1 CHRIST’S UNITED’S NEWS & VIEWS JUNE 2011 PASTOR’S PARAGRAPHS THE WAY In John 14:6, Jesus describes himself as ―the way, the truth and the life. No one can come to the Father except by (through) me.‖ In this vivid description, followers of Jesus are invited and encouraged to understand their lives in accordance with both the manner in which Jesus guides and leads us unto the eternal presence of the Father and also by which Jesus himself is the model and example of the manner in which we are called to live our lives. As the ―way,‖ Jesus is both the path we are to follow as well as the manner by which we are to conduct ourselves on the way: ―follow this way‖ and ―do it this way.‖ In our world, we are confronted by numerous paths for which we may choose. The path that leads to success. The path that leads to happiness. The path that leads to financial security. Each of these paths promises and offers some type of reward or payment for our choice to follow that particular path and for our efforts to stay on that path. The truth of the matter, as Jesus described, is that the only path that is able to get us to our ultimate destination is through and by the way of Jesus. Other paths may well lead to temporary glimpses of wealth, power, satisfaction, happiness and the like. But the span of each of these paths is limited. The way of Jesus, though, is eternal whereby the promise is unending. Additionally, the ―way‖ of Jesus is more than a path to follow; it is the ―way‖ to live while on the path. Access to the eternal truth and life in the Father is much more than assenting to a way of believing; beliefs are given their proper perspective through actions. The ―way‖ Jesus lived is the ―way‖ we are also called to live. This is the ―way‖ of obedience to the Father‘s commands as well as selfless, sacrificial and unconditional love given to others. The true meaning and purpose of our lives is revealed through an understanding of God‘s will and promise that leads to life, and this revelation is given full disclosure through the ―way‖ Jesus taught and the ―way‖ he conducted his life. Life is to be found in both where Jesus leads us as well as in imitating how Jesus acts as he leads us. --Pastor John

CHRIST’S UNITED’S NEWS & VIEWS JUNE 2011

PASTOR’S PARAGRAPHS

THE WAY

In John 14:6, Jesus describes himself as ―the way, the truth and the life. PENTECOST

There are three "mega-festivals" commemorated in the Christian calendar. The first two, Christmas and Easter, are well known to both believers and non- believers. But it's possible that even liturgical Christians may not be as familiar with the third, the festival of Pentecost. God the Father's wonderful Christmas gift of His one and only Son, and Christ's Easter triumph over the power of sin, death, and the devil would be of no benefit to us if the Holy Spirit did not give us the gift of saving faith. Through the Word and Sacraments, the Holy Spirit gives us the power to believe and trust in Christ as our Savior. This precious gift of faith in the saving work of our Lord Jesus Christ is the reason Pentecost is the third "mega-festival" of the church and why we celebrate it with such joy and thanksgiving.

The two most common Pentecost symbols represent the Holy Spirit. A descending dove is frequently used to symbolize the coming of the Spirit, since the Gospel of Luke reports that the Holy Spirit came to Jesus at his baptism in the form of a dove. (Luke 3:22). Tongues of fire are also used to symbolize the Holy Spirit, based on the account of Pentecost found in Acts 2:1-4. The liturgical color for the Day of Pentecost is bright red, which reminds us of the fire of the Spirit. Bright red is also the color of the geraniums we use to decorate the sanctuary on Pentecost (June 12). If you would like to donate some geraniums for this purpose (the plants will then be planted around the church), please fill out the form below and return it to Idella Zimmerman or Margie. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vacation bible school

When: Sunday, June 19-Friday, June 24 6:00-8:00 p.m. Where: Christ‘s United Lutheran Church Who: All children ages 3 years through 6th grade Older teens and adults are needed to help!

West End Community Vacation Bible School – June 19-24, 2011

Come waltz through the jungle at this year‘s ―Rainforest VBS‖ to be held June 19-24, 2011 at Christ‘s United Lutheran Church. Each evening will begin at 6:00 pm as the children, ages 3 years – 6th grade, gather in the sanctuary with their teachers and helpers. The fun will continue as the children move to Bible study, games, music, snack, and crafts. Each Bible lesson this year will be represented by a rainforest animal as a visual reminder to the children; for example, as the children learn about Peter walking on water, they will make a craft with a frog, reminding them to Fully Rely On God (F.R.O.G.) as Peter did when he stepped out of the boat and walked toward Jesus. Each evening will close at 8:00 pm. On Friday, all VBS children and their families will be invited to a pizza party. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins are welcome to come hear songs and skits prepared by the children throughout the week of VBS. Come for an evening or come for the entire week, your help is needed and your children are our ministry. Please join the excitement during the week of VBS! For more information contact Judy Moyer or Lori Jo Showalter.

