  • SONG OF THE HUMPBACK

    The singing of the whales is the collection of sounds emitted by whales to

    communicate; Baleen whales do not have the "phonic lips". Instead they

    have a larynx, which apparently has an important role in the generation

    of the sounds, but has no vocal cords. Two groups of whales, the humpback

    whale and blue whale subspecies that can be found in the Indian Ocean,

    are known to produce the known repetitive and different frequencies of

    sounds like whale song; Males of Humpback Whale interpret these

    vocalizations only during the mating season, so it is believed that the

    purpose of this song is to help the process of sexual selection. If the song is

    a competitive behavior between males seeking the same mate, a way of

    defining territory or whether behavior is "flirting" between males and

    females is not known yet and is a topic currently under investigation.
