SPECIAL HIGHLIGHTS5G5G is a key ingredient technology that will power the data age of consumer tech and was a major narrative at CES Asia. Developments are underway in Asia to roll out early 5G networks by 2020 and sooner, as in the case of China. Just days before the opening of CES Asia, on June 6, 2019, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology officially issued 5G commercial licenses to China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom and China Broadcast Network. The licensing was a clear sign that China had officially started the commercial implementation of 5G—one year ahead of the original national plan.

Most early 5G initiatives start with enhanced mobile broadband (a consumer focus) but as 5G networks grow and fully develop over the next several years 5G will become the first wireless generation led by the enterprise. 5G’s ability to transtmit vast amounts of data with low latency will open a host of enterprise applications, enabling new smart cities to flourish and realizing the Intelligence of Things in factories, hospitals, agriculture, public sector, construction and much more. Virtually every facet of the economy will eventually be impacted by 5G. As a result, 5G will create altogether new partnerships and alliances among business entities as they seek to implement new services and solutions leveraging the power of the 5G network.

Artificial IntelligenceArtificial intelligence is another key ingredient technology and a global trend shaping the new IoT—Intelligence of Things. AI is automating tasks across commercial and industrial use cases, bringing consumers greater convenience through digital assistants and changing the way we interact with technology through voice recognition. At CES Asia 2019 we witnessed several companies using AI innovations to develop and market new products and services.

On the show floor, we observed AI deployed across more everyday applications, promising impressive experiences for consumers. And through voice activated digital assistants, Asian consumers (especially in China) are gaining experience and comfort with AI.

AutomotiveWith concept cars, connected vehicles, self-driving technologies and all-electric vehicles from automotive manufacturers like Nissan, Volkswagen, Audi, Hyundai, Bose and Kia, CES Asia hosts more OEMs than any other technology show in Asia. In 2019, two out of six exhibit halls were dedicated to new vehicle technologies promising to make cars safer and greener. The strong automotive and vehicle technology presence at CES Asia underscores the vibrancy of the vehicle market in China, where we are starting to see the first commercial deployments of self-driving vehicles take to the streets. New Electric Vehicles (NEVs) are another example of how the new quickly becomes the normal in China. In 2018, new vehicle sales in China dipped (-2.8%) for the first time; however, sales of electric vehicles accelerated nearly 62% to 1.3 million cars.

KEY OBSERVATIONS

5GThe 5G wave is surging in China and CES Asia echoed the budding enthusiasm surrounding this key ingredient technology that will eventually overlay the entire Chinese economy—not just consumer devices. However, it will take several years to fully develop the 5G network. Therefore, dual-mode devices that seamlessly operate between 4G and 5G networks are useful.

Huawei demonstrated several 5G devices with dual-mode features, among them different kinds of “hubs” that can change the way we access the Internet. The Huawei CPE (Customer Premise Equipment) Pro is a stationary router that converts 5G signals into Wi-Fi signals by using a 5G

SIM card. The router features Huawei’s Balong 5000 5G multimode modem chipset that also supports 4G connectivity in case a 5G signal is not available. Users can connect to the Huawei CPE Pro directly with their smartphones, laptops, tablets or other wireless devices. Huawei also showcased a dual-mode smartphone, also using the Balong 5000 modem chipset, enabling consumers to navigate the 5G world without changing mobile phones. Huawei’s Mate 20 X, the company’s first SA/NSA dual 5G smartphone recently went on sale in China, Italy and the UAE.

But 5G is much more than just mobile broadband. With its expanded capacity and lower latency, 5G networks will be instrumental in expanding the scope of the Internet

of Things (IoT) in a B2B context, bringing forward new platforms, applications and services.

CES Asia showcased several examples of 5G applications across different economic sectors. Retail technology was one 5G use case on display. China’s largest technology product retailer, Suning, together with China Unicom, set up a 5G smart retail lab called Suning Wisdom Store to create opportunity for new 5G retail technology. Enabled by 5G, the Suning and China Unicom collaboration will empower Suning in three areas: 1) by further empowering the retail scenario design in store, 2) by providing each consumer with more accurate and prompt service and 3) by creating a C2M (customer to manufacturing) business model that develops smart devices collaboratively. CES Asia also offered a view to 5G applications in transportation and mobility services through self-driving vehicles and other connected vehicle solutions. With its fast speeds and near-zero latency, 5G offers a range of benefits beyond today’s 4G networks. With the support of 5G, V2X (vehicle to everything) communications will be truly possible—paving the road for the deployment of self-driving vehicle fleets for package deliveries or robo-taxis as part of new Automated Mobility as a Service (AMaaS) solutions.

Almost all connected mobility solutions at CES Asia 2019 were designed with an eye toward 5G networks, as seen in Audi’s V2X technology, which demonstrated data transmission between vehicles (V2V) and vehicles and infrastructure (V2I). This is a feasible application for how 5G will operate relative to transportation solutions in a smart city context. Meanwhile, Baidu’s Apollo (an open software platform for developing self-driving systems) was featured on Great Wall’s H6, representing another 5G enabled vehicle OS that lets consumers shop, watch entertainment content and interact with social media in the car. Here again, we got a view of future in-car applications that will be possible with 5G.

