PROJECT PRESENTATION ANDINVITATION TO PARTICIPATION

How do young people understand and value the waterecosystem?

How can they research, discover and follow the relation-ship and connection of water ecosystems to the:

… global water circulation?

… balance of climatic and weather phenomena?

… shaping and preservation of natural and cultural landscapes?

… life of all animal and plant species?

… provision of quality drinking water and food?

… recreational possibilities?

… development of numerous activities?

These are the questions we have been asking ourselves for generations. In the 2013/14

school year we will try to nd answers to them under the “WATER CONNECTS” proj-ect, which continues the theme of the already traditional international project BMW CleanWater Regatta. It is dedicated to studying, researching and searching for solutions to main-

tain and improve the state of different water ecosystems. The Eco-School programme will

also be involved in the project as a partner, while the international environmental organisation

WWF (World Wildlife Fund) will be involved in the project as the partner for professional andsubstantive support.

WITH THIS PROJECT WE WISH TO ACHIEVE THE FOLLOWING GOALS ON A LOCAL

AND INTERNATIONAL LEVEL:

- emphasise the meaning of protecting and improving the quality of different eco-

systems, as well as the animal and plant species and habitats connected with them;

- recognise the interwovenness and substantive connection of all parties involved

in the project, regardless of level: business, sports/recreational or environmental, they

are linked together by a common denominator – WATER;

- provide schools with the opportunity to exchange knowledge, opinions and ex-perience, as well as spread the cooperation between schools on an interna-

tional level.

seven European countries: Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slo-

vakia and Slovenia, will be invited to participate on an international level.

Approximately 30 schools from each country will participate, among which 5schools with the best project will be selected. The authors of the winning project

To schools that will participate in the “WATER CONNECTS” project we offer cooperationon an international level, which means that we will provide:

→ establishment of contacts and international integration of schools from the participating

European countries, and

→ their recognisability in the great European family of schools that treat water ecosystems

sustainably and responsibly;

For future project support we will:

  - provide working materials for the mentors,- organise interactive workshops, at which we will present the project concept in detail

and show additional activities for the implementation of the project, e.g. eld work.

THE OPPORTUNITYFOR SCHOOLS AND MENTORS

You can connect your activities under the “WATER CONNECTS” project to your ex-

isting projects on the subject of water or upgrade your ordinary educational programme.

The products can be the result of team or individual work. Encourage team work as it will

make it easier to create original suggestions and search for creative approaches in solving

the environmental issues. The products should be appealing to the visitors of the stands

at the event.

A possible starting point: IN WHAT WAY DOES WATER INFLUENCE LIFE IN OURSURROUNDINGS?

The basic purpose of the “Water Connects” project is to actively include young people to

research and become familiar with the water ecosystem, enhance the awareness of the

meaning of water, and encourage young people to prepare solutions and suggestions that

will help to improve the state and quality of water. With this project we wish to improve the

quality of the gained knowledge and make the learning process more interesting.

We from the Eco-Schools of Slovenia wish to provide an example in this eld to otherschools and other public institutions in the countries where this project is being imple-

mented.

In the workshop we will provide information on the state of the water ecosystems in the

region. We will present some possibilities for creativity and research. We will give you a

few recommendations on how to act in case of lack of knowledge, experience or ideas

(through the assistance of the project leader, personal visits or consultations via e-mail or

by phone). The attendance of teachers at the workshop, where you will be given all infor-

mation about the project, is not obligatory but is highly recommended.

The workshop will take place in February. The exact date will be announced subsequently.
