As students in a Marianist and Notre Dame High School we are very proud of our heritage. Being inspired by the Characteristics of Marianist Education and the Notre Dame Mission Tenets, students are dedicated to becoming student leaders. The student body is offered many different opportunities to utilize their own individual gifts and talents to better not only our direct community but also our world community. A dedicated staff of individuals work endlessly teaching, inspiring, and helping students grow as community' students are led by example. Faith and service are

key aspects to the daily lives of students at Charninade·Julienne. It is through daily prayer, monthly liturgies, service work, participating in LIFE, connecting on retreats, and living the charisms by which we are taught that we have grown into the Chaminade-Julienne family: laughing, crying, praying, and working together to better our world. It is like Mary McLeod Bethune said "Without faith, nothing is possible. With it, nothing is impossible." We have proved that time and time again here at Chaminade-Julienne.

"Education is the power to think clearly, the power to act well in the world's work, and the power to

appreciate life." -Brigham

EDUCATION Though we start our school day around 8:00 AM, we

have found that we are always learning, even beyond 3:00 PM. Chaminade-Juliennehas always been about educating the whole person. By educating the whole person, the C-J community is able to become life-long learners and contributing members of society. We have found that education is key in life. C-J promotes this at all times, be it academically, intellectually, artistically, athletically, spiritually, and socially. Teachers take the time to educate students so that we may use our best judgment and do what God would want us to do. That's what makes C-J different from other schools.

what survives when

what has been

forgotten."

-B. F Skinner

transmission of culture but also a provider

of alternative views of the world and a

strengthener of the will to explore them."

people anything. You can only help them discover it within themselves."

DOES

MEAN TO

yOU? "We have become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic.

Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams."

-Jimmy Carter

C-J is more than a melting pot; we don't all look the same, act the same, or believe the same things. But, we come together to make the beautiful mosaic that is ChaminadeJulienne.

Our diversity is more than different races, religions, and backgrounds. Diversity is the interaction between these differences. When we all come to C-J, we incorporate everyone's culture and history without losing our own identity. We embrace and appreciate the differences rather than simply tolerate them.

SENIOR MEMORIES "Life isn't a destination-it's a journey.

Everything that happens to us shapes who we are becoming. And, in the adventure of each day, we discover the best in ourselves."

-Anonymous

E or the last four years, the class of

2005 has traveled together. Soon we

must branch out on our own indepen

dent journeys. Looking back on our time

spent together we recall our fondest memo

ries. As we reflect on 'life at C] we remember

times for rejoicing and times of grieving.

The seniors of 2005 will remember the

shock of 9/11, Mr. Trainor and his powerful

"hohoho" at the winter Christmas concert,

helping to earn state championships, getting

crunk during powder puff, pep rallies, the

enticing game of donkey basketball, end

less study halls of procrastination, extreme

discomfort in occasionally attempting to

keep shirt tails tucked in, getting "down" at

students of diversity assemblies, and finally

in our seniors defeating the infamous Alter

knights. Although there will come a time

when the people of C] may seem distant,

the impact of our time spent at C] will

never leave us. The memories created here .

will stay with us forever.

The students at Chaminade-]ulienne are devoted

to their school. Support is shown through all the

activities C] provides. From pep rallies to service

projects C] has a great sense of pride. Their positive

attitude and good sportsmanship has earned them

the Harold A. Meyer award for the 4th year in a

row. The eagle spirit brings together all students,

faculty and alumni.

The eagle cheerleaders pose for a photo before a men's basketball game. They always know how to get the crowd pumped up during every game.

The "letter boys" could be seen at each eagle football game standing proud and cheering their team on. The E-A-G-L-E-S, always came prepared with green and blue paint and an abudance of enthusiasm.

