Nomadic Invaders Rule Egypt• Hyksos – nomadic invaders who conquered Egypt and

ruled from 1640-1570 B.C.• Hebrews immigrated under Hyksos rule

The New Kingdom of Egypt• New Kingdom – period of Egyptian history following the

overthrow of the Hyksos from 1570-1075 B.C.• Hatshepsut – female pharaoh encouraged trade over

warfare• Thutmose III – expanded Egypt upward into Palestine and

Syria, and south into Nubia• Ramses II – declared peace with the Hittites

• Said “Peace and Brotherhood between us forever”

The New Kingdom of Egypt• Karnak

The Kushites Conquer the Nile Region

• “Sea People” attack Egypt and the Hittites, Egypt declines in power

• Nubian Kingdom of Kush controlled Egypt from 2000-1000 B.C.

• Kush was heavily influenced by Egyptian culture• Prices went to Egypt to study language and Egyptian worship• They adopted customs and clothing styles

The Kushites Conquer the Nile Region

• Piankhi – Kush emperor who conquered Egypt from the Libyan dynasty

• Assyrians conquer Egypt in 671 B.C.

The Golden Age of Meroe • Meroe – center of Kush dynasty form 250 B.C. to 150

A.D.; known for iron weapons and tools• Kushite royalty moved to Meroe after being defeated in

Egypt by the Assyrians• Kush became very wealthy because of their abundance of

iron ore
