Celebrating 150 years of changing lives
Last year, to commemorate our 150th anniversary, we paid tribute to our past Presidents, highlighting the key leadership roles they played in securing the future of our community.
This year we decided to mark the end of our 150th year by recognizing the multitude of partnerships that we have forged throughout the years, relationships that have enabled us to accomplish so much together to change people’s lives.
At Ometz we recognize the strength of partnerships; we acknowledge that our agency, on its own, cannot be everything to everyone. To serve our clients most effectively and meaningfully, we must continuously forge links with others. We have worked hard at relationship-building, forming alliances and establishing new collaborations.
We have developed significant partnerships with volunteers, individual donors, government agencies, private foundations, public and private institutions and other community agencies. And we have had an impact on thousands of lives!
We are proud of our longstanding collaborations with a number of partners who continue to exhibit their ongoing trust in us. This past year, we are pleased to have attracted the following new partnerships:
• La Fondation Jasmin Roy – with whom we developed a toolkit for schools and educators to address the escalating problem of bullying.
• L’Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF) – who funded the development and implementation of our comprehensive financial literacy program, “Money Matters.”
• The Association of Jewish Family & Child Agencies and the International Association of Jewish Vocational Services – we are a member of both associations and we hosted their joint conference in Montreal this past spring.
• The Silhouettes® – a troupe of young performers, aged 6 -22, who danced their way into our hearts at our annual gala, and helped us raise $385,000 for programs for our young people at risk. Many of the troupe’s members have struggled with physical, mental and other life challenges, and their message of hope and inspiration is beautifully connected with Ometz’s daily mission. In a sense, it’s youth helping youth.
We believe that we should all be proud of the work that we have accomplished together. We want to express our sincere gratitude for your partnership with us in what has been to date a great adventure.
B’Shalom,
Together, we touched more than 13,000 lives

Together, we work tirelessly to deliver efficient, effective and innovative services to our clients. Over the past 12 months,
• Our Financial Support Services spearheaded new ways of working with clients in the area of financial capacity-building through “Money Matters”, an initiative sponsored by the Autorités des marchés financiers (“AMF”). Seniors, new immigrants, youth, and low-income earners were educated and empowered to make informed and effective financial choices.
• Our Mental Health Support Services offered new and innovative social integration initiatives including “Mindfulness and Mediation”, “Wellness and Recovery”, and “Rehearsal for Life” which uses role play techniques to equip clients to better deal with intense emotions and interpersonal conflict.
• Our Volunteer Services launched a new after-school homework program for students in Grades 7, 8 and 9 to help kids stay focused and organized in their first high school years.
• Our Immigration Services embarked upon an exciting new partnership with the YM-YWHA to provide a wider array of integration activities for newcomers to connect with members of the Montreal Jewish community. Activities will include outings, language courses, conversation clubs, and events for families, children and young adults.
• Our Ometz Family Counselling Centre received a long-term commitment to establish the Donald Berman Family Play Therapy Program. With this financial support, Ometz will be able to continue to deliver quality services and innovative programs to the community.
• Our Employment Services secured grants for two new programs to help our most vulnerable clients break out of the cycle of poverty: the “Pathways” program offers vulnerable young adults internships to develop valuable work experience. Our second program, which consists of a 3-month internship for mature workers and immigrants, provides individuals with an opportunity to re-enter the workforce.
• Our ProMontreal Entrepreneurs (PME) program partnered with the Centre Locale de Dévéloppement in Ville Saint-Laurent to offer a new entrepreneurship workshop series to aspiring business owners. PME took part in the judging process of the Quebec Entrepreneurship Contest, and sponsored a prize in the contest. Through our PME Fund, 4 new entrepreneurs received financing for their start-ups.
• Our Training Services rolled out its online Resume Writing program, and quickly garnered accolades from subscribers from McGill and Concordia Universities. In collaboration with the international Gateway to Careers initiative, Ometz launched “The Montreal Job Search Guide”, an online career portal with innovative tools and tutorials for jobseekers.
• Our School Services launched a new initiative in which parents joined their children, participating in our after-school program, for dinner with the program’s staff and volunteers. In conjunction with the Fondation Jasmin Roy and David Roger Gagnon, Ometz created and published the “Toolkit on Prevention of Bullying and Violence in Schools” which is now available to schools across Quebec in English and in French.

