PREFACE

Generally in the Engineering Colleges, the study of Engineering Geology practicals are limited to one

semester, i.e. for about sixteen weeks or classes. Hence, only very relevant practicals from civil engineering

point of view need to be stressed.

The Engineering Lab (record) usually has three important topics, namely, study of minerals, study of

rocks and study of model geological maps.

Among these, the study of minerals is covered first logically in terms of description and identification

of common minerals with the aim of enabling the concerned engineers to assess the suitability of site

rocks for constructional purposes. It also aims to recognise the common economic minerals, if they

happen to come across during their constructional works (such as ghat road cuttings, quarrying, tunnelling,

reservoir locations so on) so that it is brought to the notice of geologists to evaluate their importance and

to exploit the same in Nation’s interest, if worthy. Rocks are named commonly based on their mineral

content and also possess their physical properties based on their mineral constituents.

Next comes the study of common rocks (i.e. igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks) dealing

with their description and identification. It takes into account not only the study of constituent minerals

but also their texture, structure, density (porosity), cementing material, acid reaction and appearance,

which influence the competence, durability and suitability of the rock. This is obviously of primary

importance from civil engineering point of view.

Then comes the study (interpretation) of model geological maps giving the geological details of

concerned areas in terms of topography, drainage pattern, slope, lithology, associating geological structures

(such as tilted, folded, faulted, unconformable and intruded strata), order of superposition, thickness of

beds and geological history, is learnt. This is of great importance from civil engineering point of view in

assessing the suitability of a site for location of dams, reservoirs and tunnels.

Thus these three aspects (study of minerals, study of rocks, study geological maps) are very important

in Engineering Geology practicals and therefore presented in this record, keeping in view the requirements

of civil engineering students.
