When news of a loved one?s death comes, we do not want to acknowledge i t as true.

If somebody points out a bad habi t we have that needs to be broken, we get

defensive and say they are wrong. If we do something we know is sinful we find

ways to rat ional ize why i t was alright to do after al l . Bad news makes us want to

shut down and pretend we did not hear i t or that i t did not happen.

In the Gospel story of the transfiguration, Moses and El i jah confronted Jesus wi th the bad news of his

impending suffering and death. Faced wi th such news, rather than shutt ing down, Jesus became radiant. His

wi l l ingness to see the pain that was ahead opened his eyes to see the glory that would be born from that very

pain. And i t l i teral ly showed on his face. Whi le al l this was going on, his apostles, Peter, James and John were

overcome wi th sleep. It is almost as i f the discussion of the most signi ficant yet painful t ime in Jesus? l i fe was

too much for them, so they shut down. It was only after they woke up that they were able to see the

magni ficence of God?s glory shining on the face of Jesus (Luke 9:28-36).

On the mountain top that day, Peter, James and John saw that facing into the pain leads to glory. Refusal to

shut down and run away or go to sleep in the midst of l i fe?s struggles and passages al lows the glory of God to

shine forth. What passages l ie ahead for us? Looking for a new job, deal ing wi th a fami ly confl ict, l iving

wi thout someone who died, gathering the courage to forgive or to ask for forgiveness, tak ing a stand on a moral

issue, l iving wi th a newly diagnosed i l lness, acknowledging an addict ion, opening our eyes to the real

sufferings of others in the world. Whatever i t is, we can shut down or face the pain. Jesus? transfiguration tel ls

us that the moment of facing the pain, as di fficult as i t may be, is the moment of glory.

On the mountain top that day, Jesus had not yet endured the profound suffering of his

passion and death. When he al lowed himself to face the di fficulty ahead, the glory of God

shone on him and his Father cal led him his beloved Son, his chosen one. If we face

whatever passage is ahead instead of shutt ing down, God wi l l say the same to us.

Cuando recibimos noticias de la muerte de un ser querido, no queremos aceptar

que sea verdad. Si alguien nos señala un mal hábi to que tenemos y lo deberíamos

dejar, nos ponemos a la defensiva y decimos que el los están equivocados. Si

cometemos un acto pecaminoso buscamos maneras de racional izarlo para que

aparente que no estábamos mal en hacerlo. Las malas noticias nos hacen querer

hacernos de oídos sordos y tratar aparentar que no ocurrió.

En el Evangel io, en la parábola sobre la transfiguración, Moisés y Elías

confrontaron a Jesús con las malas noticias de su inminente sufrimiento y

muerte. Enfrentado con tremenda noticia, en vez de encerrarse en sí mismo, Jesús se puso radiante. Su

voluntad de ver el dolor que se le aproximaba le abrió los ojos a ver la gloria que nacería de ese mismo dolor.

Y l i teralmente lo demostraba en su rostro. Mientras todo esto sucedía, sus apóstoles, Pedro, Santiago y Juan

estaban repletos de sueño. Es casi como si fuera demasiado para el los hablar sobre el momento más

signi ficante y aún más doloroso en la vida de Jesús y se hicieron de oídos sordos. Fue solamente después de

despertar que pudieron ver la magni tud de la gloria de Dios que radiaba sobre el rostro de Jesús (Lucas

9:28-36).

Ese día, en la cima de la montaña, Pedro, Santiago y Juan se dieron cuenta que al enfrentarse con el dolor

l legarían a la gloria. Al rechazar i rse a dormir o de encerrarse en sí mismos en medio de las luchas y

caminos de la vida permi ten que resplandezca la gloria de Dios. ¿Cuáles caminos tendremos por delante? La

búsqueda de un nuevo empleo, batal lando con un confl icto fami l iar, viviendo sin un ser que fal leció,

reuniendo el coraje para perdonar o pedi r perdón, tomar una posición sobre un asunto moral, viviendo con

una enfermedad recientemente diagnosticada, admit iendo una adicción, abriendo los ojos al sufrimiento

verdadero de otros en el mundo. Sea lo que sea, podemos hacernos de oídos sordos o enfrentar el dolor. La

transfiguración de Jesús nos dice que el momento de enfrentar el dolor, tan di fíci l como puede ser, es el

momento de gloria.

En la cima de la montaña ese día, Jesús aún no había padecido por el sufrimiento

profundo de su pasión y muerte. Cuando él se permi t ió enfrentar las di ficultades por

delante, la gloria de Dios bri l lo sobre él y su Padre lo l lamo su hi jo amado, su predi lecto.

Si enfrentamos cualquier travesía por delante en vez de hacernos de oídos sordos, Dios

nos di ría lo mismo a nosotros.
