Section I – DESCRIPTION OF UNIT
The Centre for Medical Education, located in Lady Meredith House, strives to
promote excellence and scholarship across the continuum of health professions
education. More specifically, the Centre for Medical Education aims to serve as a
resource for curriculum development and innovation; stimulate interest in educational
research and development; advance the field of health professions education through
scholarship; and ensure that research informs educational practice.
The Members of the Centre for Medical Education represent diverse backgrounds
and disciplines and are involved in:
Educational planning, curriculum design and program evaluation
Faculty development and educational consultations
Research in health professions education
Mentorship of students, residents, fellows and colleagues
Dissemination of educational innovations and research findings
Centre membership consists of 12 Core Faculty Members, each of whom devotes
at least one day a week to medical education activities, one Educational Researcher who
is at the Centre full-time, and 27 Centre Members, who devote at least one day a month
to research and development in medical education. Core Faculty and Centre Members
collaborate with individuals, departments and other organizations to advocate for
excellence in teaching and learning, scholarship at all levels of the educational
continuum, and improved health care. (Appendix I includes the names and departmental
affiliations of all Centre staff.)

Section II – PAST YEAR’S ACTIVITIES
TEACHING AND LEARNING
Members of the Centre for Medical Education have been involved in a number of
new and ongoing initiatives related to teaching and learning this year:
Undergraduate and Graduate Teaching
At the undergraduate level, Dr. Donald Boudreau continues to be responsible for
the design and implementation of the renewed undergraduate curriculum, which focuses
on the physician as “healer” and “professional”. The work of Drs. Richard and Sylvia
Cruess on Professionalism has had a major impact on the focus of this renewal, and Core
Faculty and Centre Members are involved in implementation at many levels. Drs. Miriam
Boillat and Yvonne Steinert are actively involved in the faculty development initiatives
designed to prepare teachers for the renewed curriculum, and Drs. Farhan Bhanji, Ron
Gottesman, Srinivasan Krishnamurthy, Sarkis Meterissian, Markus Martin, Saleem
Razack, Ruth Russell, Linda Snell and Mark Ware are Osler Fellows, responsible for
guiding and mentoring students over the four years of their undergraduate experience.
Drs. Jim Brawer, Radan Čapek, and Colin Chalk all serve as Course Directors in
the Basis of Medicine, the first 18 months of the undergraduate medical curriculum, and
in this role, they are able to integrate innovations in teaching, learning and assessment
into their courses. Dr. Jeffrey Wiseman is the Undergraduate Program Director for
Medicine, and in this capacity, he is able to implement curricular changes for students
throughout the McGill system. Until recently, Drs. Sarkis Meterissian and Saleem Razack
served as Program Directors for Surgery and Pediatrics respectively. In June 2007, Dr.
Meterissian became the Associate Dean for Postgraduate Education. Dr. Razack is now
taking the lead on the M3I admissions process and continues to promote research and
development to enhance the teaching and learning of core competencies for residents in
diverse specialties. Dr. Linda Snell is responsible for faculty-wide teaching and learning
of the CanMEDS competencies, and with colleagues at the Centre, designs and
implements numerous programs that address the diverse roles of physicians-in-training.
Electives in Medical Education
The Centre for Medical Education offers a variety of educational electives for
medical students and residents. This year we welcomed Dr. Michelle Sholzberg, a
second-year resident in Internal Medicine. Dr. Sholzberg spent one month at the Centre,
working with Drs. Linda Snell and Jeff Wiseman on a project examining the transition
from medical student to resident. Dr. Sholzberg became the Chief Resident in Medicine
in July, and she will continue with the next phase of her research project in the 2008/2009
academic year.
Confirmed participants in the electives program at the Centre for 2008/2009
include: Dr. Ilana Bank, a resident in the department of Pediatric Emergency Medicine
who will work together closely with Dr. Farhan Bhanji; Dr. Zubaida Alismaili, a resident
in Pediatrics and Nephrology, who will work with Dr. Saleem Razack; and Dr. Brett
5
Schrewe, another resident in Pediatrics, who will work with Drs. Saleem Razack and
Donald Boudreau. Interest in the electives program is strong, and additional participants
for 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 will be confirmed over the following months.
