Letter from the EditorThe Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games are drawing near and I’ve had the pleasure to learn about
a couple special events featuring some of our own central Florida horses and riders. You’ll read
about a very dedicated local dressage trainer who’s focused almost entirely on preparing Pony
Clubbers for their opportunity to perform a Quadrille & an organization most of us won’t have
known existed until now- the SPHO of FL…their President & Executive Vice President have been
invited to perform a Pas De Deux on their Standardbreds that were at one time pacers at the race
track. If you plan to visit Kentucky during the Games I hope you will have an opportunity to show
support.
Please read the tributes for the Salms, Edd Lookingbill & Denna Johnson. I know we all feel
sadness and disbelief. I did not have the pleasure of knowing the Salms except through facebook
but they touched many lives in the dressage community. Edd & Denna both have so many very
close friends here. They were both great givers & supporters in their
own ways. Their passing is a reminder that there are no guarantees- all
the clichés (“live life to the fullest”; “each day as if it were your last”, etc
;) come from wisdom and understanding, yet many of us probably only
consider the clichés at the point when we experience loss.
Make today & everyday count. Be proactive in achieving your goals.
Live, love & laugh as often as possible.

Local Standardbreds toperform a Pas De Deuxat the Alltech FEI WorldEquestrian GamesBy Debra Sweger
The Standardbred PleasureHorse Organization of FL
In 1997 I purchased my firstStandardbred mare, Belle, outof a back yard in Spring Hill, FL.She was very green , but I fellin love with the temperamentof the breed. I’ve been a horse owner since 1975 andfamiliar with Arabians, Quarterhorses, Saddlebreds andThoroughbreds, but a Standardbred had never crossed my path. I didn’t know one thing about the breed! Realizing that all horses
are individuals, I wanted to knowmore about them and educateothers. I found they date back to the1800’s. It all began when thecommon man wanted to havesome fun after he finished his chores. He raced with his neighbors in buggyraces. Soonafter, the Morgan horsecame along and made this sportpopular. But in the late 1800’s theStandardbred sire Hambeltonian, became famous for breeding ahorse that could out trot the Morganand The American Standardbredcame into existence. To date, theStandardbred is still the fastesttrotting horse in the world. The breedis bred for speed, calmtemperament and willingness. Earlyon, breeders realized they neededan intelligent horse to race at thosespeeds in a sulky. All these attributestranslate well to any discipline forpleasure. Intrigued by the thoughtof having a race horse, I locatedDebbie Button of Mims, FL, who hadjust started the StandardbredPleasure Horse Organization of FL(SPHO FL) that month! At that time,SPHO FL was part of a nationalorganization.
Myself, Debbie Button, Tracy Kent-Winter and Nancy Wisgerhoffbegan organizing the StandardbredPleasure Horse Org. of FL.
In the beginning, the organizationwas made up of equestrians likemyself, who stumbled across aStandardbred for sale at an auctionor back yard. We corresponded byemail since most of us were spreadout over the state. After somediscussion, we agreed mostequestrians were not familiar withthe breed as a riding horse and thisproblem was state-wide.
Our research revealed that Floridaonly has one race track. ManyStandardbreds are auctioned as a“grade horse” and are not calledStandardbreds. Most of these horsesfrom the track only pull a cart andare not saddle trained. We foundonly a small percentage have aracing career and the industry doesnot provide retirement homes forStandardbreds. We wanted to dosomething for the horses.
For many years SPHO FL had amatch making program. Race horseowners would contact me when ahorse was too slow to race andavailable for purchase. Many ofthese Standardbreds were younghorses that needed a secondcareer. I placed ads in variouslocations on the internet to helprace horse owners sell theirStandardbred at no cost to the racehorse owner. It’s a win-win situation:the horses got a new home and weacquired new SPHO FL members.
My work with SPHO FL is volunteerand I work as a research scientist atthe University of South FL in Tampa,FL. All of our boardmembers/officers are also volunteersand people witha heart for the Standardbred. Themembership plays a large role in theeducation of the breed and thesetrue equestrians are loyal. Theinternet is able to bridge thedistances and help make thisprogram a success.
Since many new buyers don’t havethe time to properly saddle train theirStandardbreds, or hire a trainer, Idecided to form a training program.SPHO FL acquires Standarbreds fromthe race track or training centers. They go immediately in to saddle training and dressage with one ofour trainers. All of this is possiblebecause of a one time donationmade by James Robinson to SPHOFL, Inc.
Over the years, I realized my marewas versatile. I rode in parades, huntpaces, trail rides and team penning. It became apparent that my horsealso enjoyed jumping and obstacleswere not a challenge. No one wouldever believe I was riding a racehorse. Standardbreds are not hot orprancy. Other members wereshowing in dressage! People wouldsay” a pacer can’t test indressage!!”

