SKYLINE DRIVE/BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY
Take Route 250 or I-64 west. Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkwaymeet at the top of a mountain pass (Rockfish Gap) west ofCharlottesville.
The Blue Ridge Parkway travels 217 miles through the Commonwealthof Virginia, allowing visitors to travel from its beginning at thesouthern end of the Shenandoah National Park to the North Carolina border. On the Parkway you will see such a
variety of countryside, dipping from ridge top to valley floor and from thereproceeding through pastoral rolling farmland. Azalea ParkPark hours are 6AM to 9PM.Azalea Park consists of 23 acres of level land located off Old Lynchburg Road at the southern edge of theCity near Interstate 64. The City secured the land in two acquisitions from the Bellmead Corporation in1965. On the north side of the property are trees and natural buffers which separate the park fromneighborhood homes. On the south side is Moore's Creek, which adds to Azalea's unusual charm as itwinds its way along the entire length of the park. There are two paved parking areas and recreationalfacilities include Junior League softball field, a concession stand, basketball courts, swing sets, and
playground. There is a stepping stone ford to the Rivanna Trail system at the south end of the communitygardens. There are 2.5 acres of garden plots which are rented to area residents. For information on rentinga plot, call (434) 970-3592. A fenced-in area is provided for off-leash dog activities. Dogs must remainunder voice control. Dog owners need to clean up after their dogs; a plastic bag dispenser is provided forcleaning up dog waste.
Fifeville ParkPark hours are 6AM to 9PMFifeville Park is a neighborhood park of only 0.66 acres located within Grove Street, Spring Streetand King Street. The land for the park was a gift of H.W. Walsh and five other trustees who in
1949 formally set it aside for the residents of the Fifeville District. The fenced-in park land risesabove the surrounding streets and contains a basketball court, a shelter and playground. Dogs areallowed off-leash but must remain under voice control. Zone 7 Permit Parking is available on thestreet.
Greenleaf ParkPark hours are 6AM to 9PMGreenleaf Park consists of 14 acres of grassy hillsides with hardwood and evergreen treesin a fenced-in area. It is located on Rose Hill Drive at Greenleaf Lane and off-streetparking is provided. The land was part of McIntire Park until the construction of Route250 Bypass cut it off from the rest of the park. At that time it became a neighborhoodpark with its own identity. Greenleaf offers a playground area, summertime spray shower, a picnic shelterwith restrooms, and a half-basketball court. An Interpretive Trail Guide is available at the brochure box to
help you identify trees. Dogs are allowed off-leash but must remain under voice control.
Lee ParkLee Park contains all of the land bounded by Jefferson Street, First Street N.E., Market Street and SecondStreet N.E. The land was donated to the City by Paul Goodloe McIntire in memory of his parents in 1917to be used as a public park. Dominating the park at its highest point stands an imposing equestrianmonument to Robert E. Lee. The statue was conceived by Henry M. Shrady, completed by Leo Lentelli,and presented by Mr. McIntire to the City in 1924. The 1.04 acres of raised land provides a pleasant

lunchtime oasis in the downtown area, with many benches, a number of checker/chess tables, and colorfulflowers and shrubbery. Lee Park, as well as Jackson Park, are part of the Virginia Civil War Trails. Bothparks also host the annual Governor Jefferson's Thanksgiving Festival with Revolutionary era re-enactments and displays.
Meade ParkThe park is open 6AM to 9PMMeade Park is located at the corner of Meade Avenue and Chesapeake Street and is 5.2 acres in size.Meade is best known for Onesty Swimming Pool. The pool beautifully overlooks a stream dotted withweeping willows. The pool opened to the public in 1975 and is named in honor of Louis A. Onesty, knownas the "Father of Swimming" in Charlottesville for his selfless dedication to the City's youth swimmingprograms. The complex includes a large lighted outdoor pool, wading pool, showers, restrooms and lockerfacilities. The park also has a playground, basketball court, a non-official softball field and a picnic shelter.Dogs are allowed off-leash but must remain under voice control. Off-street parking is provided.