John:“When a newly-referred client does not recognize his need for help and perceives all his problems as external while heading for a crisis, I can only hope to keep providing outreach until the opportunity presents itself to provide instrumental help and win the client’s trust. What we at Ometz hope for, as it has in Corey’s case, is that the client then becomes receptive to more clinical support and preventive work by gaining his trust.”
Corey:“I suddenly found myself having to live on my own, without a job, and no money except for a small inheritance. Thanks to Ometz, my needs were properly assessed, and my worker, John, got me access to full disability welfare. John helped me enter a part-time work program. A year later I was able to afford a better apartment, and I was promoted from helper to kitchen supervisor. I’m still working there for now, and my goal is to find a full-time job as a chef.”
Together,
we inspire hope
Lisa:“Nathan was referred to the Small Steps Day Camp after attending therapy in the school setting. Through our collaboration at Ometz with the YM-YWHA, Nathan was able to benefit from individual speech and language therapy sessions 2-3 times a week, while still benefitting socially and culturally from a true day camp experience. This intensive therapy situation allowed him to progress and maintain a variety of new skills, which would have otherwise been lost over the summer.”
Nathan’s Mom:“Small Steps made a significant and noticeable difference in my son’s ability to communicate. I like to refer to that experience as the turning point in my son’s development. Thank you, Ometz, for this incredible and wonderful program.”

Yael:“In November 2012, Paula finally decided to leave her husband after a long history of conjugal violence. With nowhere to go and no money, Paula arrived at Ometz. Consumed with panic and fright, Paula seemed lost and confused. With the support of Ometz and partners in the community, she has developed more skills to deal with life’s challenges and has gained more self-confidence. She is the true definition of a survivor. I am so proud of her and know she has a bright future ahead of her.”
Paula:“After a very bad wake-up call since coming to Montreal and dealing with a lot of bad things I never thought I’d have to go through, I turned to Ometz. I’m really thankful because honestly I don’t know what I would have done if Ometz hadn’t been here. In my moment of need, my worker, Yael, took the time to help me plan everything in order to get my life back on track. Today, I still have new challenges, but I know that I can count on Ometz. Every day I’m thankful that I belong to this community.”

Katherine:“At ProMontreal Entrepreneurs, we believe and invest in our youth’s infinite potential. Raphael embodies this ethos.”
Raphael: “In 2010, I was a freshly minted ex-academic faced with a problem. I had such a disparate set of experiences and skills, and I was qualified for many tasks but seemingly specialized for none. I set off for Ometz to try to resolve my situation. My worker, Elena, helped me rework my resumé and ultimately assisted me in finding a job at a clean energy venture capital firm. After two and a half years at the firm, I decided to move on. I again turned to Ometz, this time to the ProMontreal Entrepreneurs Fund managed by Katherine. We submitted our business plan for a clean energy organization, and two weeks later, we were awarded $40,000! We have found PME to be one of the most valuable resources behind our company.”
Elena: “Our job is to equip our clients not with self-delusion and blind hope, but with knowledge and a plan. I have been privileged to guide and mentor Raphael on his transformational voyage to set, align and implement his career aspirations. His openness, engagement, willingness to venture into ideas, eagerness to work together toward a common vision, and his contagious sense of humor were critical to his success.”

talent soar
The third edition of our annual gala, A Chance to Shine, was a wonderful success raising $385,000. Held on April 8 at Place des Arts, the more than 1,000 guests in attendance rose to their feet in applause after a first-ever Canadian performance by THE SILHOUETTES® dance troupe from NBC’s America’s Got Talent®. All proceeds from A Chance to Shine will help Ometz continue to deliver social services to hundreds of vulnerable children and youth in Montreal. A Chance to Shine benefitted from the generous patronage of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Black for a third consecutive year, and from the dedication and energy of event chair Mrs. Ruth Bensimon Choueke.
