Weather and Court Conditions !This is the time of year when the weather is the most unpredictable. That is why we try to keep you up to date on the clay courts and the repairs necessary to make them playable. Generally, when they freeze, it will take days before they are firm enough to play on safely. We will always do our best to have them ready for you as soon as possible. We are in need of mother natures help with warm weather, plenty of sunshine and no rain or snow. The hard courts are usable during this time, we ask that with just two courts, you sign up in advance on the reservation system and you limit your play time to an hour and a half to accommodate as many members as possible. Thank you for your patience during winter as it is our biggest challenge every year to keep your courts ready.

Member of the Month !!This month we are taking a step back, back in time to remember two tennis players that graced these courts for many years. This month starts a new year and we want to recognize Mrs. Julia Hudson and Mrs. Dora Taylor. They are both still a part of tennis, Ms. Dora with her grandson, Jack, and Ms. Julia with her great grandson, Hudson.

What a blessed gift they continue to give NBGCC as they have passed their love of the game onto another generation. Thank you Julia and Dora for passing down your tennis legacy to keep the game we all love alive and well in both of your families!

Tennis NewsJunior Member of the Month! With the New Year here, we want to

thank all our junior players for an awesome 2017. Each and every player has shown great success, and we’ve been fortunate to have an influx of new juniors that are eager to play. !This month’s junior members of the month are actually two players. When you see them play, their smiles never seem leave their faces. They always enjoy playing tennis and each bring their own style and flare to the tennis courts. They are the dynamic duo of tennis and our January junior members of the month: Markus Soreff and Reid Whitsett.

Junior After School Program

We will have the last class for 2017 on Thursday, December 19th for all three classes and we will pick it back up on Tuesday, January 9, 2018. If you have any questions please feel free to email either Hank or myself here at the shop.

!Directors Tip of the Month ! Who should your partner be? I get this question quite often and my answer is simple: you should be playing with someone who complements your game with their weaknesses being your strengths and their strengths being your weaknesses. This way you will be able to cover each other when it comes to what works or doesn’t work in your individual games. The goal in doubles for your partner and you should always be “how can I set my partner up to be successful”. So when you are playing doubles, find the partner that make you a winning combination!

Golf Course News

As we head in to a new year, I would like to wish everyone the best golfing year possible. I also wanted to inform everyone on what to expect regarding course conditions for 2018. !First and foremost, I would like to say “thank you” to our Board of Directors for all the support and commitment they made for the renovation in 2017. Also, thank you to every member of NBGCC for your patience and support for this project. To all of the staff of each department and to my maintenance team, I also extend thanks, for this project could not have happened without you. As we move into this season, you will see many of our small bumps and blips that are on the golf course grow in and level out. Our greens and approaches will become a bit more receptive to shots and mature into true playing surfaces. The sand traps have already started to improve and as the root system of the sod surrounding the bunkers develops into the soil, the bunker lines will become very well defined. We have begun to machine tamp and grade the sand traps on a weekly basis and they are leveling out well. All of the tees need a good aeration and a few topdressings so the teeing surfaces will match our collars and approaches. We can only do during the growing season. Fairways will be strong this year and while we have a mix and match of Bermuda fairways we did push the 419 to cover more and limited the common Bermuda in our 10x aeration process. Any weak areas are that of common Bermuda and is similar to what we had for collars and approaches before our upgrade. Mulch areas are serving to enhance the tree lines and allow us an area to blow and mulch debris while not damaging our dormant turf. It also serves to make cleanup of the property more efficient and allows the golf course to be kept in better shape. The playability and look of the mulch lines have become much more player friendly and visually appealing. Heading forward into our future, the golf course shall simply improve with each season. !Now to answer a few questions about the renovation. The 10th hole plays as a modern day short par 4, with its defense to par being in green design and from where you play your second shot. From 120 yards out from the green and on the left side of the fairway you can hit into a receptive green. As you get closer and/or to the right of the fairway, the approach shot becomes more difficult. A tee shot that is pin high, but to the right of the green leaves the most difficult approach and also has to navigate fairway bunkering. !Our 12th hole now plays longer than it did before. This was done to help make up for losing approximately 50 yards on number 9 when the Club added the parking lot. I was told it played somewhere around 206 to 210 yards as an uphill par three. Also, in classic golf course design of the early 1900’s, golf courses almost always had a par three that stretched to the limit of a players yardage to hit the ball. As our course was designed in 1920 and had a long par three 9th hole before, this was a way to restore that. !The 18th hole, while the most controversial during construction, is proving to be a great par 3 finishing hole. The green is 150 square feet smaller than the old number 18 and it plays about 12 yards shorter. So is it easier and less of a hole? My opinion is that it is a fantastic and challenging, but rewarding, par 3. !The sand traps on 17 and 18 are not designed to be easy up and downs or simple shots to save par. They are meant to be avoided at, almost, all cost. As you play these holes, you will find that they are quite a challenging finish to a great golf course. By modern standards, NBGCC is one of the shorter golf courses in the Carolina’s. It does, however, stand up to the modern game and equipment as the golf course management of your ball is at a premium. I believe that playing golf here and being a member of NBGCC gives you a great advantage when you play anywhere else. !The golf course will play firm when we are in periods of less rainfall and a bit softer during rain events. This allows for all players to hit multiple type shots into the greens. If you approach the greens from a high angle of attack, they will hold, and if you play a lower trajectory, then you will find a low run up game to be accommodating. The type of ball and your short game shot selection will determine many different ways to play a shot from the same location. Please talk with our golf pro, Alan Ferebee, in regard to perfecting these shots. !Thank you, Todd Holt