Natural Products
Sarcoid RemedySarcoids are the most common skintumor of the horse. They areclassified as benign but can invadelocal tissues. The underlying cause ofSarcoid tumors is the BovinePapilloma virus, a cow virus that istransferred by flies.Traditional attempts to cure include:banding with rubber rings, surgicalexcision, cryosurgery, injection withBacillus Calmette-Guérin,radioactivity and topical or injectedchemotherapy agents. While socallednatural, blood-root (zincchloride) products like Xxterra®(similar to Wort Be Gone®) exist, theyburn the sarcoid off, which isextremely painful to the horse. Plus, the hair will not grow back. Thesaddest part about these traditionaltreatments is that nothing is cured. The Bovine Papilloma virus simplytravels to other points in the bodyand returns even more aggressively.Sarcoid Cleaning Salve fromBalanced Eco Solutions is an allnatural remedy that eliminates thesarcoid and unlike the abovementioned treatments, it draws thevirus from the blood stream. There isno pain and no burning. In fact,Sarcoid Cleaning Salve is extremelysoothing, promoting normalizedtissue and hair growth.

Zip Lock Baggy & Pennies:Cheap & Natural Flyrepellent?Stacey Shinn! We went with friends to Sweety Pieson Sunday for breakfast and sat inthe patio section beside thehouse. We happened to notice ziplock baggies pinned to a post and awall. The bags were half filled withwater, each contained 4 pennies, and they were zipped shut.Naturally we were curious! Ms.Sweety told us that these baggieskept the flies away! So naturally wewere even more curious! Weactually watched some flies come inthe open window, stand around onthe window sill, and then fly outagain. And there were no flies in theeating area! This morning I checkedthis out on Google. Below arecomments on this fly control idea.I'm now a believer!
Ann Says:“I tried the ziplock bag and penniesthis weekend.. I have a horse trailer. The flies were bad while I wascamping. I put the baggie withpennies above the door of the LQ.
NOT ONE FLY came in the trailer. Thehorse trailer part had many. Not surewhy it works but it does!”
Danielle Martin Says:“Fill a ziplock bag with water and 5or 6 pennies and hang it in theproblem area. In my case it was aparticular window in my home. Ithad a slight passage way for insects.Every since I have done that, it haskept flies and wasps away. Some saythat wasps and flies mistake the bagfor some other insect nest and arethreatened.”
Maggie Says:“I swear by the plastic bag of watertrick. I have them on porch andbasement. We saw these inNortheast Mo. at an Amish grocerystore & have used them since. Theysay it works because a fly sees areflection & won't come around.”
DJ Says:“Regarding the science behind ziplog bags of water? My researchfound that the millions of moleculesof water presents its own prism effectand given that flies have a lot ofeyes, to them it's like a zillion discoballs reflecting light, colors andmovement in a dizzying manner. When you figure that flies are preyfor many other bugs, animals, birds, etc., they simply won't take the risk ofbeing around that much perceivedaction. I moved to a rural area andthought these "hillbillies" were justyanking my city boy chain but I triedit and it worked immediately! Wewent from hundreds of flies to seeingthe occasional one, but he didn'thang around long.”

Goodbyes: Edd Lookingbill and Denna L. Johnson by Sally L Harvey
Edward Ivan Lookingbill September 6, 1973-May 19, 2010:
To say, “Edd was a good horseman,”
is so understating the obvious as to be ridiculous.
Not only did he do it
right, but he inspired his students, his friends, his horses and even bystanders. Edd combined impeccable taste
and high
horsemanship standards with a
golden heart and a mercurial,
wicked wit. The words of his friends tell just a fraction of the legacy of this loving, playful,
delightful, free spirit who was like no
other:
“EDD LOOKINGBILL was such a wonderful person. He always knew how to make people laugh and smile.” (Justin Meyers)
“He gave in a momentous and passionate way. His humor, wit, intelligence and sheer sex
appeal will live on forever.”
“…For those of you who knew him, I wish you peace. For those of you who didn't, I am sorry…”(Ingrid Rockefeller)
“...You
always made me laugh no matter what.”(Lisa Marong)
“Edd you were such a good friend, partner
& mentor”
(Renee Dodd)
“Favorite Edd-isms: „Crispy? should describe potato chips, not your tack!” (Cookie Serletic)
“I'll never know why you chose me as your friend, but I hope you knew
why I chose you.”
(Zoë Hernandez) And finally: “I know wherever he is
now, Edd
is
making everyone else smile! How sad for us, but how nice for those he has gone to join!”
(The
late Denna Johnson)
Denna L. Johnson June 10, 1961-June 10, 2010:
Probably best known for her College Invitational Program which enables
college bound equestrians
of all economic backgrounds to be recruited for and to earn college riding scholarships. What some people may not know is that Denna?s life revolved around charity in action: whether it was
a troubled teenager needing help getting back
on the right track or providing free summer camp to at-risk, foster children. According to her mother, Denna knew what she wanted in the fourth grade: “I want to have 30 kids.” She achieved that and more as surrogate mother for the many children who paraded through her farm over the years.
Her love of children reached far beyond the local area. She was a huge fundraiser for St Jude?s Children?s Hospital and personally bought hundreds of Christmas presents for needy children and their families every year.
“Strong Like Bull”
was her mantra, repeated loudly,
until each of her
students found their own inner strength and developed the physical strength to ride with confidence.
Many of the children could not afford to buy fancy ponies, but many managed to show and even attend Pony Finals as a result of Denna?s unrelentless fundraisers: car washes, raffle tickets, pony rides and yard sales.
Losing these two shining stars is a great loss to Central Florida?s horse community
We will miss you Denna and Edd.

