From the Regional Managing Director:

Good day Canadian colleagues and thank you for your very warm welcome!

I am delighted to be joining our talented team to further develop what you have already established – a strong presence among both municipal and private water clients, a unique, undeniably experienced and broad environmental team, a steady and reliable transportation team and an oil, gas and chemicals team that can respond to the challenge of a volatile market.

My experience spans all phases of project delivery and has been accrued on an international platform. It has been mere weeks since my family and I returned home to Calgary from Saudi Arabia where we were based for four years through my tenure as President, SNC Lavalin Fayez Engineering (SLFE). I love being back in Canada and look forward to reconnecting with my roots here once again.

What do I hope to bring to CH2M’s Canadian Region? I have had great success in establishing highly effective teams to deliver on tough financial goals in my previous roles and with the guidance of CH2M’s exceptional executive leaders and the Regional Leadership Team, I aim to do the same here. I will represent Canada’s interests at the enterprise level, keeping the well-being of our talented staff and loyal clients as my top priorities.

Let’s turn the page on a new chapter in CH2M Canada’s history. I look forward to the opportunity of meeting each of you in the coming weeks, and learning more about the inspiring projects we will deliver together.

Sincerely,

Alan Cary Regional Managing Director, Canada

COMPLACENCY - by Amy Jongeling/CGTThe dictionary defines complacency as, “self-satisfaction accompanied by unawareness of actual danger or deficiencies”. Numerous accidents have occurred due to allowing ourselves to become complacent in our everyday activity.

Working safely is not easy, nor is it automatic. Many of our jobs are repetitive in nature, and the more we repeat what we are doing, the better the chance that we are becoming complacent without even realizing it. Therein lies the potential danger, the danger of complacency.

Personal safety is not like a light switch that you can turn on or off. The personal safety switch must continuously be in the on position. Just because we feel safe, does not mean we are safe. On the contrary, “feeling safe all the time”, could be the biggest threat to our well-being, because we are drifting into a complacent mode.

One key to avoid the complacency trap is to form “safety habits”. Habits that you do over and over until they override your former unsafe behaviour and become automated. Habits such as, wearing gloves, glasses, proper foot wear, safety harness on and ready to tie off, face shield when grinding, removing tripping hazards, attending safety meetings and paying attention, using seat belts, tying off a ladder, etc.

It is human nature to experience complacency in our personal lives and at our jobs. The key to warding off negative consequences is to be cognizant of its existence and the measures we can take to offset the potential for danger.

There is an old saying that says “familiarity breeds contempt”. To paraphrase, one could say, familiarity breeds complacency. Let’s work in a manner that we ensure we do not fall into the complacency trap.

Ray Cantwell, a water engineer and project technologist in our Toronto

office, was named the recipient of the 2015 Austin F. McCormack Award

by the American Water Works Association (AWWA).

Formerly known as the Young Professional of the Year Award, the award

is named after Austin Francis McCormack Jr., an AWWA life time member

and pioneer in membrane technologies, and recognizes and honours

young professionals for their outstanding contributions in water

reliability, water quality, new directions in water treatment technologies,

or membrane applications.

“As a student and into the early years of his career, Ray has always

displayed a passion for water treatment and simplifying technologies in a

manner that could be applied universally through the world to

communities in need,” said Jesus Garcia-Aleman/TOR, CH2M Regional

Service Leader Drinking Water and Reuse. “As Ray grew as a consultant

with increasing job responsibilities, business acumen, and broader

technical expertise, he has become a valuable technical resource for

CH2M and our wide range of municipal clients in the application of water

treatment and membrane technologies.”

Ray has contributed on many significant projects for our Canadian clients,

including assisting dozens of clients in Alberta, Manitoba, and Ontario

with optimization of their chemically assisted filtration plants and

supporting several contracts for the Lakeview capital expansion program.

“I was surprised and thrilled to be selected for this award - it is quite an

honour,” said Ray Cantwell/TOR. “This award reinforces to me the quality

of work we do at CH2M and could easily be shared with many of the

co-workers and mentors I have had over the years.”

Before joining CH2M, Ray and his wife moved to Cambodia to work for

Samaritan’s Purse Canada working in a variety of roles, including Regional

Manager of Asia. Ray was responsible for managing a $1.3 million portfolio

of nine partners in five Southeast Asian countries for the implementation

of 14,000 household BioSand filters, hygiene training and 2,000 latrines

per year. Ray and his family have returned to Cambodia for a one year

assignment to help improve water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions in

small communities and institutions, as well as continue work on the

household program.

