From the Editor’s Desk: Welcome to our Back-to-School issue. While the hazy, lazy days

of summer are past, we’re looking ahead to a productive year.

And productive is the theme for this issue. Whether it’s a garden in

southwestern Ontario, a new CH2M HILL-sponsored engineering

scholarship, or some of Canada’s biggest infrastructure projects, we’re

growing, encouraging, and building it.

Safety is a core value at CH2M HILL and that extends to our friends and

family. And as school starts up again and we change our routines at

home and at work, we encourage you to make safety a priority.

And, as always, if you have a suggestion for a story, please contact any

of the Northern Lights Team.

Stay classy,

Pauline

Produce update: Today I delivered 45 pounds of carrots and a combination of carrots, tomatoes, peppers and beans that weighed in at 25 pounds!! AWESOME! That’s a total of 70 lbs today, and a Grand Total of 474 lbs to date!!!! I’d say we’re doing GREAT!

I helped bag the carrots into smaller portions in produce bags for the families and was present when a few families went through ... They seem quite excited to have our fresh produce! Another great thing I took note on: the Contact House isn’t charging these families “points” for our donated produce, which is nice because that means they can use their points for other products and still have fresh veggies for supper!!

In the small communities in the Municipality of Lambton Shores in southwestern Ontario, the staff members of the OMBG do more than operate water and wastewater treatment plants – they are feeding people in need. OMBG staff are teaming up with the municipality and Forest Contact House (operating the local food bank) to participate in a local “Grow-A-Row” effort. With donations from the municipality and local businesses – and plenty of hard work, OMBG staff have turned a ½ acre of land at the Arkona Wastewater Treatment Plant into a burgeoning vegetable garden.

An article in the Forest Standard noted: “Each week, fresh produce is trucked to Contact House in Forest, where volunteers gratefully accept the donations

to help the area’s growing number of hungry families. … When it came to getting the ½ acre garden started, it was definitely a team effort. [CH2M HILL] received the full support of the Municipality of Lambton Shores, who helped provide compost and mulch for the garden. As well, Arkona Home Hardware donated the seeds to get the garden started.

From the beginning, the focus of the project was to help provide Contact House with fresh vegetables.

The gardening team includes Rick Marsh, Shane Burley, Candace Tidball, Natasha Vaessen, Stewart Turner, Connie Garrison, Shawn Young, Dale Wright, and Peter Mennen, who have all given their time and effort to make the Grow-A-Row program a success.”

Anthony Henday Drive Stony Plain Road The Anthony Henday Drive and Stony Plain Road/100 Avenue Interchange

(AHDSPR) Design Build (DB) project, opened to traffi c in 2011, is located

between the Canadian National Railway Edson Subdivision and Whitemud

Drive in Edmonton, Alberta, and includes the interchange with Stony Plain

Road and 100 Avenue West.

Port Mann/Highway 1 The PMH1 project includes widening Highway 1, replacing the existing

5-lane Port Mann Bridge across the Fraser River with a 10-lane structure,

upgrading 17 interchanges, and improving municipal streets crossing

the corridor, new cycling and park-and-ride facilities, as well as a fully

electronic “open-road” tolling system.

Lambton Shores – Operations CH2M HILL provides water system and wastewater treatment plant (WWTP)

operations and maintenance (O&M) services to the Municipality of Lambton

Shores. The activated sludge wastewater plant contains extended aeration,

secondary and tertiary treatment technologies, as well as ultraviolet (UV)

disinfection. CH2M HILL staff perform laboratory analysis, meter reading,

sludge management, and collection system O&M services. Our staff are

also responsible for managing, operating and maintaining a sizeable

regional water system that takes treated water from the Lake Huron

Regional WTP just north of Grand Bend (also the primary supply for the City of London) and distributes it to multiple communities in

the area. Six employees serve a population of 10,000.

Kitchener Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade The Region of Waterloo is upgrading its wastewater and

biosolids treatment facilities. Current projects include

converting the disinfection process at the Kitchener WWTP

from chlorination to Ultra Violet (UV) irradiation. The upgrade

provides centrate treatment and improved ammonia

treatment and will help manage the high-ammonia centrate

which otherwise would increase the ammonia content of

the effl uent from the Kitchener WWTP and increase the contaminant load on the Grand River. The project also implements a modern

SCADA system at the facilities, while providing for integration of other existing and future facilities. In addition, it will examine site-wide

power issues to prepare for subsequent stages of the Kitchener WWTP Upgrades, and to provide the framework for an overall power

distribution confi guration that meets the Region’s current and future needs.

Lakeview Water Treatment Plant Expansion The Region of Peel serves over 1 million consumers in the

Greater Toronto area. The Lakeview water treatment plant

expansion project is a key component of the Region of Peel’s

Master Servicing Plan for Water and Wastewater, which

includes expanding and upgrading treatment capacity in

multiple plants and constructing additional water distribution

pipelines, pump stations, and storage reservoirs. CH2M HILL

has designed all major infrastructure at Lakeview since it began in 1954 as a two-fi lter, 16.3 ML/d facility for the Toronto Township. The

Phase I Expansion Program, completed in 2007, increased plant capacity by 397 ML/d and included an 8 million gallon reservoir, high

lift pumping station, and an advanced treatment process. In 2008, CH2M HILL commenced work on the Phase II Expansion Program,

which will increase the treatment capacity to 919 ML/d and include a master plan for future expansions. The Phase II expansion is

scheduled for completion in 2014.

Project s that help our communities maintain a high quality of life.

It’s work we can all be proud of.

Teleworking is the concept of working from home either on a full-time or part-time basis. It is a fl exible work approach that helps us attract and retain a diverse employee population and reduce company costs. Under the right circumstances, teleworking is a win/win for the company and the employee. And teleworking supports our Environmental Management System (EMS) and Target Zero Environmental Stewardship greening initiatives.