CAN YOU…Written by Thea Wilcox
Can you love me, really love meeven though I couldn’t stay
And, can you find a way to hold mesince I’ve gone away?
Can you hold me to your heartwhile I’m holding on to you
And, never ever blame yourselvesfor what you didn’t do?
Can you trust that there wasnothing you could do or seeAnd, understand the enemy
lay couched inside of me?Can you accept a simple truth;
this journey was my foeAnd, demons sought me everywhere
until I had to go?Can you empathize with the pain
tormenting my last daysAnd, would you just accept that life
is handled different ways? Can you accept I knewmy time here had to end
And, understand it had to be,my dignity I could not defend?
Can you accept this lessonIf I lay it on the line
And, tell you that a “lack of sight”is not what makes us blind?
Can you recognize the “cancer”and this cancer had no cure
And, simply know the peace I have,no trials left to endure?
Can you never come to facethe thought to end your life
And, realize that the very end islesser than your strife? Can I ask you please,
do not turn a deafened earAnd, be swept up in Satan’s lies
all built on human fear? Can you know that I’m forgiven
that the sacrifice was madeAnd, know the debt for all of us
had long ago been PAID?Can you feel my presence now
As it lingers all aroundAnd, embrace with confidencethat my soul is heaven bound?
Can you never doubt my death, though not what God had planned,
He stayed so close I heard him cry,and he gently held my hand.
Can you reach beyond your griefto the bottom of your heart
And say, “Farewell, goodbye my Edd,Your love we will impart.”
In Memory of Alice Stuebling-Salm & Rainer Salm
The couple was involved in a planecollision while flying in the Williston vicinity in March. Findthe live interview in the membersection (free):www.cfequestrian.com*Thanks to Elizabeth Patz for helpingvideo!
CW: Michael, tell us how things reallywent compared to what youenvisioned
MM: It went pretty similar to what Iexpected, although I thought thecompetition would be more stiff butit turns out that we Americans ride alot quicker- in the speed classes atleast. We won every speed classbecause we practice riding fast. Iwas the only one in the Nation’s Cupto be under the time allowed. Thebiggest thing was just being in adifferent place- not extravagant likeWellington but nice.
CW: Out of all the talent and youngriders in the US, how did you come tobe selected for such a hugeopportunity?
MM: I’m blessed and got lucky- Ithink it was largely based upon myresults this year in Palm Beach andmy horses have been jumping reallywell. I was kind of an underdog butit all worked out.
CW: What horses did you take- yourhorse and didn’t you take one ofDebbie Stephens’?
MM: Yes, I took her horse All Star- hewas a great second horse and didwell in a couple grand prix andspeed classes.
CW: Did your horses perform as youexpected?
MM: My mare (Katina 12) was a bitsensitive for the first couple days butonce she adapted to time changeand such she even better there andlearned a lot- adapting to thefooting and the atmosphere.

Congratulations Team USA:Gold in Nations Cup!Posted by Taylor LandDay 27: Team Gold6/4/10
“Today the team won gold in theNation's Cup at Wierden! Jen,Michael, Nick, and Karl finished witha score of 21 faults and jumped offfor gold with the Dutch team. Bytaking an incredibly tight cut to avertical, both Jen and Michaelposted incredibly fast times althoughthey both had four faults. After theDutch posted two slow but clearjump off rounds, the US teamthought all hope was lost. However,Nick and Karl produced two clearrounds and the Dutch team crackedunder pressure and had two rails, resulting in gold for the US! Everyonerode great and it was a wonderfulday. The team won very Dutchprizes: bikes. The seats were so highpoor Jen could not reach the pedalsand the victory lap aboard the bikesproved to be quite a challenge!Michele was ecstatic with all theriders' performances and all theAmericans felt very proud hearingthe Star Spangled Banner.”

