From the Editor’s Desk: In these days of economic upheaval, Canadians are grateful for the
relative strength of our economy and our ability to weather global
changes. This economic strength presents opportunities for CH2M HILL
Canada to assist both public and private clients with an array of projects.
Recently, our team welcomed International Division President Jacque
Hinman who visited the Toronto office, meeting with staff and clients and
sharing her perspective on CH2M HILL’s global experience on programs
such as the 2012 London Olympics, the Panama Canal Expansion, and
the Mumbai International Airport Expansion. Also in this issue, we unveil
the results of the CH2M HILL Global Engineering Scholarship and profile
some award-winning projects delivered in Canada.
Stay strong,

After being used for storage since its completion and the subsequent market collapse in 2008, CH2M HILL’s 25 acre module construction yard in Edmonton, Alberta is back with a vengeance.
A team of 40 has been busy building 25 modules, including 5 kilometers of piping, on the site for Statoil. These modules will be used at oil sands project sites and include modules for well pads, steam debottlenecking at a processing facility, and liquid discharge reduction. The work started in December and all projects are expected to be completed by the end of July.
Modular construction allows much of a facility to be built in parts at one location; those parts are then shipped and assembled at the project site. Think of it as a very large, multi-million dollar Lego® set.
The area surrounding Fort McMurray, Alberta is where many of the oil sands projects are located. The challenge is that those sites are 450 to 500 km away from the nearest major population center. Building entire processing facilities on site is incredibly expensive, making modular construction the only economically viable option.
“Having a modular construction yard is a huge advantage for CH2M HILL as we seek to win more EPC work in Canada,” said Michael Terlaan, project and facility manager at the yard. “Because of the skills of our team and our work with Statoil, we are well positioned to grow our modular business and help win larger projects.”

International division president Jacque Hinman recently visited Toronto for a chock-a-block three day tour. While there, she met with clients, staff and government officials including Ontario’s Premier Kathleen Wynne.
“Canada is a Priority country for the firm,” said Hinman. “There is tremendous activity and potential in Canada and I’m very pleased to be here.”
Accompanied by the region’s managing director Tom Searle, Jacque kicked off
her tour by meeting with Infrastructure Ontario (IO) president Bert Clark. Clark complimented our work. IO is a client to ESBG, TBG and Yolles.
Later, Jacque met with Toronto Port Lands Company (TPLC) president Michael Kraljevic. Reporting to the City of Toronto, TPLC manages over 400 acres of port lands. Much of this prime real estate is slated for redevelopment and provides a significant business opportunity. Jacque then met with the PanAm games ministry. Tim Casey, Assistant Deputy
Minister for Infrastructure Delivery was very interested in our experience in the London Olympics.
From there, it was off to the Toronto office where she spent time with the Women’s Network. Over 100 colleagues participated in an hour-long inspirational session. Jacque was then briefed by WBG’s FMT and closed the office visit with a well attended Town Hall. But her day wasn’t over just yet. Fighting rush-hour traffic, Jacque attended a private meeting with Ontario’s new

premier Kathleen Wynne. The premier spoke highly of our work and of TBG’s involvement with the Toronto Board of Trade’s infrastructure renewal campaign. She closed the evening by meeting with Toronto’s leadership team.
The following day, Jacque delivered a speech to a sold out crowd at the Toronto Region Board of Trade. Audience members included clients from the City of Toronto, Regions of Halton and Peel, MetroLinx, Waterfront Toronto, TPLC
and IO. The speech, Lesson Learnt in Delivering Mega-Infrastructure Projects, highlighted our international projects including the London Olympics and the upcoming Qatar FIFA world cup. PanAm games senior vice president of Infrastructure Murray Noble, and senior vice president of Operations Allen Vansen listened intently.
“Highly impressive” and “fabulous” were some of the comments from audience members. Jacque closed the visit with
a client and staff one-on-one and an interview with Canadian Construction news.
“I greatly enjoy visiting Canada. The quality of our people, the energy, and the breadth of opportunities is exciting,” she added “I look forward to working with our Canadian team to continue our growth and provide great opportunities for our talented Canadian staff”.

While our colleagues in more temperate climes may wail over the prospect of visiting Canadian offices during Winter, our staff know the joys of “the white stuff”. Peter Mallory/OTT and his family took full advantage of a recent snowstorm that provided the perfect consistency of heavy, wet snow.
Daughter Anna and son Benjamin joined Peter in the Design-Build of the structure. With a 7 foot diameter and 7 foot interior height, the igloo proved to have just enough room for an overnight stay for the three builders. Though a recent mild spell meant the igloo was a short-lived addition, a reporter from The Ottawa Citizen captured the moment in an article the next day.

