acacle ... ic In addition to maintaining its usual high stand

ards of academic excellence, Chaminade has recently made ' significant advances in its teaching prog ram. Each of these improvements proposes to modernize and supplement the existing teaching

facilities. Some of the more notable changes made this

year include the institution of team teaching, the introduction of Adult Education classes, and the addition of data processing and art to the curriculum. Also, algebra is now taught to the more promising eighth-grade students of local parochial

schools.

Dear Graduates:

I'm sure you will not allow it to be said that your school is a treasure

house of knowledge . Thi s would be bad. it would seem to imply that

Chaminade is a school to which the entering freshmen bring so much and

from which the departing graduates take so little.

You've certainly acquired a good schooling during your years at Cham

inade if you were in the least bit receptive. Something of Chaminade has

surely rubbed off on you. It will be with you forever. Use it! Capitalize

on it! It gives meaning, purpose, direction to your life.

As you read this your days at Chaminade are but memories. Your high

school education is over. Remember this, though! You are not at the end.

You are not even at the beginning of the end. Actual ly , you are now

only at the end of the beg in ning of what each member of your faculty

hopes and prays wil l be a wonderful, happy life for you in this world,

leading to Heaven in the next .

Sincerely yours,

Principal

aulv .... For nature, autumn is a period of transition; it

is a time of change in the life of the Chaminade students as well. He must discard his Bermuda shorts and thongs in favor of the more sophisticated attire that is prescribed in the handbook. For some, it means that the convertible top must remain up until spring; for all it is the time when the casual air of vacation must be laid aside for the more rigorous demands of study.

These hardships do not go unrewarded, however, as the beginning of autumn also marks a return to extracurricular activities. An active Eagle can look forward to spending leisure time in the luxurious annual room, at casual sock-hops and colorful football games-after his three hours of daily study.

• spring As the lethargic days of spring arrived, the pace

of the Eagles faltered a little, perhaps from the heartbreak of the Cincy play-offs. The seniors, though, made gigantic leaps forward during the spring months as they entered wholeheartedly into the spirit of their closed retreats at the Marianist Retreat House.

The newly-acquired Student Council printing press was productive as signs in multi-color appeared announcing the Spring Festival, the Junior-Senior Prom, and the sophomore's "Under the Hawaiian Moon." The largest raffle return in the school's history made the Spring Festival an impressive success.

Continuing the cultural program initiated during the winter months, the Chaminade Art . Gallery was installed in the main corridor thanks to the interest and monetary assistance of the Chaminade Co-Educators. A talented troupe from Chaminade and Julienne professionally staged the popular comedy, Toll Story , on May 10th and 12th.

Even to the most disinterested senior, May 25th seemed imminent throughout the spring. And it was all history for the class of '63 as the last day of school was completed on May 16th at 2 :45 P.M.

cia •••• Gleefully, hesitantly, the class of '63 made great

strides toward maturity as they prayed, learned and socialized in their last year at Chaminade. An outstanding class, the seniors boast four military academy appointments. John Mikula will spend four years at West Point; Mike T.oombs, Mike Gauger and Jerry Wenner received appointments to the Air Force Academy, making Chaminade the only school in the nation having three seniors going to the academy in Denver. The junior class, led by a dynamic president, con

tributed valuable manpower to t~e debate team and editorial staffs of the school's publications. The class of '64 made a most impressive contribution on the Eagles' state runner-up cross country team.

The underclassmen took the lead, as usual, in the fund raising efforts, finishing first and second in the Bishops' Relief Fund and the Spring Festival Drive. The sophomore class proved that the old Eagle spirit was anything but dead, as they en .. thusiastically backed all school sponsored activities. The shy frosh soon learned to accept the pace of high school and ran a little timidly at first, to gain their share of the laurels.

The CHAMINADE CO-EDUCATORS' ASSOCIATION (Formerly the Chaminade Fathers' and Mothers' Clubs)

extend to you) our sons) CONGRATULATIONS on this happy occasion of your graduation from Chaminade

The Co-Educators' Association has been the binding agent of your school years. Through it your parents

and your teachers have coordinated their mutual efforts in order to make your school years safe, secure

and rewarding.

The Scholastic Assurance Plan, which is a unique feature of the Co-Educators' Association, has stood

silently but solidly beside you throughout your years in Chaminade. Its purpose has been to see you

through to the eventful day of your graduation even if Almighty God, in His wisdom, decided to call

the parent who was your principal support and sustenance.

Some of you have felt the hand of friendship provided by Sch<?lastic Assurance. All of you have had

your school years enriched by the efforts of the Association.