Ray’s consulting engineering experience dealing with design,

rehabilitation, operation and maintenance of water treatment facilities

has equipped him well to bring innovation to long standing barriers to

sustainable access to safe water, hand washing facilities, and improved

sanitation.

“Since my first year of University I have wanted to work in the water

industry and help provide a reliable supply of safe drinking water to

Canada and the world. I have been quite fortunate in my career so far to

work with a series of great mentors on a variety of interesting and

challenging projects. My thanks to AWWA and AMTA for this award,” said

Ray.

The award was presented at this year’s Membrane Technology

Conference, March 2-6, jointly hosted by AWWA and the American

Membrane Technology Association (AMTA). This marks the second year

in a row that young professionals from CH2M have been honoured with

this award. Michael Hwang/PHX received the award in 2014.

Congratulations, Ray, on this well-deserved achievement!

Partnering with PembinaSince 2013, Pembina Pipeline Corporation has partnered with CH2M’s Vancouver and Denver pipeline groups to design a 500-kilometre Phase III pipeline expansion worth approximately $1 billion to transport hydrocarbon liquids from Northeastern British Columbia across Alberta. The major expansion will help Pembina — whose pipelines transport nearly half of Alberta’s crude and a third of Western Canada’s natural gas liquids — to better meet the growing needs of its customers.

So how did our rewarding relationship begin? In 2013, a previous pipeline client recommended CH2M to a project manager at Pembina, who contacted Business Development Director, Bob Prasad. Following the initial endorsement the team received a request for proposal (RFP) for Pembina’s Echo Pipeline front-end engineering design (FEED) study. Through the RFP, an interview session, and meetings with Pembina Vice President, Mike Massecar, the team demonstrated the strength of CH2M’s unique delivery model, proving that it was possible to do pipeline engineering work outside of Alberta. In fact, CH2M has been successfully executing major pipeline projects from our Vancouver and Denver offices, in tandem, since 2008.

At the Echo Pipeline project kick-off meeting, Pembina requested that the team also take on fast-track detailed design on a 60-kilometre portion of the pipeline – which required immediate staffing and had a tight timeline of three months. As a means of managing client expectations and to ensure quality in delivery, the Denver team was engaged and gladly accepted the opportunity.

Since those early days, CH2M and Pembina have established a collaborative and trusting relationship, which has strengthened with each project milestone that has been successfully met along the way. The rapport between executives through to project staff continues to grow and has led to CH2M being given the opportunity of becoming Pembina’s preferred pipeline engineering provider, delivering all pipeline spreads of the Echo Phase III Expansion Project.

Page 7: CH2M HILL Newsletter - Northern Lights - May 2015

The current project execution model has two teams working on Pembina’s pipeline projects, providing full detail design engineering services, often on an accelerated schedule. The west portion of the Phase III Expansion Projects is being performed in Vancouver with a team of 40 people, while approximately 60 staff execute the east portion in Denver.

Dean Palin, Senior Project Manager in Pembina’s Major Projects Unit, was one of four client panelists who participated in CH2M’s Global Sales Summit this past January; offering his take on why the relationship has been so successful. “It has been an absolute pleasure working with and for Pembina Pipelines over the past two years. We have developed a genuine relationship based on mutual trust and understanding that helps us consistently deliver successful projects,” comments Bob Prasad.

Bassam Abukhodair, CH2M Project Manager, Pembina Eastern Pipeline Spread and Alex Calles, CH2M Project Manager, Pembina Western Pipeline Spread agree that having a client such as Pembina who trusts the process contributes largely to the project’s success.

While the pipeline groups in these two offices have been linked for the better part of a decade, working concurrently for Pembina has strengthened their ties and fostered valuable working relationships, and many friendships.

Please tell us about your company’s experience designing oil terminals.CH2M has completed numerous projects for Trans Mountain over our many years of operation and we enjoy a very successful ongoing client/consultant relationship. Our work with Trans Mountain represents a significant source (approximately 15 per cent) of the total for our Burnaby-based operations.

What work are you carrying out for Trans Mountain Expansion Project? We are working on the preliminary stages of the engineering design for a major portion of the Trans Mountain Expansion Project (TMEP). Our work is focused on the three Trans Mountain terminals in the Lower Mainland — Sumas, Burnaby and Westridge.

One important part of the preliminary design work is the completion of Hazards and Operability (HazOp) Assessments for the new expanded terminal facilities. These are formalized and systematic operational functionality and safety reviews by a team of professional engineers and technical experts from CH2M and from Kinder Morgan Canada (head office and local operations). To be able to complete the HazOp reviews, CH2M is developing the preliminary piping and instrumentation schematics.