AIArtificial Intelligence (AI) in the form of machine learning has been applied in the commercial and industrial domain for many years to automate or enhance processes, but today this type of AI is increasingly deployed to enhance user experience in the consumer technology space. At CES Asia 2019, a host of intelligent technology devices were on display delivering enhanced capabilities and functionality that add up to previously unimagined experiences.

the lenses, making them lighter and less obtrusive. CES Asia exhibitor Quic-Mo provided an example of the expanding industry of AR-based services. Quic-Mo is an interactive portal that offers visual guidance but goes beyond simple navigation by including location-based services (LBS) and even a social element. Quic-Mo claims its service helps users get oriented in a given area faster and get services much easily. Users can easily interact with surrounding scenes through smart phones or AR glasses to access location information reducing the stress of being in an unfamiliar area. Moreover, users can securely interact with each other on the Quic-Mo platform enabling them to easily find one another and meet-up. With the help of 5G, Quic-Mo also solves the limitations of stand-alone AR, allowing the AR to incorporate multiple people at the same time. Through

its interactive portal based on visual guidance, Quic-Mo supports long-distance interaction, a reliable security authentication mechanism, and enhanced LBS offerings.

RoboticsThe robotics category has always been robust at CES Asia and the 2019 show was no exception. While we continue to see innovation in task-based systems, we also see more social robots emerging who have a more interactive service orientation. The addition of AI across robotics platforms is greatly enhancing the capabilities of these systems design to work—and even play— alongside humans, ushering in a new are of human-machine partnerships. 5G is expected to level-up the capabilities of robots even further.

For example, it detects driving conditions, prevents tired driving and alerts drivers if they do lose consciousness, and also detects motion from passengers e.g. children or pets left in the car mistakenly.

Honda announced its smart assistant driving system at CES Asia 2019. By collaborating with Alibaba Group and iFLYTEK, Honda jointly developed the third-generation Honda CONNECT. Alibaba owns the most popular driving navigation and digital mapping company AUTONAVI, and iFLYTEK provided the voice recognition technology. With these capabilities, Honda CONNECT provides real time assistance to drivers for route optimization based on relevant information like traffic patterns, weather forecasts, real time news, etc. Honda also demonstrated its latest achievements in the field of open innovation, with the core of this strategy centered on the Honda Xcelerator China. The Honda Xcelerator China seeks to collaborate with more local Chinese startups to develop auto technologies together.

The vehicle technology exhibits at CES Asia 2019 showed us how mobility will change in the near future and beyond, from self-driving robo-taxis to vehicles that adapt to our emotional state. We also observed the automotive industry taking another step toward an all-electric future that may be closer than we think. And finally, CES Asia 2019 demonstrated the vehicle technology arena is a conflux of trends with AI and 5G poised to revolutionize mobility in ways previously described in science fiction.

FACING 2020Based on our experience at CES Asia 2019 we can be certain the Asian consumer technology market will undergo significant change over the next several years, mostly as a function of 5G networks developing around the region, but particularly in China. Therefore, new opportunities will be closely linked to the pace of 5G development across the region. We also anticipate broader applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across the economy to enhance user experiences, improve outcomes and enable new services. Looking ahead to 2020, we expect three key trends to impact the Asian market:

1. 5G begins to drive commercial applications in key cities and regions in Asia. In 2020 we expect 5G networks will take root in major cities and urban areas around Asia—especially in China, Japan and South Korea. This activity will empower consumers with enhanced mobile broadband but also enable the first commercial market plays for 5G in these densely populated locations. Most likely, emerging technologies currently under testing or limited deployments in urban areas (e.g., self-driving mobility solutions and remote patient care in hospitals) will be the first commercial services to benefit from early 5G networks.

2. AR/VR technology will pair with AI to enrich use case applications and experiences. 2019 has been a year of hardware innovation for AR/VR with many advances in display resolution, optics, weight reduction, wireless headsets and much more. 2020 will likely be an inflection point as the realms of AR/VR and AI merge to unleash the next wave of XR technology innovation. Congruent with other technology categories, the addition of AI will bolster the functionality, utility and ease of use of AR/VR hardware and applications. This in turn will help drive adoption of the technology across consumer and commercial domains. Ramping 5G networks will be another catalyst for innovation and adoption of AR/VR solutions, as the new network is well-suited to handle the vast video data capacity demanded by AR/VR.

3. The future of mobility becomes a commercial reality. We’ve seen no shortage of self-driving vehicle testing and pilot projects operating across China and Asia over the past couple of years. But 2020 is when, for

Page 13: CES ATRENDS &sia 2019 TAKEAWAYSTechnology Co., Ltd.. The company is representative of the emerging digital scent technology industry Hyundai’s keynote included its new AI and 5G

CES ASIA 2019 TRENDS & TAKEAWAYS | 12

some stakeholders, testing will be in the rear-view mirror. As mentioned above, the availability of 5G will make it more feasible to launch automated commercial services for transporting people and packages. Robo-taxis and automated package delivery systems will take to the streets in 2020 across Asia, but especially China. Although we will see limited numbers of vehicles from these services, they represent the first wave of a rising tide of automated mobility and delivery systems destined to

become more common in large Asian cities, collectively home to hundreds of millions of people.

If we say CES Asia 2019 showcased the future, then we can certainly say CES Asia 2020 will be when that future arrives. A future defined by a new IoT—the Intelligence of Things—and a future irrevocably underpinned by data.