Postgraduate Fellowship in Health Sciences Education
A Postgraduate Fellowship in Health Sciences Education, modeled on the
Teaching Scholars Program, was specifically designed by Dr. Peter McLeod for senior
residents and fellows with an interest in medical education. To date, eight McGill
residents (three from Pediatrics; two from Surgery; one from Obstetrics/Gynecology; one
from Family Medicine; and one from Pathology) have completed their Postgraduate
Fellowship in Health Sciences Education. In 2007/2008 Dr. Matthew Cesari worked on
his scholarly project: “Negotiated Consensus: Just-In-Time Assessment to Align
Teaching and Learning in the Small-Group Setting”. Dr. Joanne Alfieri will complete her
project: “Development of an Interactive, Web-Based, Radiological Anatomy Learning
Module for Radiation Oncology Residents” this Fall. Both fellows are McGill residents.
Master of Arts in Educational Psychology, with an Emphasis
on Health Professions Education
Together with our colleagues in the Faculty of Education, we have developed a
new stream in the Master of Arts in Educational Psychology, focusing on Health
Professions Education. Our first students are halfway through their program, and two new
students have registered for the coming year. A number of former Teaching Scholars and
Postgraduate Fellows have also expressed interest in this program. Participants in this
program of study for the 2008/2009 academic year include: Dr. Kevin Waschke
(Gastroenterology at McGill), Ms. Donna Stanbridge (Nursing at McGill), Dr. Geneviève
Chaput (a recent graduate from l’Université de Montréal) and Heidi Clavet
(Physiotherapy in Ottawa). We are also currently planning for the new Master’s course,
“Current Issues in Health Professions Education”, which will begin in January 2009.
This course will be led by Dr. Linda Snell, who will be joined by Core Faculty and
Centre Members for specific topics. In many ways, the development of this new program
represents an important component of our collaboration with the Faculty of Education. It
should also be noted that McGill graduate Dr. Stuart Lubarsky, who spent six months at
the Centre last year, began his Master of Health Professions Education Degree at the
University of Maastricht in the Netherlands in June. He will also spend additional time at
the Centre in September.
IMEX (International Medical Educators eXchange)
In addition to the above mentioned McGill programs, and with colleagues from
Utrecht, Stockholm, Halifax and London (England), we developed the collaborative
initiative entitled IMEX (International Medical Educators eXchange). The goal of this
program is to broaden the perspective of experienced medical educators by enabling them
to visit three different medical schools over the course of two years. The first IMEX site
visit was held in October 2006 in Utrecht, Netherlands. The Centre hosted McGill’s first
group of IMEX scholars in May 2007, and we will host our second group of IMEX
scholars in May 2009. Dr. Sarkis Meterissian participated in the third rotation of IMEX
6
in the fall of 2007, in Stockholm, Sweden, and he will travel to Utrecht, Holland, in
October 2008. Dr. Jeff Wiseman is also an IMEX participant.
Faculty Development Workshops and Seminars
In the last twelve years, the Faculty Development Office has welcomed 2,100
faculty members, for a total of 5,400 “visits” to approximately 140 workshops. This past
year, close to 800 participants attended faculty-wide workshops, departmental seminars
and targeted/outreach workshops. Faculty-wide workshops this year included the
following:
Role Modeling: Making the Implicit Explicit
Searching the Literature for Evidence-Based Teaching and Learning
Designing Successful Workshops
Opportunities and Challenges in Teaching Culturally Diverse Learners
Effective Use of WebCT in Teaching and Learning
Teamwork: From a Group of Experts to an Expert Team
The Faculty Development Team has also been intricately involved in faculty-wide
initiatives at the postgraduate level, faculty development for teachers in the RUIS, and
the Health Canada initiative on Interprofessional Education and Practice. We have also
sponsored a number of departmental and site-specific workshops that target the specific
needs of faculty members. Outreach workshops this year have addressed the following
topics:
Evaluating Medical School Applicants
Giving Feedback
Role Modeling
Educating for Cultural Awareness
Evaluating Students and Residents
“Problem” Students and Residents
Leadership and Change Management
Conflict Resolution
Small Group Teaching
Effective Teamwork
In addition, we have organized a series of professional development activities for
Osler Fellows, teachers in our four-year Physician Apprenticeship course, in order to help
them achieve the course objectives. To date, these workshops have included:
The Physician as Healer and Professional
Narrative Medicine and Reflective Practice
Small Group Facilitation
Teaching Communication Skills
Making the Transition from Layman to Physician
7
It is our impression that faculty development for the Osler Fellows provides a
different kind of professional development, and we have started to study this process this
year.