The Results Are In!!!CH2M HILL Global Engineering Scholarship Program
In September 2012, CH2M HILL Canada partnered with Engineers Without Borders Canada to present a pilot scholarship program – the CH2M HILL Global Engineering Scholarship. Targeted to university students in Engineering in British Columbia or Alberta, the program sought to encourage broader thinking around the role of engineers in solving society’s most difficult global issues.
Using video as the medium, students were asked to create a 3-5 minute response to the following question:
"Systems thinking requires a holistic approach in order to tackle complex social problems. Through this lens, address a challenge that will face your community within the next decade whose solution must reach beyond technical engineering.”
Submissions were to be posted to YouTube and entries made via the program website gescholarship2012.ewb.ca/
Scholarship prizes worth $5,000 (1st place), $3,500 (2nd place), and $1,500 (3rd place) were awarded.
The awards took place on January 12th as a part of EWB Canada's National Conference 2013 hosted in Calgary, Alberta. The EWB National Conference brought together 700 students and professionals from across Canada, for challenging and exciting discussions on international development, systemic change, and EWB's role in creating a world free of extreme poverty.
Judges included Tom Searle (President, CH2M HILL Canada), Lance Ubell (Director of Engineering, Construction and Completion, Statoil Canada Ltd.), and Dr. Guy Gendron (Dean, Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary). Submissions were judged on problem definition, overall solution, originality and presentation, and articulation of response.
To learn more about EWB, please contact your local EWB representative. If you are unsure who

Coordinated byFriday, March 22 was United Nations’ World Water Day. First celebrated in 1993, World Water Day provides a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources, a topic near and dear to CH2M HILL’s heart. This year’s theme is international water cooperation, which stresses the importance of working across boundaries to preserve, protect and provide water.
CH2M HILL staffers celebrated the day by wearing blue in honour of World Water Day and sharing photos. Surf to CH2M HILL’s Facebook page to check out pics of the Burlington Skyway WWTP Team including an “extended” version (featuring an adorable onesie!) and Carolyn Lee and June Garcia posing in front of reception in the Toronto office.

Describe your job in 140 characters or less. My job is to be the external face of the E&C Business group
and the internal Leader of the E&C Business Group in the
Region. I am a partner with Bob Weinschrott (Industrial Water
RBGM) in leading the integrated Energy Team that is focused
to deliver on our joint Business Group plans.
My job description is to focus on the following items:
1) Health, Safety and Environment
2) Setting Regional strategy, driving growth, profitability and
delivery excellence,
3) Accountable for Profit & Loss for the BG in the Region
I am also quickly finding out that this role is also the head of
the complaints and celebrations department.
What is your favorite CH2M HILL memory? The mentoring and coaching time I have with Tom Searle – his
insight into the enterprise, defining what success looks like
and how to get things done in CH2M HILL are of huge value
to a new leader in ur company.
What five things could you not live without? My Wife – Jackie; My two sons – Callum (13) and Owen (10);
Great food – I love cooking!; A white board (I have to draw
pictures when I talk); My PlayStation 3 – I am a bit of a gaming
nerd
Name one (work or life) achievement you are particularly proud of. Besides my marriage and the birth of our Sons, I am really
proud to have been able to have the opportunity of starting a
new life for my Family in Canada. We landed in Fort McMurray
on October 15th 2001, from South Africa, and while the first
few years were particularly tough on us, we have a great life
now and the outlook on the future for the kids is just fantastic.
Hobbies/interests? Over the last few years I have been qualified to race my street
vehicle (a Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder) at the local race track. I
was disappointed when the track closed last year, needless
to say my wife is much happier now and has instructed me to
start playing golf!
If asked for your best career advice, what would you tell a friend? My advice (whether to a friend or someone I am mentoring)
is based on a couple of things that profoundly changed my
career. These are as follows:
1) Take time and seek direct feedback to get to know
yourself and how you work best – I call this “looking in the
mirror”. This was one of the hardest things for me to learn
to do, but has provided the largest change and growth for
me personally (at work and at home)
2) Look for work and positions that are out of your comfort
zone and take you as close to the work face (where
the assets we design are constructed and operated)
as possible. This was another one of the single biggest
sources of personal growth for me and I was fortunate
to spend the better part of 15 years directly involved with
field work and construction.