The "letter boys" (l-r) Dan Hundt, Pete Spanel, Alex Treadway, Nathan Loyd, Tyler Rigsby and

Summer Mission Trips This summer marks the seventh year that C-J students have gone on summer mission trips. Through the Catholic Heart Workcamp, two groups of students traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsion and Elhart, Indiana. There they met up with students from all across the country to serve the local community. This service entailed fixing up houses, cleaning up lots, painting buildings, and a variety of other odd jobs. Every evening, the students spent time growing closer with their small groups as well as strenghtening their faith. This was done through singing, dancing, praying, and reflecting on the day's work. C-J also had the opportunity to host CHWC when campers came to Dayton for a project of their own. These trips were a big sucess and a great way to get involved.

"M ission (fip was very inspirarional. People from all across me counrry arri ved and spenr a week singing, worshipping, and serving rhe communi ty rogerher. HUNGERAND HOMELESS AWARENESS WEEK

"Volunteers give from the heart!" One week out of the school year the whole school community comes together to help the less fortunate in our area. Building community is a hard job but C-J students tackle the problem of hunger and homelessness by bringing in canned goods and other personal items to help aid local charities and organizations who alos work to beeter the lives of those whos living conditions are less than adequate. The C-J community collected enough bags, canned goods, and personal items to help stock the shelves of three dayton organizations. This is just another reason to show the C-J is all about helping others!

The C] football players "put 'em up" for the starting kick off of the Alter vs. C] tournament game. This year the eagles had the last laugh when they defeated the Alter Knights during the second round of tournament. It was definitely a sweet victory, eipecially the seniors, being the first time that C] had defeated Alter in four years. As senior Jason Piekenbrock described it, "beating Alter was the greatest satisfaction in my life."

3. Nick was in the spotlight this year for his dramatic catch of the winning touchdown during the final seconds of the Northmonr game.

When one thinks of a stampede, one usually associates it with wild animals numing for their lives. But cross country rwmers know that every Satmday from the end of August to the beginning of October, there will be stampedes of men and women running not for their lives, but for £1111.

This year, the Chaminade-Julienne cross cow1try teams united. The men and women practiced together, prayed together, and created a great support system dming the meets. And the benefits of working together showed through. The seniors, juniors, and underclassmen constantly stepped up and each meet broke their own prs (personal records) . This constant drive to run faster and improve built everyone up to anticipate the end of the season with the major meets. However, the end of the season was bitter-sweet. Many runners were injured with shinsplints, foot injuries, knee and breathing problems, and stress fractmes. These obstacles made the GCL and District meets both physically and mentally tough, especially for seniors who were running competitively, some of them for their last time. But, this did allow under-classmen to step up, which they did. "I wouldn't say [the injuries were] positive because [they] encourged others to step up, because they drained the energy and morale of the team. It was awesome because the underclassmen did step up, but I feel bad for the guys who ran for years and at the end of their senior year, they couldn't perform to their full potential" said Coach Mominee.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL The Tradition Continues

The 2004 volleyball season was nothing short of extrodinary. Sporting an 18-7 record, the "Eaglettes" had a lot to be proud of With their toughest schedule in years, including matches with future state champions St. Henry and Newark-Catholic, they also played high ranked teams from Kentucky. A highlight of the season came with a shut-out victory over Roger Bacon-the Cincinnati powerhouse and eventual state champion. Fan support was phenominal throughout the year. Packed houses cheered the team against cross town rivals Carroll and Alter. The team will graduate five seniors, but looks to be back strong next year.

Dance turnabout. The dance

may have been ladies' choice,

but it proved to be a fun night

for everyone in attendance.

The Christmas Dance is the

first dance that freshman are

allowed to attend, with many

showing up to experience

their first high school dance.

Even a false fire alarm could

not stop or alter the moods

and Christmas Spirit of the

students embraced the theme

by sharing a goodnight kiss

1 ... 2 ... 3 ... Smile! The 04-05 Yearbook Satff consisted of fifteen juniors and seniors. Jim Pera headed the large group along with Margharita Worth, the yearbook editor in chief Every day 7th period was spent taking pictures of the student

body and working on spreads. The staff was also required to follow all extra curricular activities which included the sports teams and clubs. The students worked extremely hard in and out of class

to create a wonderful yearbook full of memories and good times.

