Northeast Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce

Ever since I left the governor’s office, I have watched thousands of good-paying manu-facturing jobs leave our great state, leaving families in crisis. And I have been trying to figure out new ways in Washington to help our state officials reverse that trend. Recently, we got a big win signed into law for Ohio businesses – but our work can’t stop there.

A few weeks ago, President Bush signed into law an amendment I authored that promises to help struggling businesses

make new investments, expand operations and create jobs. The Foreclosure Preven-tion Act of 2008 included my amendment to provide tax relief to the very companies that are hurting the most in Ohio.

It allows companies operating at a loss the option of claiming their accumulated alter-native minimum tax (AMT) and research and development (R&D) tax credits if they use the funds to make new capital invest-ments and create new jobs. But time is running out – this provision expires at the end of 2008. I hope that every eligible company takes advantage of it.

While this is a big win indeed, our work is far from done. I am pursuing even more initiatives to improve the competitiveness of U.S. and Ohio businesses:

Corporate Tax Reform: I recently intro-duced a bill, the Manufacturing, Assem-bling, Development, and Export in the USA Tax Act — or MADE in the USA Tax Act — to provide tax relief to domestic corpora-tions and small businesses. My legislation would eliminate tax breaks that advantage foreign competitors and encourage compa-nies to move jobs overseas, and the addi-tional revenues would then be used to cut taxes on large and small businesses that invest and create jobs in the United States, including: cutting the corporate tax rate to 28 percent from 35 percent; increasing the domestic activities deduction to 12 percent from 9 percent of qualifying income for S corporations and partnerships that are not taxed at the corporate rate; and making permanent the expanded small business expensing provision enacted in 2003 and that expires in 2011.

Energy Independence: I have cosponsored multiple pieces of legislation to increase our domestic supply of both traditional and alter-native energy sources, including oil, coal, natural gas, oil shale, tar sands, nuclear power and other forms of alternative and renewable energy. I recently introduced an

amendment that would open up the Outer Continental Shelf to oil and gas exploration and use a portion of the revenues to fund research into alternative energy. I am also leading the effort to make Ohio a leader in energy production by expanding nuclear power and coal-to-liquids technology.

Intellectual Property Rights: I have joined Senators Specter, Leahy and Bayh to intro-duce comprehensive intellectual property (IP) enforcement legislation that treats IP theft with the seriousness it demands by offering a focused, aggressive solution to stop counterfeiting. Our bill would preserve jobs and protect the health and safety of American citizens by increasing IP enforce-ment through improved coordination among the federal and state agencies charged with IP protection and making permanent many of the President’s current initiatives to combat IP theft.

Workforce Development: This year, I introduced legislation aimed at making it easier for states to develop regional work-force development and economic develop-ment programs that meet the needs of the workers and employers. The Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Develop-ment (WIRED) Act of 2008 will help states attract and retain businesses and jobs by helping to ensure that the state can leverage its federal workforce dollars with federal development dollars. This will help ensure that Ohio has a well-qualified and well-trained workforce that meets regional employers’ needs.

I am very concerned about our country and the ability of our businesses to compete in a global economy. I will continue to work hard to build an infrastructure of competitiveness so that our businesses can prosper and create jobs for hardworking Ohioans.

For more detail about using the AMT and R & D tax credits, please feel free to contact Jan Fowler in my DC office at 202-224-3353.

Combat Misery at WorkUnderstanding the Problem of AnonymityImagine your first day on a job. With equal measures of expectation and dread, you head to work, not sure yet what you face – much less who you’ll be working with. Now, imagine waking up to go to work a year later, and all you feel is the dread. You feel like no one would miss you much if you didn’t show up, and you certainly wouldn’t miss the job, but you can’t afford to lose it. So you go in each day and do what’s required. But you spend hours in your lonely workspace just waiting to go home.

This isn’t what you thought you were signing on for. On top of that, there’s no one you can share your frustra-tions with. And if another opportunity presented itself, you’d be the first to jump ship and leave.

Sounds miserable, doesn’t it?

What would you do if you were the employer in this situation, with this miserable worker on your watch? Their attitude and work ethic is lack-luster to say the least. Worse, it seems to be rubbing off on the rest of your team. Morale is low, productivity is at a minimum, and you aren’t sure what to do. After all, people are in control of their own attitudes, right? You find yourself slipping into apathy, resigning yourself to the idea that you’re power-less to change the situation. Or are you?

The truth is, there is an answer to your problem. And it’s easier than you might think. What you’re dealing with is the problem of anonymity – when an employee feels that no one sees or cares about them at work. According to Patrick Lencioni, author of The Three Signs of a Miserable Job, solving the problem of anonymity is one of the three keys to fostering fulfilled, valu-able, and passionate employees – no matter what your industry or market.

