From the Managing Director:In past issues of Northern Lights, I typically complete my message by saying ‘thank you’ for your hard work and dedication to CH2M HILL and our clients. However, this time, I would like to begin by extending a most sincere ‘thank you’ to all of you for the way in which you have continued to make your projects, and each other, a priority during these difficult times.
The path to growth and success is not always smooth, but my experience has shown me that with challenging times comes great opportunity. We have been given the opportunity to reevaluate current practices, processes and assumptions, and the opportunity to re-focus our long-term vision and strategy to ensure sustainability as a company. We must not take these opportunities for granted, but rather embrace what will lead to remarkable improvements.
As a team, we have accomplished a lot this year and should continue to hold our heads high. I look forward to all that 2015 has in store for our Region as I know we have the right people in place to achieve great things.
Sincerely,
Tom Searle
Regional Managing Director, Canada

The awards keep rolling in for our Canadian Museum for Human Rights project that opened in Winnipeg, Manitoba this fall .
The project earned two more big ones at the Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards in Ottawa -- an Award of Excellence and the Schreyer Award, the program’s top award presented to “a project that best demonstrates technical excellence and innovation.”
The Awards are presented by the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies – Canada (ACEC) and Canadian Consulting Engineer magazine, recognizing consulting engineering firms across Canada for their work on complex engineering projects that enrich our society, the economy and the environment . CH2M HILL provided structural engineering for the project . Structural engineer Neb Erakovic of our Toronto office picked up the latest awards at the October 23 awards dinner .
Canadian Consulting Engineer called the $351 million building “an iconic symbol of Canada – a magnificent and unique
structure, and an inspiring place for the human rights debate.”
“What an extraordinary edifice this is, and how skilled are its structural engineers at CH2M HILL!” added the magazine’s Editor Bronwen Parsons .
One of the award program’s jurors wrote “The Museum is a remarkable achievement, both because of its elegant architecture but also its technical complexity. We selected if for the Schreyer Award, recognizing that it was precise engineering and complex computer modeling by the structural engineers that made the building possible.”
The CH2M HILL team applied a lot of design ingenuity, supported by Building Informational Modeling (BIM) and 3D visualization tools, to overcome a flurry of unconventional structural challenges such as large column-free spaces, irregular load paths, long spans and unorthodox cantilevers. Effective planning and use of 3-D modeling led to what Neb Erakovic called “the easiest complicated job” that he has ever done .
The museum’s structural design has garnered other local and international awards including a Canadian Institute of Steel Construction Award and a Canadian Consulting Engineering Award. The building was also named Engineering News-Record magazine’s Global Best Cultural Project . The building has even been honoured with its own stamp issued by Canada Post .
“This was by far the most complex project I have ever undertaken,” said Neb. “The challenge was that there wasn’t one typical column or beam used, every single piece – no matter how small – was custom.”
“We are extremely proud of Neb and our Toronto structural team for this innovative and stunning structural design,” said Michelle Stradford, VP & Regional Market Manager . “The local and international acclaim is well deserved and is an excellent testament of the talented professionals at CH2M HILL.”
Here’s a link to the Canadian Consulting Engineer article on the building’s Schreyer Award (the article starts on page 22).

ATCO Pipelines Applauds TERA, a CH2M HILL Company “The quality of our services is of paramount importance. We must do a
much better job than our competition in solving clients’ problems if we are to succeed.” The TERA Sector’s Elbow River Remediation team is an embodiment of this anecdote from the firm’s Little Yellow Book. An email from the client, ATCO Pipelines praised the team and Project Manager Dayna Solmie, “The timelines were tight with all indications suggesting that the project would not meet deadlines given the regulatory approvals required. Dayna was more than willing to try anyway and her vigilant, detail oriented approach to project management proved to be an invaluable asset to what ended up being an overwhelmingly successful project.”

