HAPPY NEW YEARWelcome to our first newsletter of 2012. We hope you all have had a busy and joyful Christmas. We did, and we’ve got loads to tell you!

Firstly, we’d like to thank all of our learners and employers who were involved in our Ofsted inspection. It is great to hear that the quality of our delivery exceeds your expectations and you can clearly see the benefits our training has to offer.

In our last newsletter edition 4, we told you that we had successfully rolled out a National Apprenticeship programme for Pub & Brewer company – Greene King. We are pleased to inform you that we are now working with over 700 Greene King apprentices with plans to extend the programme to over 1300 further employees.

Plus, later this year, we will be reopening Mansfield’s ‘Town Mill’ Pub as a stylish brasserie, set to produce quality staff for the industry. As well as launching a brand new pre-employment programme.

2012 is guaranteed to be an exciting time for us as we continue to raise the standards of the hospitality industry even further.

With great delight, we can officially let you all know that Charnwood training has maintained its Grade 2 ‘Good’ status with Ofsted. It had been 4 years since our last inspection and due to the considerable changes the Charnwood team had experienced over the past 12 months; it was safe to say we were not surprised to hear from Ofsted.

Thanks to meticulous planning throughout the year and having such a great team, we were confident taking the inspectors on. And dare we say it, even a little excited!

However, little did we know that we were due to be inspected under the new Inspection framework…released just four weeks earlier!!!

The findings were phenomenal. Inspectors were ‘very impressed with the internal support and management of performance.’

Of particular merit was the way learners ‘enjoy their training,’ and statistics prove that ‘most go on to further training or gain promotion at work.’

Charnwood was applauded for ‘the support and care given to learners. This being a rare quality to be seen in a work based learning provider’ plus Inspectors commented that ‘training officers maintained strong relationships with Learners and showed a genuine passion for training.’

Apprentices of the future

Charnwood compared nationally

is ahead of the game

Keep a look out for the Charnwood apprentices, who are due to leave the Charnwood academy at the end of February.

Over the past nine months, we have seen these youngsters transform into confident, skilled hospitality workers. They have all worked extremely hard to achieve a Level 2 Diploma in Hospitality Services, and have delivered a fantastic service to our customers in that time.

We wish them the best of luck and will continue to support them in their Hospitality careers.

If you are interested in joining the academy team to learn new skills in catering or hospitality then contact us today on 0845 437 4000 and we’d be happy to discuss your training needs.

In a recent evaluation, General Managers for Spirit Group stated that their apprentices were ‘progressing well’ and ‘learning new skills has led to promotion and success’ for some individuals. The General Managers expressed that the Hospitality programmes Charnwood Training Officers are delivering, ‘exceed expectations’ and ‘business rewards can clearly be seen.’

Chris North, Business Development Manager for Spirit Pub Company said he has received some fantastic feedback from General Managers regarding the training.

Chris says, “Many were still under the perception that apprenticeships are just for young people. However a year on from the training programmes, General Managers feel alleviated from the pressures of training staff and ensuring competencies are to the highest of standards.”

Chris continues by saying that, “teamwork and confidence within the units has improved considerably and general consensus around the table is that this type of work based training is a ‘no brainer’.”

Our last edition celebrated 120 apprenticeship achievements and we continue to work closely with Spirit to support and train their staff.

Ever So Sensible Training with

We supported the successful ‘Ever So Sensible’ Group with staff training and development at our Catering and Hospitality academy, in preparation for a new menu.

Scott Whittaker, Marketing & Operations Director says “The academy has allowed Sam North, Executive Chef, to give one to one support and training in preparation for our new menu launch.”

“The footage we capture today will be used to train new and existing staff on mediums such as YouTube. Charnwood training has created the opportunity for employers to reduce staff training costs in both time and money whilst improving standards and raising the professionalism we all expect in today’s industry”.

Scott continues, “The experience has been extremely useful for Sam and his team and we look forward to working with the Charnwood academy in the future…”

Once refurbishment plans are complete, the Town Mill will reopen as a modern bar and kitchen offering a stylish Brasserie service. The venue will provide Charnwood with a real-work environment that will be ideal for any individual with aspirations for a career in hospitality.

Not only will this boost the Mansfield economy and drive the industry further, this brand new venue will be committed to

train and up-skill individuals in the art of hospitality; allowing students, young people and adults alike the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications and on the job training, with fantastic opportunities of sustained employment in local hospitality businesses and some of the UKs largest Pub Companies thereafter.

Opening times for the Town Mill will be confirmed in our Spring issue. If you would like further information about this exciting venture please contact us on 0845 437 4000 or [email protected]

History about the Town Mill

This 18th Century corn mill had been built up to the River Maun in approximately c.1775. The milling machines had originally been powered by the river to supply flour to the town’s bakers. The mill converted to textile production during the Industrial Revolution and was later transformed to a public house in c.1983.

Over the years the Pub became infamous throughout the town and provided the community with live music and entertainment. Residents later saw the closure of the pub and although an attempt to reopen the venue by a community interest consisting of former patrons later failed, the pub has retained its popularity and Charnwood has received great attention from its followers.

During the summer of 2011, Charnwood Partners, Steve & Jeremy purchased the Town Mill Pub, located in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire to continue Charnwood’s mission in ‘raising standards in the Hospitality industry.’