The Problem with Anonymity

So, why does anonymity create job

misery? It all boils down to this one fact: People want to be treated like people. All the time. Everywhere. Even at work. This means that they need to be seen, heard, and known. Why is this important? For one, people spend a lot of time at work. And when they’re miserable on the job, that misery easily creeps into other facets of life. Miserable jobs create miserable people, and that vicious cycle is tough to escape.

There’s another reason it’s important to tackle anonymity at work: “People who see themselves as invisible, generic, or anonymous cannot love their jobs, no matter what they are doing,” Lencioni says. And people don’t thrive – or stay for long – at jobs they hate. On the other hand, when people feel acknowledged at work, they are more apt to be loyal, moti-vated, and productive.

The Solution to Anonymity

So if anonymity is such a problem, how

can you cure it? Again, the answer is clear and simple – by personally investing time into building relationships. This will look different for every leader. But it’s important that it starts from the top, with anyone who manages people. That’s because the rela-tionship between an employee and their direct supervisor is the No. 1 indicator of job satisfaction. In fact, poor or nonexis-tent relationships are the top reason most dissatisfied workers leave companies. And the costs of turnover and job dissatisfaction are high – they drain time, resources, and money out of companies everywhere, every day.

That’s why top priority for every manager should be the fine art of managing – people, that is. Though it may seem impossible to fit anything else into an already tight schedule of meetings, reports, and budgets, every moment you invest in building relationships will pay back in dividends.

Rethinking Depression and Your HealthMichael Keys, Director, Senior Adult Psychiatry, Lindner Center of HOPE

presented by Lindner Center of HOPE & TriHealth Corporate Health Working Healthy

Not meaning to depress you, it’s time to have a serious discussion about depres-sion – and in particular, depression and your overall health. Turns out that depres-sion is bad for you. It can literally shrink your brain and set you up for all sorts of health issues. While many of us think we have some understanding of depression, most of us will underestimate the impact our mood has on our health. Current research supports that depression is not simply a psychological problem, but a syndrome that has marked impact upon both our mind and body. If you read no further, please note that depression is treatable. This is why recognizing depression is so important in terms of our overall health.

Just what is depression and what does the psychiatrist mean when he talks about clinical depression? Depression can be a simple symptom that does not tell us much about the underlying illness, much like what a sneeze is to the flu or shortness of breath is to underlying congestive heart failure. Psychiatrists will speak of the clinical syndrome of depression, known as Major Depression, as not just a single symptom but a cluster of recognizable symptoms. Major Depression is characterized not only by persistent negative mood, but occurs with other symptoms such as sleep and appetite disturbance, lack of interest, irrita-bility, and negative thought. Clinical depres-sion is not a transient reaction, but persists over time and impacts upon day-to-day function and quality of life.

The DSM-IV, the guide to psychiatric diag-nosis, defines the criteria for the diagnosis of Major Depression as follows:

• Persistent Sad or “empty” mood• Loss of interest in ordinary

pleasurable activities, including sex• Decreased energy, easily fatigued• Sleep disturbance including insomnia,

early morning awakening or sleeping too much

• Eating disturbance including loss of appetite and weight or over eating

• Difficulty concentrating, remembering, and indecisiveness

• Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness, hopelessness

• Thoughts of death and suicide• Irritability• Excessive crying• Chronic aches and pain• Symptoms are present most of the

time, most days for at least 2 weeks

In the year 2000, The World Health Organi-zation found that depression is the leading cause of disability and the 4th leading contributor to the global burden of disease. In a study that looked at a variety of chronic medical illness ranging from arthritis, chronic pulmonary disease, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, the severity of depres-sion was the single most important factor in predicting overall health status outcomes, general health status, disability, and sense of well-being. But here is the take home message: the same researchers reported that treatment of depression was associ-ated with improved health outcomes, quality of life, and overall decreased disability.

While no workplace is perfect, the key is how often and how intense the problems are. The best thing you can do is take responsibility for your own behavior. Here are some suggestions of things you can do to improve your relationships at work.

• Be aware of your behaviors and reactions to your boss and co-workers. Don’t be too

hard on yourself, but do take an honest look at whether or not you are happy with how you are handling things.

• Take time to review whether you are using positive communications skills. State what you mean clearly and assertively but not aggressively. Listen to what others are saying and let them know you are listening.

• Focus on co-workers’ abilities, not on their personalities. Even if you don’t like some-one’s “style”, you can still respect his work.

• You are not your work. If you don’t meet

your numbers one month or don’t get posi-tive feedback about your project or depart-ment, it does not mean you are a bad person. Step back and take an objective look at how you can improve your performance. If this one is very hard for you, it may be time to take a look at how you are balancing work and your life outside of work.