Senior, Maribeth Yingling shuffles through the camera at the end of seventh period Yearbook to see what pictures were taken that day. This was Maribeth's favorite part of Yearbook class.

Mr. Joe Staley watches over the busy Yearbook room one day while Yearbook teacher, Jim Pera is out. "Everyone knows what needs to be done when they walk into the room. It is not chaos, there is just a lot of work to be completed," says Junior, Lauren Stayer of the Yearbook Staff.

Yea~book teacher, Jim Pera and Junior, Katy Olmstead look through a picture in an atttempt to identifY certain people for the Yearbook.

2. Elaine Marinnan and Stephanie Ross had fun every day together.

3. Seniors, Maribeth Yingling, Susie Thurin, and Pete Spanel are on a mission to take pictures of the Science Department.

4. Juniors, Maggie Moore and Brittany Naas love being creative in yearbook class.

5. Samantha Budd, Brittany Naas, and megan mercer take a break from the computer. All three girls enjoyed yearbook so much that they will be on the staff again for their senior year.

Mock Trial

"Bigs & Stories ... "

Big Brothers-Big Sisters and Stories Come Alive are just two of the many outstanding service programs coordinated by the Community Service program at C-J under the direction of Mrs. Kelli Kinnear. Students who participate in these activities all share an 8th period study hall and during that time they either prepare for their visits to their partner schools, or spend time with their "littles" in the field. This year the "Bigs" shared their time with students at Richard Allen Academy and Dayton Catholic. The Stories Come Alive program was active in the Kindergarten & First Grade classes at Resurrection and Webster Elementary. These are C-J students at their finest, making a difference in the lives of kids.

On Friday February 11, 2005 several CJ students participated in the Mock Trial District competition at the Montgomery County Courthouse. They competed against teams from other schools in a live courtroom environment before actual judges and attorneys. This year's case is a civil case dealing with issues of animal rights and free speech. Our "varsity" team placed first overall, defeating teams from eighteen other schools including perennial powerhouse St. Xavier. Our team's first place finish qualified them for the State Competition in Columbus. Senior Nathan Loyd and junior Katy Martinez each won Best Attorney awards. Also, juniors James Harris, Krista Seaman and Nikki Winchester all won Best Witness awards. The team placed 10th overall at the State competition. They performed extremely well, narrowly missing advancing to the state finals. Nathan Loyd, James Harris and Krista Seaman all won individual awards for the performances at state.

Homeroom is the period where

SociAl Studies It was another year of home

work, quizzes, tests, papers,

and projects for C-J students

taking social studies classes.

This was the first year that

all Sophomores had to take

American Studies, which was

formerly a Junior class. Some

students weren't happy about

the switch, because they no

longer had the option of tak

ing an honors level course.

However, they could opt to

take AP (Advanced Place

ment) American Studies

either their Junior or Senior

year, which is now taught by

Mr. Sparrow, who in addition

taught Psychology. Other new

additions to the Social Studies

program at C-J include Mr.

Shuster and Mr. Colvin, who

taught American Studies and

??, respectivly. This was also the

last year for Mr. Glancy who

taught World Cultures and

Psychology for the past several

years. This being a presidential

election year, Ms. Ruffalo'sAP

Government class had many

debates over the candidates,

John Kerry and George Bush,

and their issues. These debates

were open for other classes to

watch throughout the school

day to learn more about the

candidates.

Mr. Colvin makes a poine during one of his World Cultures classes. Mr. Colvin is also one of our assistane varsity football coaches.

As Freshmen, students begin learning about the Old and New Testament. As Sophmores, students study Christology. Moving on into their Junior year, the focus shifts toward moral and social issues. Finally, as Seniors, students learn about Church History and Christian Lifestyles. Throughout ones four years at CJ, religion will be a major part of what a student has learned. The staff here at CJ works incredibely hard to impart students with impecable knowledge. From class projects to fun group discussions, Religion class never gets boring.

Mrs. McCrate lectures her Religion class using the projection screen. Teachers use this method to outlline the class and students take notes as they talk.