CHURCH PICNIC

A fellowship picnic is being planned for July 10. There will be only one service that Sunday, at 10:15 a.m. After the service we will have a picnic here at the church. Weather permitting, most of it will be outside. If not we will use the fellowship hall. The committee will supply hot dogs, rolls and drink. Please bring a covered dish, your table service, and if you are not a hot dog eater, bring what you would like. A grill will be available We are planning on playing money bingo and whatever else we can come up with. If you have any game you would like to play, please bring it along. So mark your calendar for July 10 for a great day of food and fellowship. If you would like more information, talk to Bev Catherman. .

WEST END FAIR

It is not too early to start making plans to help at our stand at this year‘s West End Fair, which will be operating August 1-6

As we do every year, we will need help, and lots of it. Bev Catherman will be looking for help in the dining areas and Shirley Kerstetter will need people to work in the kitchen. We will also need volunteers to wash dishes, clean up, and cashier. In addition, we will need pies baked and items donated.

Watch the bulletins and next month‘s newsletter for more information and the bulletin board outside of the sanctuary for sign-up sheets. Please don’t wait to be asked to help…we‘re asking now…just sign up to help where and when you can.

CAMP MOUNT LUTHER 2010 CML camping brochures are now available in the vestibule. If someone in your family is interested in a camping experience this summer, pick one up. Christ‘s United will pay ½ of the basic registration fee for any member who wishes to attend camp this summer. The brochure and registration information is also available on-line at www.campmountluther.org.

Cookbook UPDATE NOW ACCEPTING RECIPES

Recipe submission forms are available on the bulletin stand and on the stand in the vestibule as well as in the newsletter. Please submit as many recipes as you wish. We‘d love to have recipes from church members and friends alike. We are hoping to get 500 recipes by the deadline of May 31st. Please get your recipes in a as soon as possible so we don‘t have them all to submit at the last minute. It is expected that the cost of a cookbook will be $10.00. There is a form at the bottom of the recipe submission form to reserve copies of the cookbook. This will help us to determine how many cookbooks to order. We are hoping to have the cookbooks in time for the 2011 West End Fair. Recipes can be handed in to Margie at the church office. If you have any questions, talk to Kim or Sue Blyler.

The good Lord didn’t create anything without a purpose, but the fly comes close.

AS I’VE MATURED

I‟ve learned…that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is stalk them and hope they

panic and give in.

I‟ve learned…that one good turn gets most of the blankets.

I‟ve learned…that it takes years to build up trust, and it only takes suspicion, not proof, to destroy it.

I‟ve learned…that whatever hits the fan will not be evenly distributed.

I‟ve learned…that you shouldn‟t compare yourself to others—they are more screwed up than you think.

I‟ve learned…that depression is merely anger without enthusiasm.

I‟ve learned…that you can keep vomiting long after you think you‟re finished.

I‟ve learned …to not sweat the petty things, and not pet the sweaty things.

I‟ve learned…age is a very high price to pay for maturity.

I‟ve learned…that I don‟t suffer from insanity, I enjoy it.

I‟ve learned…that we are responsible for what we do, unless we are celebrities.

I‟ve learned…that artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.

I‟ve learned…that 99% of the time when something isn‟t working in your house, one of your kids did it.

I‟ve learned…that there is a fine line between genius and insanity.

I‟ve learned…that the people you care most about in life are taken from you too soon and all the less

important ones just never go away.

