The OpportunityThe CEO at The Philanthropy Workshop will have the distinct and rare privilege of leading an organization centered at one of the most unique leverage points in the philanthropic ecosystem. TPW operates with unrivaled level and scope, creating and delivering effective program offerings and a philanthropic member network that spans the globe. Working in concert with the Board and staff, the CEO will partner with TPW members to guide them as they work to create systemic and transformative change as well as drive innovation through strategic philanthropy to address the most pressing issues of our time.

TPW’s success is amplified well beyond its programming because of its powerful platform, which brings together the intersection of philanthropy, social impact, and an engaged membership that sees the organization as a thought leader and partner, agent of change, and influencer. Serving as a sounding board, transformative leader, and a teacher, the CEO will directly support and work to catalyze this network of top philanthropists and impact investors to more effectively deliver lasting change.

TPW is built upon a foundation of established, effective education and networking programs for philanthropists. Partnering with the Board and staff, the CEO will bring vision and entrepreneurial grit in order to capitalize on avenues for expansion in a manner that balances appetite for innovation with the practicalities of growth. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO will lead an accomplished team in setting the future direction and strategy for the organization, with ultimate responsibility for its financial health, business development, and operational efficiency. With an eye towards maintaining a sustainable business model, the CEO will strengthen existing endeavors while also thinking boldly and innovatively about TPW’s future strategies.

Core responsibilities include ensuring that TPW is resourced with the staff, systems, and processes it needs for success. The CEO will oversee internal capacity building, leading the organization along a path of sustainable success that not only furthers its mission and impact, but allows staff to learn and grow as well. Leading TPW’s team across all three offices with emotional intelligence, transparency and a collaborative approach, the new CEO will set the tone for a culture that promotes and inspires creativity, learning, and innovation.

Strategy & OperationsTPW has a history of success and a strong reputation for quality programs that are relevant and impactful. Nevertheless, with an expanding international footprint and an evolving philanthropic ecosystem, the CEO will need to assess the current state of TPW’s offerings and begin to map out and evaluate new strategic opportunities that promote organizational sustainability and advance TPW’s capabilities to help its members and the philanthropic sector drive towards greater and more effective impact. This includes identifying key channels to expand organizational reach and impact.

The CEO will lead the process to develop the future course for TPW’s business and revenue models. By employ-ing sound business and financial acumen as well as understanding organizational priorities, the CEO will ensure the organization is supported with the systems and processes it needs to streamline operations in a complex, multi-national, and multi-cultural environment.

Program & Business DevelopmentLeveraging the immense knowledge and expertise of senior leadership, the CEO will support the design and delivery of high quality programming, facilitating and leading trainings where appropriate. Building trust and credibility with members is key to TPW’s theory of change. As such, the CEO will serve as a thought partner and peer to members, supporting their journey through TPW’s programs and making sure regular touchpoints are built into their experience with the organization.

The CEO will also be charged with leading business development initiatives, focusing on cultivating new member interest, building strategic partnerships, and representing the organization at conferences and through various media channels. Furthermore, this person will be the external face of the organization, raising the profile of TPW and establishing its place as a leader and thought partner to other key players in the philanthropic space.

Team LeadershipThe new CEO will continue developing TPW’s team, including creating and sustaining cultural and operational alignment across offices. A savviness and sophistication will be necessary to recognize and respect the inherent uniqueness of office locations that operate in the world’s largest philanthropic hubs – San Francisco, New York, and London. Additionally, as the organization develops a new strategic direction, the CEO will find and create opportunities for increased collaboration, engagement, and communication across offices.

The Philanthropy Workshop is seeking a dynamic, innovative, and entrepreneurial leader who will bring a strong combination of business, strategy, and financial skills to the role. Most importantly, the CEO will have a vision and passion for effective philanthropy and impact investing, and be able to successfully build upon the organization’s internationally-renowned reputation as a leader in the philanthropic field. The CEO will be adept at balancing a sustainable operation while also pursuing TPW’s ambitions for growth and innovation. The CEO must also be an effective ambassador by engaging and guiding high net worth individuals to support their philanthropic efforts to achieve meaningful change across a myriad of global issues.

This position requires a leader who can inspire and motivate. A successful track record of building organizations and teams through change and growth is necessary. The CEO must also be someone who can set a clear path forward and communicate that strategy effectively to diverse and multiple stakeholders. Knowing how to leverage the expertise of others and operate with a sense of honesty, humility, and transparency are essential characteristics.

An adaptive, confident, and engaging personality, the CEO will be politically astute and have a demonstrated background delivering impact. An insatiable intellectual curiosity for how the philanthropic sector is evolving will be helpful, as is an ability to actively listen and intuit themes and dynamics behind the words spoken.

The CEO will be a natural relationship builder and in a manner that establishes a peer-to-peer, high touch, personalized partnership with stakeholders. Candidates must possess the judgment and discretion required when working with and supporting high profile philanthropists. Exhibiting warmth, compassion, and a genuine desire to help in the humblest of ways is key. TPW and its members work on complex issues and will look for a CEO who can lead with the confidence to convey expertise and trust along with humor and grace.

A global mindset and international work experience is critical. Understanding the ways in which philanthropy varies across countries, regions, and cultures is important as the CEO will be expected to capitalize on opportunities and partnerships in both established and emerging markets with the sensitivity and sophistication needed to navigate these different contexts.

The search for a Chief Executive Officer is being assisted by a team from Waldron:

Candidates must have a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible leadership experience. A background in the social sector, most especially philanthropy or impact investing, is necessary, and significant experience in business, consulting, or with broader investing / capital markets will also be considered a benefit.

Experience as a key spokesperson for an organization and a demonstrated track record in sophisticated fund or business development activities is necessary. International work experience is required. Outstanding interpersonal and communications skills are essential since this position will be required to move seamlessly across a diverse and global network of constituencies. The CEO must be open to traveling domestically and internationally as needed.

This position is based in San Francisco, but New York and London may also be considered.