Recent floods left about six meters of a natural gas pipeline in the Elbow River exposed. With hiking and biking paths, foot bridges, drinking water sources, and natural habitats surrounding the exposed pipeline, remediation efforts were not only sensitive and challenging, but urgent as well. The pipeline flood recovery project for ATCO Pipelines in Calgary’s Weaselhead Natural Area consisted of isolated instream construction of a berm requiring extensive behind the scenes planning. Greg Eisler, a senior aquatics biologist at TERA was instrumental in working on an expedited approval process put in place by Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (AESRD) for flood remediation projects. The team worked on regulatory assessments including blocking and shoring up of swallow habitats to avoid nests being trapped in the berm, fish and fish habitat assessments, water quality monitoring, and riparian revegetation planning. Our team worked tirelessly on an expedited timeline to meet the requirements of the City of Calgary, Species at Risk Act, Migratory Birds Convention Act, Historical Resources Act, AESRD and Environment Canada.
“All of the environmental protection measures within the Environmental Protection Plan prepared by TERA were implemented by ATCO through an environmental inspector . As a result of these measures, the construction contractor, Farlinger and Associates, won an award from the Alberta Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association recognizing them for upgrading their operations in a way that respects or enhances the environment,” shared Dayna Solmie. TERA also nominated ATCO Pipelines for a Construction Engineers of Alberta award for environmental stewardship and awareness to be announced in February 2015 .
Congratulations to Dayna Solmie, Greg Eisler, Janice Skiffington, Dave Evans, Erin Fulcher, Erin Crawford, Justin Post, Karly Harker, David Novak, and the rest of the ATCO Pipelines Elbow River Remediation Project team for their great work resulting in a delighted client and recognition of excellence.

Lakeview Water Treatment Plant Sets New Standard
The concept of “going to work” can be understood in an infinite number of ways, making it difficult for school-aged children to grasp and complicated for parents to explain. In an attempt to de-mystify our professions and give our kids the opportunity to see for themselves how we spend our days, CH2M HILL brought their grade nine children to work on November 5th as part of Canada's "Take Our Kids to Work" program .
The young students participated in activities such as tours, demonstrations, presentations, lunch and to get a real sense of what it is we do at CH2M HILL – two students in our CGY office tagged along with their dads to a client meeting at Suncor.
Thank you to those who organized the events to ensure the day was not only valuable, but also memorable!
Take your Kid to Work Day!
The Region of Peel supplies water to over 1 .3 million users in the Greater Toronto Area and neighbouring municipalities. In 2002, the Region initiated a 12-year, $450 million dollar capital expansion program to increase capacity to 1,200 million litres per day (ML/d) with space for an ultimate capacity of 2,000 ML/d. The program included 14 separate contracts and two 400 ML/d treatment facilities (OBM1 and OBM2). OBM2 was substantially completed on September 2014 at a total capital cost of $170 million ($0.4 per litre).
Technical Innovation and Sustainability The OBM2 facility was designed using 3D software which reduced the plant footprint, allowing the preservation of adjacent green spaces and the continued use of nearby public sport fields during and after construction. The process does not use a coagulant which reduces chemical deliveries and process residuals by 95% . The facility uses natural lighting extensively, reducing energy requirements. Equipment noise and chemical fumes are managed within the open concept layout, significantly improving costs while providing a safe work environment. Excess heat from equipment is re-used to reduce the energy required to heat the building.
Level of Complexity and Project Challenges During the 12-year program, the scope and duration of the 14 construction contracts had to be balanced against site operational needs, water demands, and simultaneous construction projects requiring 100-150 site staff during peak periods . A site team of 12 CH2M HILL engineers managed construction, I&C/SCADA integration, and commissioning activities to realize schedule and cost gains proactively.
CH2M HILL provided services for environmental assessment, permitting, design, procurement, contract administration, construction management and inspection, SCADA programming and integration, commissioning and startup, and operational support.

Genevieve Roy/OTT
Describe your job in 140 characters or less.
I manage design teams and projects. I deliver projects
through a shared vision, team cooperation, application of
appropriate processes and rigorously managing scope and
risk. I really enjoy enabling a project team to deliver to their
full potential.
What is your favorite CH2M HILL memory?
I have recently relocated to Ottawa from Melbourne,
Australia, where I spent the last 8 years working for a large
employee-owned engineering consultancy delivering projects
for water and heavy industrial clients.
Joining CH2M HILL was an easy choice given the
organization’s values and their reputation for doing great
work.
What five things could you not live without?
1. Family
2. Keeping fit
3. Travelling the world
4. Cottage life
5. Cats and pasta are tied for 5th place…
Name one (work or life) achievement you are
particularly proud of.
As the design manager I led the team that successfully
delivered $2.6M of detailed engineering in 12 months for the
$55M wastewater upgrade project at Melbourne's Eastern
Treatment Plant in 2010.
Some of the challenges included a team spread across
three offices in Australia and New-Zealand and construction
tailgating design.
The new facility was commissioned in 2012 and the client
describes the project as a success.
What a thrill!
What would we find you doing in your down-time?
Outside of work, I enjoy paddling, be it dragon boats,
outrigger canoes or stand up paddle boards. I also enjoy
revamping furniture and travelling off the beaten track.
What is your best career advice?
Operate outside your comfort zone – it’s great way to learn,
grow and progress to the next stage of your career.