This is used to support the on-going ministries of the Women of the ELCA. (2) Mission Ingathering—this year is designated to support Mt. Luther as they continue to help children/youth and adults grow in faith through camping and retreat experiences. (3) In-Kind Gifts (Personal Ingathering). This year these gifts will go to the Ronald McDonald House in Danville, which is a safe place for families of children in the hospital to stay. Some items needed: individual juice boxes - individual snack items - baby wipes – diapers - anti-bacterial hand soap - crib sheets - baby monitors - laundry stain remover - spray starch - laundry detergent - post-its (3x3) - Forever postage stamps - shaving cream – deodorant - feminine hygiene products - Jet Dry - automatic dish detergent in powder form - 409 cleaner - 9v & AA batteries - copier paper - shaving cream - Mr. Clean Magic Erasers – socks – 30-minute phone cards - DVD movies - personal care sized toiletries. The Bible study is based on Matthew 25:34-40, ―Welcoming the Stranger‖ which will be led by Pastor Vickie Brown of First Lutheran, Mifflinburg. We should have a delegate from our congregation. Anyone can attend as a participant but would not have a vote. Judy Mecouch will be attending as a member of the USSWO Board so she cannot be our delegate. All attending must register. If you are interested in attending the convention as a delegate or participant see Judy Mecouch or Audrey Crone for a registration form. Registration is due by June 18. --Audrey Crone

THE FLAG SPEAKS

I am the United States flag, the symbol of many things.

I am whatever you make me, nothing more, nothing less.

I am the promise of a nation, a mother‟s dream, a child‟s desire.

I am your belief in your future, your hope for your family.

I am the flag of many races—white, black, yellow, red.

I am the sweat of a hard day‟s labor, the thought of a brain, the pain of decision.

I am the Constitution and the statutes, the courts and the legislatures, the voting booth and the soldier,

the street sweeper and the executive.

I am compelling reason, a new idea, definition of purpose.

I am earth and sky and sea; I am wind and rain and sun.

I am the right to work and own; the right to play and the right to pray.

I am whatever you make me, nothing more, nothing less.

Have a Favorite Hymn? Over the past few years, some of you have been requesting favorite hymns and gospel songs and for that we give many thanks. Because of U.S. copyright laws, we do not have permission to reproduce or copy many of our favorites. You may choose selections from the following hymnals: Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW), Lutheran Book of Worship (LBW) and With One Voice (WOV). We are also permitted to use hymns that are in the ―Public Domain‖. It‘s all very complicated. So, keep your suggestions coming and the Worship and Music Committee will be happy to sort out and use all of your suggestions that copyright laws permit. Please put the title or first line of your song(s) on a piece of paper and give it to Margie, or any member of the Worship and Music Committee (Bev Catherman, Paula Christy, Gary Hackenberg, Judy Mecouch or Barry Spangler). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hymn Request -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF CHILDREN

Steven (age 3) hugged and kissed his mom good night. “I love you so much that when you die, I‟m going to

bury you outside my bedroom window.”

Brittany (age 4) had an earache and wanted a pain killer. She tried in vain to take the lid off the bottle. Seeing

her frustration, her Mom explained it was a child-proof cap and she‟d have to open it for her. Eyes wide with

wonder, the little girl asked: „How does it know it‟s me?‟

Susan (age 4) was drinking juice when she got the hiccups. „Please don‟t give me this juice again,‟ she said. „it

makes my teeth cough.‟

DJ (age 4) stepped onto the bathroom scale and asked, „How much do I cost?‟

Marc (age 4) was engrossed in a young couple that were hugging and kissing in a restaurant. Without taking

his eyes off them, he asked his dad: „Why is he whispering in her mouth?‟

Clinton (age 5) was in the bedroom looking worried. When his Mom asked what was troubling him, he replied,

„I don‟t know what‟ll happen with this bed when I get married. How will my wife fit in it?‟

James (age 4) was listening to a Bible story. His Dad read, „The man name Lot was warned to take his wife

and flee out of the city, but his wife looked back and was turned to salt.‟ Concerned, James asked, “What

happened to the flea?”

Tammy (age 4) was with her mother when they met an elderly, rather wrinkled woman her Mom knew. Tammy

looked at her for a while and then asked, „Why doesn‟t your skin fit your face?‟

Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness. Everything changed with me since March 2010 and that is one year. I had to see a lot of doctors and didn’t get my good handwriting back. Had a terrible cough all this time and had a lot of backward falls. June, Carol & Frances helped take care of me. Thanks to everyone for prayers, food flowers, cards, visits, phone calls, Pastor John’s visits , afghan and many more things. --Ethel J Wenrich, Sister in Christ

Thank you to everyone who purchased quilt raffle tickets or made a donation to our project. A total of $361 was received and will be sent to LWR Project Comfort. Doris Shively was the winner of the full-size quilt and Megan Catherman won the lap quilt. Thank you also to Kim Blyler who printed the raffle tickets. --The Women of the ELCA When my grandson, Billy, and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep

from attracting pesky insects. Still, a few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered,

“It‟s no use Grandpa. The mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights.”