Although no work situation is perfect, it is possible to improve your relationships with your co-workers and create an enjoy-able work situation for yourself. Recognize that your family background can influence how you relate to others, and then work to improve your communication and social skills.

Cox Ohio Publishing Releases New Online Press Release Tool

National Franchise Awards Local “Ohio Dryer Guy”Local business owner and Northeast Cincin-nati Chamber Member, Ed Rauch, of Dryer Vent Wizard Greater Cincinnati, was awarded the franchise’s highest honor at the recent Dryer Vent Wizard national convention. Greg Longe, co-president of Dryer Vent Wizard - Dry Clothes, Safe Homes headquartered in Warren, MI, awarded Rauch with the Most Valuable Player and Franchisee of the Year Award 2008. This award is presented to the local franchise owner who demonstrates exceptional customer service, growth in sales and willingness to help fellow franchisees.

“I love what I do,” said Rauch. “Cleaning and repairing dryer vents to prevent fires and help customers save money on their energy costs is extremely rewarding. This franchise award is a nice compliment to the professionalism and efforts of our qualified team of technicians.”

Although often neglected by many home-owners, condominium communities, and commercial businesses, a dryer vent often becomes the source of problems and some-times catastrophes. According to the U.S. Fire Administration there are an average of 15,000 dryer fires in the U.S. with an approximate $88 million in property damage, 15 deaths and 400 injuries annually. “Failure to clean” was cited as the leading factor contributing to clothes dryer fires in residential buildings. Similar reports by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, (CPSC), confirm annual maintenance of dryers and dryer vents as a home safety issue lacking consumer awareness.

While Rauch has worked hard to educate local consumers on the necessity of having an annual inspection and dryer vent cleaning, he admits that there is still a lack of knowledge about the subject. “When owners of homes, condos, apartments, and businesses find their dryer taking more than one cycle to dry a load, they assume it’s mechanical,” said Rauch.

“The real problem is usually lint accumulation in the dryer vent causing the dryer to work inef-ficiently and become susceptible to a dryer fire. Most people don’t have the expertise and tools to properly assess a dryer vent’s lint accumula-tion and to clean it thoroughly.”

Consumers can easily schedule an inspection and cleaning through Rauch’s website, www.

After a decade of moves throughout Cincin-nati, and weekly set ups and tear downs at various rental facilities, Mars Hill Academy has been pleased to call its new facility in Mason, home. The school is currently in its third year of operation at 4230 Aero Drive, just off I-71 and Western Row.

According to MHA’s Director of Development Susan Carter, Mars Hill is the only established K-12 classical and Christian school in greater Cincinnati, and in all of Ohio. It is one of 15 accredited Association of Classical and Chris-tian Schools among over 200 ACCS schools in the country. Currently, 227 students are enrolled. Although the school was founded in 1996 in Anderson Township, ultimately the board chose the site in Mason due to the Lord’s leading to the area and the availability of 13 acres zoned for a school. The new facility was recently showcased in the annual archi-tectural publication Learning By Design as an

“outstanding educational facility” that “succeeds in enriching the learning environment.”

Of greater significance, however, is the school’s uniquely classical curriculum. Mars Hill is part of a growing nationwide movement to revive classical and Christian education, a form of education with roots in ancient Greece and Rome, and was the predominant form of education in America at its founding. “In fact,” says Carter, “most of our founding fathers were classically educated.” The pillars of classical education include the teaching of grammar (of all subjects, including Latin), formal logic, and rhetoric. These three stages of a classical curriculum correspond to what is commonly known as the elementary years, junior high, and high school.

The notable results of classical education throughout history, the writings of various scholars, pastors, and philosophers, and modern-day success stories are evidence that a classical curriculum, grounded in the Scriptures and combined with parental support, develops individuals who are life-long learners, discerning thinkers, and godly leaders. One conventional measure of the school’s academic success in that one third of its gradu-ates (there have been six graduating classes) have achieved National Merit Scholar Finalist or Commended Student status.

Other distinctives of the school include spiri-tually mature and highly qualified staff, and a Christian culture manifesting the Scriptural standards of truth, goodness, and beauty (Philippians 4:8). What the students study, their schoolwork, their dress, and their interac-tions with one another are measured against high standards, “creating a wonderful learning environment characterized by respect and joy,” according to Carter. “Our teachers model Christian behavior and attitudes every day, and lovingly nurture the children in an effort to instill a love of God and godly character,” she continues.

More information regarding classical and Christian education, (including Why Latin?), and Mars Hill Academy can be found at www.marshill.edu. The school welcomes visitors at any time. To schedule a classroom visit, please call 513-770-3223.