May God be with you in the years allotted to you. May your education keep you on the high road of self

government and may it be a stepping stone from which you will build a thousand stairways to the stars.

gerard greene i have studied a few times the marble-head which was chiseled for me -a boat with an unfurled sail at rest in the miami river in fantasy it pictures not my life but my destination. for love was offered me but i unfastened the ring from my nose sorrow knocked at my door but the knob fell into my hand. ambition called to me but i still had river water in my ears. success welcomed me but the mat was slippery with kelp. yet all the while i only hungered for an endless meal ticket in life. and now i know that we must furl that unfurled sail. and catch some kind of air to thrust me forward into the cool beyond. but life without gas is the torture of restless and vague desire for gaseousness. it is the boat longing for catch but still afloat on the great miami. so on i will go, sailing and seasicking through the polluted waters of life.

A hitherto unpublished work of Freeman Frod, poet laureate of

SCHMALTZ'S ANCIENT HISTORY 45

after the war brought prosperity to the United States. In the latter fifties man began his conquest of space. Also notable during this era was the renaissance of culture which occurred in 1963. Peculiarly, this rebirth began at a secondary school in Dayton, Ohio, in a class known as the 4F Freds. Their numerous contributions are enumerated below.

The noted artist, Brother Joseph Barrish, S.M., is to this day imitated by the avantguarde artists of Paris. Among his most valuable works are his madonnas, which range in price from $500,000 to S1,000 ,000. Conducting a studio in the basement of a medieval castle, he inspired many of his students, including Robert Powers, James Nellis, and Thomas Osterday. Powers is noted for his abstractions of the human form; Nellis for his vivid rustics ; Osterday for his geometrics.

In the field of athletics, several of this group excelled. Thomas Poeppelmeier, Robert Peitz, Thomas Rave, and Mark Nemecek trayeled to the Olympic Games in Tokyo, and carried home gold medals in the basketball, hop skip and jump, wrestling, and 100-yard dash events.

Chuck Ruemping, a good-looking poet, wrote many beautiful sonnets about the glories of nature. In his secondary school days he was known as a gay, offbeat individual. But it wasn't until he began composing poetry that his true character was exposed.

Richard Rinaldo, then a super-intellect, succeeded Caroline Kinudy to the White House. During his four-year term a renewed interest in the art of speaking came about. Rinaldo's secretary of state, Clifford Ruble, (his understudy was John Ruble, who carried a resemblance) managed to establish peaceful relations with the USSR and premier Thov Jamavich Payne. Rinaldo's ambassador to Spain, Walter Rubin de Salis, became a close friend of Franco, thereby establishing closer relations with Spain.

Thomas Reiger, James Payne, and William Neu had a profound influence upon the clothing styles of that age. Their tee shirt and vest creation was internationally popular.

4F produced many noted authors. Among the most prominent of these are J. E. Richards, Donald Reinhard, J. Stephen Redick, and Michael Redden. Richards wrote mainly social criticism; Reinhard composed his theories on scientific endeavor; Redick wrote a television series called "Me and My Pansies ." Redden is the most renowned of the group. As a satirist, he wrote such monumental works as, Early Birds Don't Catch ].J7 arms, Leading the Pack, Fred Badge of Cotlrage, and Far Above the Madding Crowd.

Eventually taking over the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Richard Portune, David Pflum, Thomas Rosato, John Pickrel, Robert Powell, and Mike Probst proved

themselves the finest musicians in the world. All but Rosato played many instruments, Rosato specialized in the zither. Also notable in this field was Robert Quatman, although he never won international acclaim, because of his basic love for rock 'n roll.

Michael Riley, Bill Prinz, and Robert Neumann excelled jointly in the field of science. Through experimentation and research they came up with a new electron theory.

The only infamous members of the group, Michael Russel and Oscar Nass, were philosophers. Instigating . a movement to set fire to Washington, they were sentenced

Scene One. (Ye Olde Chaminade. A compartment Enter tutor. Pupils in chairs.)

Tutor: Good day fine class, Ah, the morn, in russet mantle clad, Walks o'er the dew of yon eastern hill.

Pupils: Cheers, you smart wight. Prithee, what have you for us Today?

Tutor: Pray, do you not remember? Twas but a day ago, I told you Of a quiz.

Pupils: Horrors no, this evil destiny we Wish upon no man. Give us but one more chance Kind gentleman.

(smiling) Tutor: No, no. I won't stand for your

Supposed cogging. So with no delay a sheet of paper you must lay upon your desk this glorious day.

(classmates to each other) Pupils: One may smile, and smile, and be A Villian.

(class assembles in a huddle in the rear, teacher remains in front)

Tutor: I fear something is rotten in the State of Denmark. (awaits silence)

Alright, let us begin with problem one, To be or not to be, that is the question.

Whither goest thou? Wherefore dost thou leave?

(A spokesman from the class steps forward)

Spokesman: I stand not here to quillet, yet I must remind you that The quality of mercy is not strained, And besides, the sweet wind doth gently kiss The trees, and I fear tis far too nice To don your charter, and stay within. But, timorous wretch, there shall always be a Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow.