FATHERS THEN & NOW In 1900, fathers prayed their children would learn English. Today, fathers pray their children will speak English. In 1900, a father‘s horsepower meant his horses. Today, it’s the size of his minivan. In 1900, if a father put a roof over his family‘s head he was a success. Today, it takes a roof, deck, pool, and four-car garage. And that’s just the vacation home. In 1900, a father waited for the doctor to tell him when the baby arrived. Today, a father must wear a smock, know how to breathe, and make sure film is in the video camera. In 1900, fathers passed clothing to their sons. Today, kids wouldn’t touch Dad’s clothes if they were sliding naked down an icicle. In 1900, fathers could count on children to join the family business. Today, fathers pray their kids will soon come home from college long enough to teach them how to work the computer and set the VCR In 1900, fathers pined for old country Romania, Italy, or Russia. Today, fathers pine for old country Hank Williams. In 1900, a father smoked a pipe. If he tries that today, he gets sent outside after a lecture on lip cancer. In 1900, fathers shook their children gently and whispered, ―Wake up, it‘s time for school.‖ Today, kids shake their fathers violently at 4 a.m., shouting: “Wale up, it’s time for hockey practice.” In 1900, a father came home from work to find his wife and children at the supper table. Today, a father comes home to a note: “Jimmy’s at baseball, Cindy’s at gymnastics, I’m at adult-ed., pizza in fridge. In 1900, a father gave a pencil box for Christmas, and the kid was all smiles. Today, a father spends $800 at Toys “r” Us, and the kids screams, “I wanted Sega!” In 1900, fathers and sons would have heart-to-heart conversations while fishing in a stream. Today, fathers pluck the headphones off their son’s ears and shout, “WHEN YOU HAVE A MINUTE..”

In 1900, if a father had breakfast in bed, it was eggs and bacon and ham and potatoes. Today, it’s Special K, soy milk, dry toast and a lecture on cholesterol. In 1900, a Father‘s Day gift would be a hand tool. Today, he’ll get a digital organizer. In 1900, fathers said, ―A man‘s home is his castle.‖ Today, they way, “Welcome to the money pit.” In 1900, ―a good day at the market‖ meant Father brought home feed for the horses. Today, “a good day at the market” means Dad got in early on an IPO. In 1900, a happy meal was when Father shared funny stories around the table. Today, a happy meal is what Dad buys at McDonald’s. In 1900, a father was involved if he spanked the kid now and then. Today, a father’s involved only if he coaches Little League and organizes Boy Scouts and car pools. In 1900, when fathers entered the room, children often rose to attention. Today, kids glance up and grunt, “Dad, you’re invading my space.” In 1900, fathers threatened their daughter‘s suitors with shotguns if the girl came home late. Today, fathers break the ice by saying, “So…how long have you had that earring?” In 1900, fathers pined for the old school, which meant a one-room, red-brick building. Today, fathers pine for the old school, which means Dr. J and Mickey Mantle In 1900, fathers were never truly appreciated. Today, fathers are never truly appreciated.

SCHOOL KITS

A school kit may provide the only supplies for children returning to school after the disruption of war. School kits help parents continue their children's education, even while living in a refugee camp, for example. A school kit may also be used in adult literacy classes.

Your group can also help LWR get school kits to the people who need them by donating a brick on the Good Samaritan Quilt Plaza or by making a contribution to the Project Comfort Fund.

Review the General Assembly Instructions before collecting items for the school kits.

Include the following items in each school kit:

Notebooks of wide- or college-ruled paper approximately 8" x 10 ½" totaling 150-200 sheets (if using 70-

sheet notebooks, please include three); no loose-leaf paper

One blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well)

One 30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other

One pencil sharpener

Six new, unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secure together with a rubber band

One eraser approximately 2 ½" long

12 sheets of construction paper in assorted colors (if necessary, fold in half to fit into the school kit bag)

One box of 16 or 24 crayons

One sturdy cloth bag approximately 12" X 14" with cloth handles or drawstring closure (see below for downloadable patterns)

Do not add other items or leave out any of the items listed. All items should be new and in good condition. Remove any excess packaging and pack items in the bag, fold the handles over, and secure with two large rubber bands or tie with yarn.
