Bosses go back to the floor

To celebrate and support National Apprenticeship week in February 2012, Charnwood’s Managing Partner, Jeremy Scorer joined forces with Greene Kings Operations Director Matt Brown and Karen Woodward, Divisional Apprenticeship Director for National Apprenticeship Service to go back to the floor as an Apprentice at the Hunters Moon pub in Birmingham.

The event was organised to raise awareness of Greene King’s Discovery Apprenticeship programme which offers individuals a chance to climb the career ladder in hospitality.

Charnwood are training over 700 hospitality and catering Apprentices across Greene Kings 2,400 pubs and restaurants. You can read more about this event in the news section on our website www.charnwood.co.uk

Charnwood have formed a firm partnership with JobCentre Plus and are running a series of Pre-Employment programmes across the East and West Midlands for the hospitality industry following another plummet in the UK’s unemployment figures and the recent announced plans by the Government to get people back into work.

The three week course is being offered to candidates who are not in any education, employment or training and are recommended by their JCP advisor to attend. On the course candidates receive essential knowledge and skills to allow them to start work in the hospitality industry.

All candidates are guaranteed work experience and a job interview with a prospective employer, although the outcome of any interview undertaken is entirely dependent on the candidate. Since the start of the programme, 50% of candidates have gained employment. See how Angela got on when she joined the Licensed Hospitality Work Academy programme on page 3.

WANT TO IMPROVE YOUR JOB PROSPECTS?Our tutors are highly qualified and have a wealth of experience in the catering and hospitality industry and are eager to help people get back to work.

So, if you are currently out of work and would like to gain new skills in catering and hospitality with a chance of employment at the end contact our advisors on 0845 437 4000 or email us at [email protected]

In association with

Spring is here at last! We hope you are all getting ready for the next few months ahead, with the Queens Jubilee and Olympic Games starting in July, they are set to be a busy few so now is the time to assess your staffing levels and training requirements.

If you are considering taking on a new member of staff or not sure how to be prepared for the UKs biggest hospitality event give us a call, we have experienced Training Officers who can give you professional advice and guidance.

Since our last newsletter, we have introduced a new Pre-Employment programme, where we offer unemployed people a three week programme to gain an awareness of the Licensed Hospitality industry before joining us on an Apprenticeship. So far, these programmes have been delivered for Greene King, Whitbread, Premier, Spirit Group and more local employers within the Nottinghamshire and Birmingham areas.

We continue to work closely with Spirit and Greene King - two of the country’s largest pub employers - to deliver innovative training solutions and have more recently began discussions with the infamous InterContinental Hotel Group and how to collectively make use of the new Government initiatives such as ‘Employer Ownership of Skills’ fund that allows large employers access to funding for teaching and learning.

As we now start the journey into the last four months of this year’s academic Government funded contract we will be busy visiting our learners across the UK and supporting our employers in identifying additional ways on how we can support their recruitment and training needs via funded Pre-Employment and Apprenticeships routes.

We hope that where ever you are in the UK you manage to escape the April showers and bag yourself some sunshine. For more details on how we can support all your training needs contact one of our Advisors on 0845 437 4000.

Gerwyn House, Managing Director

Alicia, 18, has been at the Academy since July 2011 and in that time has achieved a level 2 Apprenticeship in Hospitality Services and is part of a team running the restaurant and kitchen.

Alicia’s commitment to her Apprenticeship, and the academy has been excellent. So good in fact she is now involved in the creation of the academy menu.

Alicia says, “My confidence has grown so much. I never thought I would be comfortable in working with the general public and enjoy meeting new people each day, but I love it and thanks to all I’ve learnt on my Apprenticeship I don’t get shy any more!”

Angela was one of the first candidates to enroll onto the ‘Licensed Hospitality Work Academy‘ programme after she found herself in a difficult situation.

She had previously worked with young Offenders for the Nottingham County Council until the contract had ended and Angela was forced to apply for Job Seekers Allowance.

“The whole experience since losing my job has been very daunting. I have always been in full time work, able to support my family and always felt secure”

Angela was recommended for the course by her JCP Advisor, although she wasn’t exactly sure about going back in to the hospitality industry (an industry she had worked in more than 20 years ago) she decided to give it a go anyway.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed this course” says Angela “I’ve achieved four qualifications that I can now add to my C.V. and I’ve learnt new practical skills in barista.”

“My tutor was very good at recognising my skills and I was offered a receptionist position in the Charnwood Academy for my work placement.”

charnwood newsThere is still time to have your say

We would like to thank all our employers and learners who have contributed to the skills funding survey throughout the last few months.

The survey captures employer and learner perceptions on the quality of training we deliver and how responsive we have been to your needs over the past twelve months.

Once feedback has been collated, the Skills Funding Agency will publish a comparison report which identifies a score set against each Training Provider.

This will enable customers to make an informed judgment about Charnwood’s performance against other providers.

There is still time to have your say about Charnwood just call us on 0845 437 4000 or email us at [email protected] for more details.

Individuals who are aged over 24 years and begin an Apprenticeship at Level 3 or above from September 2013 will be required to apply for an FE loan. These loans will target qualifications that aim to improve employability and that offer the greatest personal benefits to an individual.

How much will I have to borrow? The costs will vary and are dependent on your chosen Training Provider. You may choose to fund the entire course independently or have alternative arrangements i.e. from an employer or personal investment.

How will the loan be paid? The Student Loans Company (SLC) will pay the Training Provider on your behalf and your will be expected to settle your repayments as directed by the SLC.

The loans have not yet been introduced into the Apprenticeship scheme and the Skills Funding Agency is currently looking at how the FE loan system will operate alongside the existing HE student support services.

Check out the next issue of Charnwood News for more information.
