Low Back Pain
• Chiropractors treat various forms of low back pain ranging from bio-
mechanical low back pain, lumbar neuritis, radicular leg pain as well
a lumbar related radiculopathies.
• Following an initial consultation and a thorough orthopedic
neurological examination, x-rays would be taken so that the doctor
would be able to determine any pathologies which exist and possibly
contraindicate adjusting procedures. X-rays would also show the
doctor the patients spinal alignment so that he or she could make
specific line of correction adjustments. Chiropractic x-rays are taken
seated or standing so that we can view the spine under gravitational
stress. Any previous diagnostic test and reports would be requested
to provide further information.
Chiropractic Spinal Adjustments Versus
Spinal Mobilization
• Chiropractic spinal adjustments are unique and
singular to the chiropractic profession. It is
characterized by a specific thrust applied to a vertebra
utilizing parts of the vertebra and contiguous
structures as levers to directionally correct articular
malposition. An adjustment is differentiated from
spinal mobilization in that the adjustment is applied to
a vertebral malposition with the intent to improve or
correct the subluxation, whereas any joint, subluxated
or not, may be manipulated to mobilize the joint
through its range of motion.
Chiropractic Related Therapy
• Most chiropractors utilize multiple types
of therapeutic aides which could include
electrical stimulation, ultrasound, laser
therapy, computerized spinal
decompression/traction, massage and
exercise rehabilitation programs.
Chiropractic Treatment of
Low Back Pain • The course of treatment would depend upon the
doctor's examination findings and diagnostic testing in correlation to the patients subjective complaints. Therapy might precede spinal adjustments to reduce pain, inflammation, hypertonicity as well as lower extremity restricted flexibility. Following therapy, specific line of correction adjustments are utilized in most cases. The purpose of the adjustment is to realign the vertebrae and spinal units so they may better react to the body's environment (gravity).
Chiropractic Referrals
• Does the Chiropractor do a thorough examination.
• Do they x-ray their patients to determine existing
pathology and spinal alignment prior to adjusting a
patient.
• Do they utilize therapeutic modalities.
• Do they have an exercise rehabilitation area to
increase strength, flexibility, endurance and balance.
• Do they prescribe home therapeutic exercises.
• Do they refer for diagnostic testing and medical
evaluations when needed in a timely manner.
