welcomed.

Give the items to Bev Catherman, Becky Dunkle, or drop them off in the office. Make sure to have your items marked so we can return them to you as soon as copies are made. Thank you for your help with this project.

Any questions? Talk to Bev or Becky.

PICTORIAL DIRECTORY Plans are being made to do a pictorial directory next year. To that end we are looking for pictures in any kind of format from our 50th anniversary dinner. Please talk to Linda Swartz if you have any pictures from that dinner. We would like to make copies of them to be included in the new directory. If you have pictures from another church activity, we would welcome them as well. Thanks!

Coffee Cans Needed We are in need of coffee cans to be used to send altar flowers home following a worship service. If you have any to spare, please drop them off at the kitchen or in the office.

Volunteers Sought

We are looking for volunteers to fill the following positions: 1. Baby News Correspondent When a new baby is born to a member of the congregation, the responsibility of the baby news

correspondent is to contact the family and get “vital statistics” and then write a short article for the newsletter. Talk to Margie if you would like to tackle this position.

2. Greeters, Lay Readers, Communion Assistants, Ushers and Sound System Operators. Our list of people willing to do these jobs keeps dwindling. Will you help? Sign up on the attached “volunteer form” and drop them on Margie’s desk or put them in the offering plate.

Communions

Page 8: CHRIST’S UNITED’S NEWS & VIEWS3 INDOOR BLOCK PARTY Take a break from the winter doldrums by coming to a FREE community wide block party for all ages at Christ’s United Lutheran

Communions for all confirmed members must be recorded in the parish register annually. If you do not commune on a regular basis, we ask that you fill out a communion record card (one per year is all we need) so we know you have communed. The cards are located in the racks on the back of the pews. Cards may be put in the offering plate or handed to an usher.

Memorabilia The following memorabilia items are still available for anyone interested in purchasing anything:

Wooden Miniatures of the Church - $10.00 Church Prints - $20.00

Blankets - $10.00 Christmas Cards - $10.00

12 cards per box feature a winter picture of the church

Talk to Bev Catherman if you have questions about, or would like to purchase, any of these items.

Informants Wanted We like to publish news about our members in the newsletter, but we need your help to do so. If you know of interesting information about any of our members (youth or adult), i.e. an award or recognition, a funny tale or exciting adventure, please let Margie know about it so we can include it in an issue of Christ’s United’s News & Views.

Have a Favorite Hymn?

Over the past few years, some of you have been requesting favorite hymns and gospel songs and for that we give many thanks. Because of U.S. copyright laws, we do not have permission to reproduce or copy all of our favorites. You may choose selections from the following hymnals: Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW), Lutheran Book of Worship (LBW) and With One Voice (WOV). We are also permitted to use hymns that are in the “Public Domain”. It’s all very complicated. So, keep your suggestions coming and we will be happy to sort out and use all of your suggestions. Give any requests to Gary Hackenberg, Margie or Pastor John. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prayer Chain

The Prayer Chain is a group of men and women of Christ’s United who pray for the concerns and requests of Christ’s United’s members and friends. Someone in need of prayer calls the church office and requests to be put on the Prayer Chain. Each member of the Prayer Chain then receives either a phone call or an email notifying them of a prayer request. The prayer chain member receiving the phone call then calls one other person and so on down the list. Those notified by email do not have to pass it on. Would you be willing to pray for someone in need? It is reassuring to know that you are supported by the prayers of others and not alone with your concern. If you would like to be a member of the Prayer Chain, fill out the following and put it in the offering plate or on Margie’s desk. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CAMP MOUNT LUTHER

Campersons Meeting January 25, 2015 3:00 p.m.

This event gives participants the chance to find out what’s going on at camp and tell the story to others! It will be held on Sunday, January 25, 2015, at 3:00 p.m. at the Evergreen Center at Mount Luther. Each congregation in the Upper Susquehanna Synod is asked to send a representative to the event. Campersons serve as liaisons between the camp and the congregation, promoting outdoor ministries. Each congregation who sends a camperson to this meeting will receive Camel Bucks for the camp store to pass out to all your congregation's campers.

Campersons are also invited and encouraged to attend the camp's annual Turkey Dinner, starting at 4:00 p.m. that day. Campersons will be given a half-price discount for their ticket to the dinner.

Turkey Benefit Dinner January 25, 2015 4:00-6:00 p.m. This event will celebrate Benjamin Franklin’s Birthday. Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of our country. Camp Mount Luther thought it would be fitting to have a turkey dinner to honor his January birthday! You are invited to come to his birthday party and support camp at the same time! The dinner will be held on Sunday, January 25, 2015, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the Evergreen Center at Mount Luther. The menu will consist of turkey and all the trimmings. A freewill offering will be collected to help defray the cost of the dinner. Reservations are required and can be made by contacting the camp office at (570) 922-1587 or [email protected]. Deadline for ordering is Tuesday, January 20, 2015, at 9:00 a.m.

I wish I had a crystal ball,

Not to predict the first snowfall,

Nor yet to locate in the ground

Where precious gold or oil is found.

But to answer questions like these,

“What did I do with the car keys?

Where is Johnny’s missing mitten?

The recipe I had written?

Where did I put the borrowed book?

Where are my glasses so I can look?”
