Haskins Community Church News
January 2018
RULE OF LIFE
During worship the month of January, we will be
looking into ways that we can deepen our relationship
with God, hear his call for our life, and discern the ways
in which he wants us to live. We will begin with a
reflection on baptism and it’s importance, starting with
the remembrance of Jesus’ own baptism. This is an
excellent opportunity for those who have never been
baptized to consider taking this important step. I would
be happy to discuss this with anyone who might be
interested.
We then will spend a few weeks discussing
Spiritual Disciplines: What is their purpose, what are
some examples of Spiritual Disciplines, and how can
they help us not only prepare our hearts for the
upcoming Lenten Season, but open our lives for
continued service.
The last part of the month, we will explore the
concept of the “Personal Rule of Life.” We’ll begin
with a definition and explanation of this concept,
followed by perusing and considering the “Rule of Life”
designed by others. And we will end the month by each
of us constructing (if you so desire) a “Personal Rule of
Life” which I pray will be a practical and useful
document that you will also find inspiring and uplifting.
I pray God will open our hearts and minds to new
opportunities and experiences in 2018!

What we’re up to during Wednesday Bible Study
Bible study on Wednesdays at noon has covered the Book of Acts which
could also be called the Book of the Holy Spirit. The first study Acts
Chapter 1, focused on the ascension of Christ after His Resurrection
from the dead and His appearance to the apostles and others. Before He
ascended He promised they would receive the Power of the Holy Spirit.
Christ told them not to leave Jerusalem. As promised the Holy Spirit
came to the followers on Pentecost and from there the early church
began. The Spirit filled church existed in continuity with the old ways
but established a personal relationship with God (the veil was torn).
A new boldness overtook those filled with the Holy Spirit and
condemnation, threats and beatings from the Sanhedrin could not stop
these men from proclaiming the Life, Death and Resurrection of our
Lord and Savior.
My favorite reading so far begins in Chapter 6. There was a dispute in
the church because certain widows were not given a fair portion of what
was collected from the early church to help the less fortunate (the early
ministry for missions). Seven deacons were appointed to distribute the
resources so the apostles could continue to preach and witness about our
glorious Savior. These were the first deacons one of which was Stephen.
He is described as full of the Holy Spirit and through the Spirit’s power
began preaching with such authority of Old Testament and the
Resurrected Savior that the Sanhedrin became jealous and defensive.
False charges were brought against Stephen and he stood before the
assembly with the longest speech in Acts (Chapter 7). He spoke not to
save his life but to proclaim the glory of Jesus Christ who he accused the
Sanhedrin of killing. They became furious and carried Stephen outside
the city gates and stoned him. As he was dying he forgave his
persecutors and all who witnessed his trial and death saw, The Face of
an Angel. One in the crowd was Saul who after meeting Jesus on his
way to Damascus became Paul.
Gives me goosebumps seeing God’s perfect plan and ability to turn what
seems to be senseless violence into a part of His perfect plan. Can this
relate to the events in our world and in your life?
That’s what we’re doing Wednesday at noon beginning January 10th. I
invite you to join us.

Your gift of the prayer shawl came at a most “needed time.” Larry was in hospitals (x3) for almost 12 wks. Now is taking outpatient PT, OT and speech each week. God blessed us with so many “praying people.” We thank you for your love and prayer support. He is gaining strength each week and is only using a cane. The therapy has served him well. “Eating” is getting much better, as he hardly chokes or coughs now. He does get cold easily so Larry loves that blanket that was knitted together with love. Merry Christmas to all! Larry and Evelyn Canfield ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Thank you to Doug Futrell for donating a 12 foot ladder to the church. We appreciate it so much! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A huge thank you to all our faithful HCC members and friends who helped us reach yet another milestone on Facebook! With your help in sharing our HCC page with family and friends, we were able to reach 100 followers! Thank you so much for your help in getting HCC missions and activities out to our community and even farther. If you haven’t done it already, follow us on Facebook! And a special thank your to Jillian Green and Hayley Studer for maintaining our Facebook page! Your hard work and dedications are appreciated! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ \We want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you for your continued support of the missions and ministries of Impact With Hope. Your generous donation of $440.00 on 9/27/17 has helped to support the hurricane relief effort. Your ongoing support helps us continue to bring hope to children, families and communities around the world who are facing hunger, famine, major health crisis or whose lives have been shattered by disasters. Linda Greene President/CEO Impact for Hope ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sue and I would like to thank everyone who worked or donated to the Country Store. We had a lot of nice donations and a good variety. Proceeds of $457.00 were received and used for gift purchases for Crossroad Child & Family Services. Sue & Ruth _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Thanks to everyone who baked cookies and bought cookies at the cookie walk. We raised $270.00 to be used to purchase gifts for the children at Crossroad. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Our Christmas project of providing items from the Wish List for Crossroads Child & Family Services was a success! We received almost $850.00 to purchase items for the kids. With additional items donated by people in the community and thanks to the generosity of Meijer in Rossford, we were able to fill an entire large rolling bin of items for Crossroad. Thanks to those that helped me shop and deliver the gifts! Hayley Studer