Pen ParkPen Park, which borders East Rio Road, is often referred to as the "gem" of the Citypark system. Pen Park is the largest park in the City and it is from this park that ParkStreet takes its name. Although it is a relatively young recreational area, the parkoffers excellent leisure facilities. This area of land has kept its name for more than 200years; by 1979 the city acquired the last of the park's 280 acres. In addition to sweepingvistas of mountains and open rolling land in all directions, the park offers recreational
opportunities for all ages. There are 8 tennis courts, a Little League baseball field, batting cage, volleyballcourt, 3 outdoor picnic shelters, and a playground for children. There is the 9-hole Meadowcreek GolfCourse with clubhouse and pro shop and an outdoor physical fitness course with 20 exercise stationswinding through the natural setting toward the Rivanna River and back. This course has been adapted forthe blind and handicapped, as well as non-handicapped individuals of all ages to use. Dogs are allowedbut only on-leash in the park (and are not allowed on the golf course). City code requires dog owners toclean up after their dogs; a dispenser/receptacle of plastic bags for cleaning up dog waste is available at thestart of the Fitness Trail
Rives ParkThe park is open 6AM to 9PMRives Park is a neighborhood park, 4.3 acres in size, consisting of flat open space with a view of Carter'sMountain in the distance. It is located on Rives Street between Monticello and Florence Roads, nearQuarry Park. Featured here are a half basketball court, a softball field, a shelter and playground equipment.Dogs are allowed off-leash but must remain under voice control. Off-street parking is available.
Tonsler ParkThe park is open 6AM to 11PM.Tonsler Park is one of the busiest parks in Charlottesville. Its location on Cherry Avenue at 5th Street S.W.is in close vicinity to the neighborhood supermarket and other commercial establishments, which makes it a
popular place to congregate. Small children, teenagers and families gather to enjoy the recreation center,tennis courts, life-size chess board, lighted basketball courts, softball/soccer fields, large sprinkler showerand extensive playground equipment. Originally acquired in 1946, by 1978 the park was expanded to itspresent size of 7.4 acres. The park is named after Benjamin Tonsler, a local educator during segregation.Dogs are allowed off-leash but must remain under voice control. Off-street parking is
provided by the tennis courts and in front of the recreation center.
Bailey Mini-ParkBailey Mini-Park is a small, quaint landscaped area located at the corner of U.S. 250 Bypass

and Hillcrest Road. A park bench and tall trees offers a shady location for lunch to those within walkingdistance of the park. The 0.33 acres of land were given to the city by Jon Bailey in 1979 to be used as apark dedicated to the memory of his parents, Annie Mae and Tilly Bailey. There is no adjacent parkingavailable but there is limited on-street parking in the neighborhood.
Forest Hills Park
The park is open 6AM to 9PMLofty oak trees and a magnificent view of Carter's Mountain highlight the 7.35 acres of rolling land whichmake up this popular park, which was originally known as Forest Park. Located on Forest Hills Avenue,the City acquired the property from J. Hubert and Dorothy Carver in 1955. Today there are extensivelydeveloped activity areas for individuals of all ages. A Little League baseball field and a concession standlie at the lowest end of the site near the paved parking area. On the hillside slopes nearby are a number ofpicnic facilities, including a picnic shelter and outdoor grills. On the promontory ridge is an abundance ofplayground equipment, including slides, swing sets, a merry-go-round, animal rockers, and a horseshoe pit.At the head of the valley is a large flat area containing two full basketball courts and two wading pools witha swing set. Dogs are allowed off-leash but must remain under voice control.
Jackson ParkPark hours are 6AM to 9PM
Jackson Park consists of 0.4 acres and includes all of the property bordered by Jefferson Street,Fourth Street N.E., High Street and the Albemarle County Court Building. This property, onceknown as "McKee's Row", was deeded to the City by Paul Goodloe McIntire in 1919 to be used asa park. A narrow lane which once ran between the County Court Building and the park propertywas called McKee's Lane. A large equestrian monument of Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall"Jackson, by Charles Keck, is the focal point of the park. The monument was presented by Mr.McIntire as a gift to the city in 1921 and is ranked as one of the three best equestrian statues in theworld. The park also contains well-maintained flower beds and a number of benches. JacksonPark, as well as Lee Park, are part of the Virginia Civil War Trails. McGuffey ParkThe park is open 6AM to 9PMThis delightful little park of 1.1 acres sits atop a hill next to the McGuffey Art Center at Second StreetN.W. and Jefferson Street. In 1945, this land was donated by the City to the Charlottesville School Board;in 1974, the School Board gave the land and adjoining school back to the city as a gift to become the
McGuffey Art Center and to form McGuffey Park. Park facilities include half-courtbasketball, playground and benches. Dogs must be kept on leash. Parking is available onthe street.
