Exercise 2: Nostradamus Magazine
Instructions:Imagine it is 2023. As you are buying groceries, you notice on the magazine rack (yes, there are still magazines) the latest copy of Nostradamus, which has recently become your favourite read. You are even more interested when you realize that the cover of the magazine is almost completely dedicated to your organization.
1. ON YOUR OWN, spend about 5 minutes writing on sticky notes (one idea per note) what you envision the various elements of the magazine cover to look like. What’s the cover story? The quotes? The sidebars? The feature articles? The subject of the cover photo?
You may want to consider the following questions as you do #2 above:a) How do we work with our clients and partners in 2023? b) What do people say about us in 2023?c) How did we handle good times and challenging times to get to where we are in 2023?d) What has happened in the community as a result of our work?
2. AS A GROUP, each person sticks their notes on (or near - space permitting) the appropriate spots on the large layout page of the magazine cover.
3. AS A GROUP, discuss the various cover stories and see if you can reach consensus on what one cover story you would all envision for your organization. If not, leave them all on the page. Some may become features or cover stories for future issues.
4. AS A GROUP, discuss your finished product.

Exercise 4: Digging Deeper
Your VisionConsidering your organization’s vision and its proximity to that vision at this point in time, what are some small steps (goals) that need to be taken to move from where you are toward that vision?
10 Changing Times, Inspiring LibrariesParticipant Workbook
Exercise 4: Digging Deeper
Your Community PartnersAre there any other organizations in your community (geographic or virtual) that might have a complementary vision or complementary goals within it? How would you find out? (maybe they are here today...)
Your ResourcesAre there resources that you have to offer that could match the needs of another organization? How about vice-versa?
11 Changing Times, Inspiring LibrariesParticipant Workbook
Exercise 4: Digging Deeper
Gathering StrengthWhat are some (3 or 4) questions you could ask publicly that might make another organization see you as a potential innovative partner? (e.g. “How will we better serve the needs of a population that desires more information for a more DIY world?” or “How do we see our infrastructure needs changing over the next few years?)
12 Changing Times, Inspiring LibrariesParticipant Workbook
Exercise 4: Digging Deeper
Collabo-vatingWhat innovations are you planning that are sustaining? Disruptive? Re-inventive?
How would you invite another organization to share in some innovative thinking with you?

Exercise 4: Digging Deeper
Getting Past ChallengesWhat are some of the barriers and/or pitfalls involved if you tried to work with another organization in the way you are envisioning? (Barriers might include labour contracts, restrictive rules or policies, safety concerns, privacy issues, etc. Pitfalls might include unsustainable workload, confused clients, loss of identity, etc.)
14 Changing Times, Inspiring LibrariesParticipant Workbook
Exercise 4: Digging Deeper
Take it for a Test-driveIf another organization is here today that you would like to explore the idea of working with, join them at a table and share some of these thoughts and/or your vision magazine cover.
If someone who represents a similar organization or position is here, try your thoughts out on them.
If you don’t know if the right person is in the room, ask a workshop assistant, and we’ll try and find the person you need.