Waddell & Reed Advisors Funds and Ivy Funds were awarded two out of the eight overall mutual fund awards presented for 2008 by Lipper, Inc., a national fund research firm. The Waddell & Reed Advisors Funds was named best Overall Fund Family in the small firm category (those with $28 billion or less in total assets) and Ivy Funds was the top family in the Mixed Asset category for small firms. Lipper, as it does annually, presented awards based on “the fund groups’ reliably solid, risk-adjusted performance.”

“We greatly appreciate this significant honor, which is further testament that we are providing high-quality investment products to each and every client,” said Jason Koslow, a Financial Advisor with the Waddell and Reed Cincinnati

office.

The awards were presented at the annual Lipper Fund Awards ceremony in New York. Other categories awarded include Overall-Large, Equity Group-Large, Equity Group-Small, Fixed Income Group-Large, Fixed Income Group-Small, and Mixed Asset-Large.

“This recognition, along with being named the top fund family by Barron’s earlier this year, is among the highest honors a firm can receive, given that it is presented by a respected research organization,” said Henry J. Herrmann, CEO of Waddell & Reed Financial Inc. “It is further illus-tration of the quality of our investment manage-ment team, the breadth of our product line, and the consistency of our process. We are espe-cially pleased for our clients, as we never forget it is their money we manage, and they have benefited from our consistent focus on funda-mentals over fads.”

According to Lipper, the winners are selected using the Lipper Leader rating for consistent returns for funds with at least 36 months of performance history as of the end of the evalu-ation year. For a detailed explanation, please see the Lipper Leaders methodology docu-ment at www.lipperweb.com.

“The Lipper Fund Awards are about rewarding fund companies that have consistently deliv-ered class-leading performance relative to their peers,” said Eric Almquist, chief operating officer of Lipper. “Winning an award brings deserved industry recognition, underscoring the success of a firm’s investment manage-ment capabilities.”

Both the Waddell & Reed Advisors and Ivy Fund families offer a broad fund lineup covering all major asset categories, including interna-tional and domestic equity funds, specialty funds, fixed income funds and money market funds. The Ivy Funds were named the second fastest growing fund family in 2007, among families with at least $5 billion in total assets under management, according to Financial Research Corporation (FRC).

Waddell & Reed Advisors Funds were the top ranked fund family, and Ivy Funds ranked number eight, on the list of “Best Mutual Fund Families of 2007,” as ranked and published by Barron’s newspaper, out of 67 fund families ranked according to asset-weighted returns in five categories. For that ranking, based on

the Lipper/Barron’s Fund Survey, a fund group must have at least three funds in Lipper’s general U.S.-stock category, as well as one in world equity, which combines global and inter-national funds. They also required at least one mixed-equity fund, which holds both stocks and bonds. Fund shops must also then have at least two taxable bond funds and one tax-exempt offering. For a complete discussion of the ranking methodology, visit the Web link above.

Through its subsidiaries, Waddell & Reed Finan-cial, Inc. provides investment management and financial planning services to clients throughout the United States. Waddell & Reed Investment Management Company serves as investment advisor to the Waddell & Reed Advisors Group of Mutual Funds, W&R Target Funds, Inc. and Waddell & Reed InvestEd Portfolios, Inc., while Ivy Investment Management Company serves as investment advisor to Ivy Funds, Inc. and the Ivy Funds portfolios. Barron’s ranked Waddell & Reed Advisors Funds and Ivy Funds number 23 and 7 (out of 61 firms) and number 9 and 15 (out of 52 firms) for the 5- and 10-year periods ending December 31, 2007, respectively.

Todaro Insurance Group is a company that features Farmers’ Insurance Products. This includes auto, home, life, business, motorcycles and specialty products such as off-road vehicles, motor homes and manufactured homes and boats. Our 24 hour claims department is available whenever you need them, just as we are. We are available 24/7.

We can customize your coverage for your specific needs. Insurance can be confusing and that is where we can offer you assistance in making sure you have the best coverage for the best price. We will not sell you more or less than what your needs require.

Unlike most business we prefer to make house calls. This gives us the opportunity to see first hand what your needs might be. You might have a collection of items you have grown accustom to seeing and we will realize the importance of having these items insured.

Farmers is the third largest Insurance Company in the country. We recently introduced our Flex Insurance Program which will lock in your insurance rates for up to three years. It will also provide declining deductibles in the amount of $100 per year on both comp and collision coverage. In addition, it will forgive multiple accident surcharges over three years.

We have also introduced Pet Protection which will provide coverage for your pet while they are riding with you in your vehicle. It is something I recently added to my policy as my pet schnauzer, Buster, loves to ride in the car with me.

Farmers Insurance and Todaro Insurance Group are always looking at ways to ‘’get you back where you belong’’. Let’s Talk Soon