CW: Were you nervous not knowing
what to expect?
MM: I don’t really get nervous but I
was nervous before getting on the
plane just from anticipation of what
was to come and competition but
once I got on the plane and then
landed everything was fine.
CW: Did you know the other team
members before the trip and did
everyone get along?
MM: I knew everyone except for Karl
(Cook) and yeah, it was nice- I did
get a little hazed at the end of the
week; I was running around cleaning
up the pillows and things like that.
But we all got along well; we went
out to dinner together, including the
grooms. Meredith Gallagher (Ridge
Point Stables) travelled with me to
groom.
CW: What are your plans now?Where do you go from here?
MM: We’re heading to Kentucky(Country Air) where we’ll show thenwe’ll take off a week and figure outwhat to do- we rented a place. Iknow we have a couple shows andmy main goal is to prepare forYoung Riders (NAJYRC).
CW: Any idea who will be on theteam?
MM: Nick (Dello Joio) was saying hewasn’t going to go this year butTaylor (Land) is. We won’t reallyknow as the applications aren’t all inuntil the 15th so we’ll find out soonbutI think I have a good shotbecause I’m pretty high up in orderof ranking for money won.
CW: Who’s chef d’ equipe for that?Wendy?
MM: Yeah, Wendy Ritter (Peralta) isthe chef for zone 4.
CW: You mentioned to me beforethat you’d be at the 2010 Alltech FEIWorld Equestrian Games
MM: Yeah, it’s going to be really funand of course it’s the first time it’sever been here in the US
CW: When do you plan to turn pro?
MM: Well, I have a few years left as ajunior (Mike had his 17th birthdaywhile in Europe) and I want to ridethat out for Equitation purposes. Ican ride the USET until I’m 21and canride it as a pro but I just have to seewhere it takes me. It might be bestfor me to stay on as manager andlet my mom remain the professional, but who knows. No matter what I’mgonna stay here and work for mymom.
CW: Thanks for telling us about yourtrip and we look forward to hearingmore from you in the future!

CW: How does this opportunity
position you going forward as far as
opportunities and expectations?
MM: I feel it’s really raised my level of
riding and if I have another chance
to go on a tour to Europe I’m going
to know what to expect rather than
anticipate, like how the show
managers operate, because it’s
totally different- even the course
walks are different. They don’t post
the course until you’re about to walk
into the ring. They’re very organized
though- all the classes went in one
ring and the show office staff were
all very nice to us.
CW: Who was the chef d' equipe?
MM: The first week was Ralph Caristo
and the second week was Michelle
Grubb.

Bits & Tips
First Annual Hearts forHooves Clinic at Clermark
Animals have always been a bigpart of Michelle Barrett’s life. As shetells this story a tiny kitten is sleepingon her lap, purring away. Hardly aday passes when she is not caring fora dog, a cat, a horse or some othercreature adopted into her life. As anadult she was always haunted bypictures and stories of unlovedanimals left without food or water. “Ialways wanted to help, but was putoff by the thought of witnessing thesuffering first hand - so I would justsend a check… It wasn’t enough.”
Michelle’s big New Year’s resolutionwas to become more involved. Atfirst she thought, “Ok. I can take in afew horses, maybe get them fixedup and find them new homes.Maybe someone who could nototherwise afford to buy a horsecould have the privilege of owning ahorse, if I could nurse the horse backto health and train it.” However, when she contemplated everythinginvolved, she realized she couldn’tdo it alone.
Inspiration flooded over Michellewhile driving by Sixteen Hands HorseSanctuary. She realized that insteadof duplicating their effort, she couldchannel her passion for saving horsesinto raising rescue money andsupporting local Horse Therapyprograms. “Hearts for Hooves”(name coined by friend, Lisa Weiss)was born.
On the weekend of June 5th, 2010 atClermark Equestrian Center, the FirstAnnual Hearts for Hooves RidingClinic debuted. BrockClermark donated the use of hisbrand-new, state-of-the-art facility. This was HUGE! Brock’s generosityencouraged other people andbusinesses to join in. Manylocal trainers came together anddonated free lessons.Several rescue and therapy groupstalked about the different programsthey offer: A special guest speakerwas Melanie Foster-Bowles of ProudSpirit Horse Sanctuary in Mena,Arkansas The heartfelt generosity from Brockand all who helped is much