MeadowcreekOriginally acquired in 1963 as a park, Meadowcreek has since evolved into a set of 73community garden plots where residents can rent space to grow flowers and vegetables.The remainder of the 20 acre park has been left undeveloped. The gardens are located off
Morton Drive near the intersection of Emmet Street and U.S. 250 Bypass behind the English Inn. Meadow
Creek meanders through the woods along the entire southeastern portion of the park. For information on

Quarry ParkThe Park is open 6AM to 9PM.The 9.1 acre Quarry Park is located off of Monticello Avenue/Route 20 South on Quarry Road at thesouthern edge of the city. Two Little League baseball fields, a concession stand with restrooms and twosoccer fields comprise the recreational amenities. Off-street parking is also provided. Rothwell ParkThe smallest park in Charlottesville at only 0.1 acre, Rothwell Park is located at the corner ofNinth and East Market Streets, next to the Downtown Recreation Center. The property is
comprised of three acquisitions made by the City from various owners between 1960 and 1971.The City built the park with the assistance of the Blue Ridge Home Builders Association as amemorial to Mr. Stuart Rothwell. In the center stands an historic water trough, one of four theCity installed during the latter half of the 1800s. This particular ornamental trough originallystood at the south end of Belmont Bridge and was designed to provide water for horses and dogsas well as for people.
Washington ParkThe park is open 6AM to 9PMWashington Park contains only 9.25 acres but remains one of the most heavily used parks with a multitudeof facilities for individuals of all ages. It contains 3 lighted basketball courts, a lighted outdoor pool with awading area and bath house, a recreation building with restrooms and a playground area. The sloping landdrops suddenly and spectacularly to a level plain far below where a regulation softball field, a basketball
court and a multi-use field are located. The land was deeded to the City in 1926 by Paul Goodloe McIntireto be used as a public park and playground. The new playground and picnic shelter were given to the Cityby the Dave Matthews Band. The drainage, seeding and grading for the third phase of the WashingtonPark renovations were funded by a generous grant by the Perry Foundation. Dogs are allowed off-leash butmust remain under voice control. Dog owners are required by city code to clean up after their dogs; aplastic bag dispenser is provided for cleaning up dog waste. There are parking lots at both upper and lowerlevels.
Belmont ParkPark hours are 6AM to 9PM.One of the finest neighborhood parks in the City, Belmont Park is bounded by Stonehenge Avenue, RialtoStreet and Druid Avenue. The 3.1 acres of land were bought by Paul Goodloe McIntire in 1921 and hetransferred the property to the City to be used as a park and playground for local citizens. The park
contains a full basketball court, benches, swing set and slides, large shady oak trees and acourtyard with shelter for outdoor concerts such as the Annual Belmont Bash. Dogs are
allowed off-leash but must remain under voice control. Parking is available on the street.
Greenbrier ParkThe park is open 6AM to 9PMGreenbrier Park consists of 28.3 acres of undeveloped area located in the Greenbrierneighborhood with walking/biking trails along Meadow Creek. Enjoy the view ofsycamore groves, a meadow and Greenbrier Marsh, believed to be one of only two suchnatural marshes in the Virginia Piedmont region. A footbridge spans the creek; many neighborhood schoolchildren use this footbridge to walk to Greenbrier School. Greenbrier Park was deeded to the City by theGreenbrier Corporation in 1965. The park is part of the Rivanna Trail system, a set of trails in and aroundthe city maintained by the non-profit Rivanna Trails Foundation. Dogs are allowed off-leash but must

McIntire ParkPark hours are 6AM to 10PMMcIntire Park contains land originally donated by Paul Goodloe McIntire and continues to be one of themost popular parks in the City. Located off of U.S. Route 250 Bypass, it features rolling land withmagnificent views of the mountains to the east, a heavily wooded area with steep and varied topographyand winding streams. There is a major community focus on the lighted softball fields, baseball field, and
the three shelters which are used extensively from spring to fall. In April every year McIntire Park hoststhe carnival for the Annual Dogwood Festival. In the southeastern half of the park, to the east of therailroad tracks, lies a nine-hole sand green golf course. This section of the park has its own parking lot andoffers a playground and wading pool. McIntire park was originally larger than its current size. Theconstruction of the bypass ran through the park, with one section becoming what is now Greenleaf Park.Another section, at the northeast end of McIntire Road near the rescue squad, initially became tennis courtsand more recently has been converted into a skateboard park. Dogs are allowed off-leash in the park (butnot the golf course) and must remain under voice control. There are separate entrances to the three major
parts and parking is available at each.
