Please Pray for... people throughout our
world working to highlight the devastating effects of climate change
people throughout Australia and the rest of the world who are homeless and struggling to survive
much needed rainfall in the many drought-stricken areas throughout Australia
those members of our community who are grieving the loss of a loved one.
Praise and Thanks for…
the freedom we experience in our country – freedom to vote, freedom to protest, freedom to practise our religion and freedom to live in safety
the generosity of individuals and families in our community who are donating what they can to our Christmas Appeal
people who act, even in small ways, so that future generations may enjoy our planet.
Good News Kath Hore - Mission & RE Support Officer
If you have any requests for either of the above prayers, please leave your request at the Office.
Marist Fathers’ Farewell The Marist Fathers’ Farewell celebrations are planned for the weekend of 23 & 24 November. If you are interested in attending the Dinner Function, the invitation can be accessed from the Parish Website: www.sosgladstone.org.au
The Farewell Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Michael on Sunday 24 November in the Marian Centre at Chanel College commencing at 9.00 am and followed by Morning Tea in Lavalla Court. All are welcome.
Prayer for Rain Please consider praying the prayer below as we ask God to send much-needed rain to the parched lands throughout Australia:
Prayer for the Blessing of Rain Lord God,
Bless Australia – our Great South Land of the Holy Spirit.
Grant, that as the Cross shines in our southern skies, so may Christ bring light to our nation,
to its peoples old and new.
May we receive the blessing of abundant rain so that the “desert blooms with the life that lies in wait.”
We ask this prayer through Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

2019 Christmas Appeal on behalf of St Vincent de Paul Society (Vinnies)
Don’t forget to contribute to the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal which provides food and gifts for local individuals and families who need our support. The Appeal will conclude on Thursday 21 November and is being organised by Marcellin and Futuna Houses under the leadership of Ms Ryan and Mr Galea.
Don’t delay – contribute now! It would be terrific if each person at our College, staff and students, could make at least one donation to this very worthy Appeal – please be generous!
Christmas Cards for Mission to Seafarers Again this year our staff and students will have the opportunity to be involved in the production of hand-made Christmas cards for distribution to seafarers who will be in Gladstone leading up to, and during, the Christmas period. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to support those women and men who will be apart from their families and loved ones at this special time of the year.
Pastoral Care Class Social Justice Activities 1 Taking a stand … Over 550 students and staff made a stand against poverty recently when they responded to the students of MC1 & MC2 who called on us to “Stand up Against Poverty”. A tremendous effort at raising awareness about the unjust distribution of wealth, and the basic necessities of life, in our world.
2 Homelessness Earlier this term MK5 PC Group gave us the opportunity in PC time to consider the growing rate of homelessness not only in Australia but in many other countries throughout the world. A great group activity which, hopefully, awakened in us a real sense of gratitude when we see how very, very lucky we are to have a home to call our own and friends and families to support us.
3 Crazy Sock Day This is an initiative of Catholic Mission and one way in which our school can fundraise and engage in advocacy and formation activities for Catholic Mission during World Mission Month in October. F3 PC Group invited us to wear some crazy socks to highlight the needs of the children of Ghana, many of whom struggle to have their basic needs met, such as nutritious food and clean water, healthcare, education and safety. Students gave a gold coin donation for the privilege of wearing crazy socks and this was then donated to Catholic Mission to help support these children.
Second Hand Uniforms If needing assistance with the Second Hand Uniform ‘Outlet’ please enquire at the front desk in Student Services. Formal uniforms sell for $10.00 per item, sports uniform and house shirts are $5.00 per item. Jackets are available for $25.00 each. All prices are negotiable. If you have uniforms your child no longer requires - all donations are gratefully accepted and many thanks to those who have already sent in donations. This is a great opportunity to support other families, especially if your child is in Year 12 and you no longer have any need for a uniform.
Thursday Mass 7 November – Ms Van Krimpen’s Year 10 Study of Religion Class Class Mass is celebrated in the College Chapel at 10.40 am each Thursday.
ALL WELCOME – Families, Friends, Members of our Parish, Fellow students!!

Conoco Phillips Science Experience at CQU.
Both Juliet Donahoe and Holly Matheson represented Chanel College at CQU on Monday 21 October. The Science Experience presented by Conoco-Phillips and QMEA was a huge success.
“At the university on Monday, we used apps on a tablet to code small drones and attempted to control their speed as well as where they were going to land. Afterwards, we learnt how to do 3D modelling on the tablets (TinkerCads on Safari). We modelled our own housing structures and they were placed in an online 3D modelled world. We played around in the world and used VR headsets to look around. Lastly, we were tasked with inventing a product which could be used to solve a hypothetical customer's problem, which involved us discussing and brainstorming ideas, and then presenting them to the rest of the group via an iMovie. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed this experience”.
QMEA Mine Challenge 2019
The Queensland Minerals and Energy (QMEA) had a Mine Challenge Project with the aim to determine the costs and schedule and to establish an underground mining operation. It was from the 15th of September to the 20th of September. The accommodation at Mackay Civeo Village was filled with mostly mine workers. It had awesome food and lovely accommodation. Throughout the whole week, I visited Broadmeadows Mine, Peak Downs Mine, BHP Minerals and the Hay Point coal Terminal. I learnt about the mining process of an underground mine and got to see the structure of an underground mine on A3 paper. I got to meet and speak with other students who went on the camp and university graduates who went on a program for experience at Mackay for a year and now work there. I got to wear safety equipment and experience what it felt like to be underground in a training room. I also had a virtual reality experience of operating a longwall as a longwall shearer operator.
We played games at barefoot bowls and had dinner with BMA representatives and graduates. We worked on our projects at a local primary school. We also got to the gym, played basketball and had many laughs. On the last day of camp, we presented our projects to the BMA representatives in which my team won. I would like to thank Dr Bunkum, Ms Wolffe, Mrs Aurora, Mr Fisser and the various staff for the great opportunity and for helping me during my application process. I learnt a lot and had a wonderful time.
