BIKE RACKS
COMING
DOWNTOWN The Greater Westerly Chamber
Foundation will be installing four bike
racks with a vintage design, as shown
here, at the ice rink downtown. The
initiative is intended to encourage more
people to ride their bikes downtown, and
to provide adequate, safe locations for bike
storage. The vintage designs compliment
our historic downtown’s character. They
are similar in nature to the wayfinding
signs that The Chamber installed last year.
A second location is being sought for
another bike rack downtown. Thanks to
the Keepspace Westerly program for
supporting this project with funding.
The Chamber of Commerce will be
producing WINGS & WISHES, a butterfly
garden event in July 2013 at Pleasant
Acres Nursery. Anyone interested in
serving on the committee to help produce
this community event should contact Lisa
Konicki at [email protected]

Downtown Westerly-Pawcatuck has been
making notable physical improvements in the
past 8 weeks thanks to a new Façade
Improvement Program of the Greater Westerly
Chamber Foundation. More than $6,000 has
been awarded in grants to assist business and
property owners in making improvements to
their buildings. The program funds windows,
doors, awnings, signage and exterior paint
jobs.
Patricia Isted (1) and Evan Isted with Lisa Konicki
The Twisted Vine received the first check
from the Chamber’s facade improvement
program. The $1000 grant supported the
purchase of a new door and window.
Congratulations to Patricia Isted and her son
Evan on their efforts to bring this new
downtown business to fruition.
Work at River Terrace building
Tenants of the River Terrace building
coordinated their efforts for a joint
application that secured $2,000 total to
support painting of the building that houses
the 5 businesses. The dramatic
improvements to this iconic downtown
structure have been hailed as the ideal
example of a private-public partnership for
revitalization progress. Visit downtown
often in the coming weeks and you will
note many other improvements that take
place with other store fronts.

Regular Folks Cast Aside
Modesty for 2013
Calendar The Chamber of Commerce has produced a
third humorous calendar that features over 30
respected local businessmen who have agreed
to cast aside their modesty for fundraising.
The photos show men in various stages of
undress, often with just a “prop” that relates
to their business. The following professional
photographers donated services to
photograph the men. Ronald Cowie
Photography of Charlestown, Christine
Corrigan Photography of Pawcatuck, Maria
Scaglione Photography of Westerly, and Seth
Jacobson Photography of Saunderstown.
Calendars will be sold at more than 30
locations in the community. The project is
being coordinated by the Greater Westerly-
Pawcatuck Chamber of Commerce, and all
expenses are being incurred by The Chamber
as well. However, the Chamber is sharing
50% of the profits with several non-profit
organizations.
The 2009 and 2010 Men of Westerly
calendars raised over $19,000 combined for
local charities.
The Men of Westerly 2013 Calendar features
a diverse group of businessmen who are all
members of the Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck
Chamber of Commerce and supportive of the
local charities involved. They range in age
from their late 20’s to men in their 60’s.
helped encourage new business start ups and

the Downtown Business Association, rising

term as its President. Nancy passed away
November 17, 2010. At the time of print,
scholarship donations had been received from

Additional donations are being accepted and
checks can be made payable to Greater

National Clothing Line
Scouts Westerly for
Photo Shoot Chamber Director Lisa Konicki spent a day
touring several Watch Hill homes and
properties that were being considered by an
upscale national retailer for a photo shoot of
their spring 2013 kids line. Grant Simmons
was a huge help in assisting with
coordinating visits to some of the specific
homes and properties that were of interest to
the producers. While ultimately, Martha’s
Vineyard was selected for the photo shoot,
Watch Hill remains a contender for an 8 day
shoot in mid October. If secured, that shoot
would bring 35 people to our community for
8 days. This would be a welcome boost to
our local economy in the shoulder season.
Either way, Watch Hill is now on the radar
screen of a major retailer and we feel
confident that we will secure a shoot in the
near future.

Westerly schools. In addition, a long-term

contributions of artifacts, photographs, and