Meet Paul Hatton from our Vancouver office. He is a Project Manager and Engineer who is leading CH2M’s team on the preliminary stages of the engineering design for a major portion of Kinder Morgan’s Trans-Mountain Expansion Project.

In his recent interview he demonstrates the team’s deep commitment to working alongside the client, applying best practices and innovative ways to ensure a safe and reliable pipeline.

In addition we are completing the development of the conceptual physical layouts for the terminals. We are also subcontracting geotechnical consultants, surveyors, site location services, and hydro-vac excavation services, as part of the preliminary design phase.

All of our preliminary design work has the goal of creating facility designs that are fit for purpose and provide very high levels of employee and community safety. It is also helping to provide answers to some of the Information Requests that are part of the National Energy Board hearing process for TMEP.

How do your facility designs ensure the safety of the public? There are hundreds of safety measures being incorporated into the designs for Sumas, Burnaby, and Westridge terminals. A few examples are storage tank secondary containments, redundant tank overfill protection, back-up power supplies, automated emergency shut-down systems, and fire-protection systems. CH2M’s mandate is to ensure that all of the safety measures comply with the statutory requirements for NEB regulated oil terminal facilities.

Given the terminal locations in the Lower Mainland, the possibility of seismic activity must be considered. In partnership with

geotechnical consultants specializing in seismic analysis and design, we are working to ensure that the new facilities meet the requirements of the latest seismic design standards.

Are there any new or unique elements to your facility designs? One unique feature at Westridge Marine Terminal will be a specialized vapour recovery system for ship loading. While vapour recovery systems are commonly used in ship loading, the potential higher viscosity of the crude oil does not support the vapour re-absorption approach typically used when lighter crude oil is being handled. The system being proposed for Westridge will use both cooling and compression to liquefy recovered vapours, an approach more commonly used in refinery applications. CH2M is working closely with John Zink, a world leader in vapour recovery systems to develop this hybrid system. The system could lead the way for other terminals handling higher viscosity crude oil.

Describe your job in 140 characters or less. As the Aboriginal Engagement Regulatory Team Lead in B.C., I

help clients through the Aboriginal evaluation components of

Environmental Assessment processes.

What brought you to CH2M? A friend was already working for CH2M and recommended it as a

great place to work

What five things could you not live without? Animals (I have 2 horses and 2 cats), sushi, pedicures, sweet

treats (especially cupcakes!), and the ocean.

Name one (work or life) achievement you are particularly proud of. Building peoples’ awareness of the importance of Aboriginal

issues. I love it when I see the light go on in someone’s eyes when

they understand it for the first time.

What would we find you doing in your down-time? Riding my horses, eating meals with friends, binge-watching

shows on Netflix.

What is your best career advice?Make sure you are able to feel a sense of purpose and

accomplishment in what you do. If you don’t know why you’re

doing something you won’t have anything to measure it against

when you’ve completed it.

FAQ:Why are we adopting a nickname? We are not changing our business name, but from a marketing and communications perspective, we will use a common and simplified brand name, or nickname, that nods to our founding company: CH2M.

Will we use CH2M in our contracts and proposals? CH2M operates under a number of different business names, or legal entity names, around the world. We are not changing these legal entity names at this time, and we will continue to use the appropriate legal entity name for all legal purposes such as binding contracts or proposal letters/forms, tax returns, or writing checks.

Why now?The launch of our refreshed brand was originally planned for fall of 2014, but the budget controls we put in place resulted in a schedule delay. However, we believe things

happen for a reason—and we think this is perfect timing, because this program is designed to help us address the very problems we are facing today. It’s designed to help us strengthen our ties to our key clients by galvanizing our unique culture, reinforcing our one-company identity and behaviour, and giving us the tools to interact more effectively with our clients and each other. In many ways, there is no better time to launch our refreshed brand.

How will this help me build deeper relationships with my clients? Our clients care about who we are as a company, and they care about our culture. It’s one of the biggest reasons why they want to work with us. And it’s one of the biggest reasons why people choose to work here and stay here. So to thrive, we need our people to feel deeply connected to our culture, we need our clients to feel it, and we need it to shine in our brand—which, at its best, is a reflection of culture.

When will business cards and other business tools be made available? To control overhead spending, business cards, stationery, brochures and other items with our current CH2M HILL logo are not to be replaced until they are used up or need updating for reasons beyond the new logo and visual identity.

Everything you need to help you live the CH2M brand can be found in the Brand Portal on the VO.

When you get stuck or have questions, your best bet for a quick response is to post your query to Yammer Brand-Aid group.

Otherwise, contact Stephanie Robertson/CGY.