Northeast ParkThe Park is open 6AM to 9PM.Northeast Park is a 4.8 acre neighborhood park acquired in 1975 and is located at the corner of Sheridan
Avenue and Calhoun Street. There is a full basketball court and playground facilities. A footbridgeconnects the park to Marshall Street. A grill and picnic table are available. Dogs are allowed off-leash butmust remain under voice control. Parking is available on the street.
Riverview ParkThe park is open 6AM to 9PM.Riverview Park is located at the end of Chesapeake Street at the eastern city limits and consists of 26.6acres bordering the river. This land was donated by Riverview Cemetery in 1974 for use as public spaceand by 1989 it was renovated into a park. With a large paved parking area, kiosk, playground, grill, twobenches and an open field, this park is ideal for picnickers and families. The adjacent Rivanna Greenbelt
trail provides opportunities for walking, jogging, bicycling, fishing or simplyobserving wildlife Dogs are allowed off-leash at this park provided that they remainunder voice control. City code requires owners to clean up after their pets! A
dispenser/waste receptacle near the kiosk provides dog owners with plastic wasteremoval bags for this purpose.
Rivanna GreenbeltThe Rivanna Greenbelt is a handicapped-accessible paved trail that starts at RiverviewPark and meanders north about 1.25 miles to Free Bridge / Route 250 East (at the baseof Pantops) along the Rivanna river. The Greenbelt is actually a public right-of-way
across private property but it is maintained by Parks and Grounds; please respect the adjacent privateproperty by staying on the trail. The Greenbelt is also part of the Rivanna Trail, a pedestrian trail systemthat encircles the City and which is maintained by a private non-profit foundation.
Starr Hill Park
The park is open 6AM to 9PM.A small neighborhood park of only 0.4 acres, Starr Hill Park is located at the corner of 7th Street N.W. andElsom Street. Acquired in 1980, it previously featured playground equipment, but currently it is an openfield. There is limited public parking nearby. Dogs must be kept on-leash.

SCHOOLS
While Charlottesville is home to the nationally acclaimed University of Virginia, the areaoffers a variety of schools that maintain the area's tradition of excellence.
The city offers seven elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Thecounty schools provide 15 more elementary schools, five more middle schools, and three
more high schools. The city and county school systems operate independently of eachother and enroll over 15,000 students.
With 22 private schools to choose from, parents who want to send their children toprivate schools have a plethora of options. Secular and non-secular private schoolsaccommodate students of all ages. The area also has schools for challenged students withspecial needs.
Local students can continue their educations at Piedmont Virginia Community Collegeand the University of Virginia, both of which blend quality educations and convenience.Piedmont Virginia Community College offers general education, college preparatory
programs, and continuing education. The school, which is in its 26th year of service,enrolls about 7000 students every year. Each of these students have the option of gettinginvolved with the local business community through worker-training and re-trainingprograms.
The University of Virginia, one of the top institutions for higher education in the nation,is another option for higher education in the area. Enrolling over 12,000 undergraduate,graduate, and professional students each year, the school blends the energy of a largeuniversity with the intimacy of strong faculty-student relations. The faculty has wonawards for research in fields like the environment, medicine, education, and nursing.With seven libraries and several top-ranking professional schools, the University of
Virginia lives up to the standards of its founder, Thomas Jefferson.