Teleworking emphasizes our commitment to lowering overhead costs. Full-time teleworkers are not counted in the cost/seat allocations that business groups pay for each year. The average allocation cost per person in 2012 is $11,412. Part-time teleworkers are paid for at half the allocation, further reducing overhead costs. Teleworking benefi ts staff as well, with reduced commute time, lower travel costs, and greater fl exibility.

How Do I Get Started with Teleworking? All CH2M HILL employees are eligible to apply for this arrangement. However, not all jobs are suited for telework nor are all employees. This is not a casual work arrangement and it requires a minimum 12-month commitment from both the employee and their supervisor.

CH2M HILL is pleased to be able to offer this voluntary alternative work arrangement to employees. Here’s how to get started with teleworking.

1. Complete the Teleworker Assessment to determine suitability of your position for teleworking. https://communities.int.ch2m.com/facilities/public/Teleworking/TELEWORKER%20SELF%20ASSESSMENT.doc

2. Discuss teleworking with your supervisor and get approval.

3. Contact Sue Dober/EDM, Regional Telework Coordinator for Canada, to get set up for teleworking.

TELEWORKINGTeleworking By the Numbers Firm-wide, we added 213 new

teleworkers in 2011 with a total of 874 teleworkers. Total of 29 full-time teleworkers in

Canada with 27 part-time teleworkers.

Space savings due to teleworking projected at 45,870 square feet with

potential cost savings of over $3.1 million

Cross TAs our fi rm grows, we create more opportunities

in our business and we strive for innovative

ways to help develop our staff. The WBG has

created a new program to help develop Junior

and Intermediate staff to take on those exciting

opportunities. They call it “Cross-Training” because

those selected are trained across three business

areas helping them to round out their skills.

Training

Dave Olsenwho has focused on consulting, is now working on a construction site helping with an expansion to a wastewater treatment plant.

Dave’s experience has been focused on project management so a “work term” in construction will help him understand how to

design facilities for construction. “You hear terms thrown around in the offi ce and you think you know what they are but when you are

actually constructing, you really understand things in a physical way,” Dave says. “You get a lot closer to the work.” When asked what

he thinks job candidates should be looking for, Dave said “I think fl exibility of opportunities is key. Being stuck in the same role for

20 years is not exciting but at CH2M HILL, there are so many different aspects of the work – design, construction, planning, project

management … And when you get exposure to so many different things, you become a stronger employee. And understanding the

different aspects of constructing something helps you serve your clients better.”

Darrell Yong has transferred from the consulting group to Project Services. Reporting to a new supervisor, she is gaining experience in detailed

design. Darrell is also looking to round out her skills with new experiences. “When you are designing, it’s like creating a recipe for a

chocolate cake,” she says. “You need three cups of this and a teaspoon of this but you might never get to see what those ingredients

look like or even understand how the oven works. You can be a better chef if you understand the full process.” She likes how the Cross

Training program gives her a different perspective. “I always thought that other groups talked about the same things but the topics are

very different – the issues that they raise and the challenges they have are completely different. I am inside a different fence now and

looking at things from a different vantage point and I better understand why people do things the way they do. And access to a new

group of gurus helps me to expand my networks.”

Cross Training Program candidate Dave Olsen is now constructing a facility he helped design .

H E L L Om y n a m e i sTina Pimentel/ VBC

Describe your job in 140 characters or less.

I look after all our offices in Canada, I open

and close them, making sure that they are run

efficiently and a great place to work in – considering

staff spend more than half of their waking hours at

work!

What is your favorite CH2M HILL memory?

I have many favorite memories, but the fondest

was receiving the Front Line Leadership Excellence

Award in 2008, and sitting with Bill Dehn and Ralph

Peterson at the banquet, exchanging stories about

our dogs, children and grandchildren. It was an

“Aha” moment, chatting with two individuals who

were bigger than life for me.

What five things could you not live without?

There are so many things that help make my life

easier to manage (laptop, iphone, ipad), but I could

easily revert back to the days before internet and

computers and life would still be as challenging,

amusing and satisfying.

Name one (work or life) achievement you are particularly proud of.

Giving birth and raising 4 beautiful, grounded

and humble children, and help raising 5 beautiful,

grounded and humble grandchildren, and of course,

marrying a beautiful grounded and humble man.

Hobbies/interests?

Reading, writing and researching anything. Also

horses!

If asked for your best career advice, what would you tell a friend?

Don’t let your accomplishments feed your ego.

You won’t be successful without the help and

support of your team. Strive to be kind and humble

always, and stay away from gossip. Take a back

seat always, and let those who helped you shine.

Learn and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Look

for a mentor, and choose wisely. Mentor your

colleagues.

To Be Of ServiceAt the Night MarketToronto-based charity “The Stop Community Food Centre” held a Night Market this summer bringing together

local designers and the city’s top up-and-coming restaurants to create 27 unique food stalls. Yolles – a

CH2M HILL Company and Zeidler teamed up to create two carts using a king post truss system to support

long, thin table tops. The food and carts were donated by the restaurants and designers and the event raised

an astounding $57,000! To put this into perspective, a $50 donation to The Stop will provide a family of

four with a food hamper that will last them for three days.

Special thanks to Dan Hambleton, Dana Tessler, Dave Douglas, Jon Cohen, Matt Johnson, and Mitch Gascoyne for the long hours they spent designing and building the carts.

Comes Close at Dragon Boat Festival In June, the VBC office dragon boat team

raced in the 24th Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat

festival. Created 24 years ago as a showcase of

Vancouver’s growing cultural diversity, this first-

of-its-kind event has grown to become a grand

celebration of Canada’s unique multicultural