Medical Education Rounds
In 2007/2008, the Centre for Medical Education and Faculty Development
continued to welcome faculty members and invited speakers to present their innovations
and research in medical education. Visiting speakers at Medical Education Rounds this
year included the following scholars:
Dr. Susan Brien, from the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI), who
addressed the topic of “Patient Safety: The Elixir of Core Competencies”
Dr. Karl Moore, from the Faculty of Management, who spoke on “The
Business of Health Education”
Dr. Shmuel Reis, from Haifa, Israel, who addressed the topic of
“Dilemmas of Moral Development in Medicine”
These individuals also spent time at the Centre discussing their areas of expertise
and promoting valuable exchanges with Centre Members. In addition, we welcomed Dr.
Deborah Danoff, Dr. Gary Dunnington, Dr. Bill McGaghie, and Dr. Lara Varpio to
meet with Centre members to discuss current topics in medical education.
Last year’s Teaching Scholars also presented their scholarly projects at Medical
Education Rounds as part of their graduation ceremony. The Teaching Scholars included:
Mrs. Linda Crelinsten - Medical Simulation Centre
Dr. Sender Liberman - Department of Surgery
Dr. Kevin Waschke - Department of Gastroenterology
In the coming year, we will welcome a variety of speakers to present at Medical
Education Rounds. Confirmed speakers for 2008/2009 include Dr. Saleem Razack and
Ms. France Drolet from McGill, our graduating Teaching Scholars, and Dr. Joseph B.
Martin from the Harvard Medical School.
Educational Consultations
Core Faculty and Centre Members provide educational consultations to
educational leaders and teachers in the Faculty of Medicine. This past year, Centre
Members and Members of the Faculty Development Team met with the Associate Deans
for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Education, undergraduate and postgraduate program
directors, and teachers in a number of specialties, on a routine basis to discuss teaching
and learning challenges, curriculum design and delivery, and medical education projects.
We also worked with members of all the schools within the Faculty of Medicine to help
promote interprofessional education and practice and we consulted with the Steering
Committee for the McGill Medical Simulation Centre to enhance teaching and learning in
this new educational environment. Whenever possible, it has been our goal to assist
8
individuals with program design and implementation and the promotion of scholarship in
teaching and learning.
Consultation themes have included:
The evaluation of new teaching tools (e.g. a new history-taking
simulation; the “deteriorating patient”; and a rheumatologic web-based
teaching module)
The assessment of summative examinations; course and curriculum
design; and protocol development (e.g. new anatomy curriculum; design
of interprofessional e-cases)
Manuscript reviews (e.g. on cultural training)
Career counseling (for faculty members, students and residents)
Visiting Scholars
In 2008, Peter Cantillon, a family doctor from Ireland, visited the Centre for
Medical Education for a period of six months. Dr. Cantillon’s main area of research
interest is clinical teaching and faculty development, and he carried out several
concentrated topics of investigation during this period. In addition, Dr. Cantillon
participated regularly in Centre meetings, visited a number of Canadian medical schools,
and attended the annual meeting of the Canadian Conference on Medical Education in
Montreal last May. His research interests enabled him to work closely with a number of
Core Faculty members, and collaborative efforts will continue in the coming year. Dr.
Cantillon’s sabbatical work was, in part, in preparation for his studies at the University of
Maastricht’s Ph.D. program in medical education.
RESEARCH
As noted in last year’s annual report, Core Faculty and Centre Members have
conducted and participated in research on many fronts. Research and development is one
of the main priorities for the Centre for Medical Education and our areas of focus
include:
Professionalism and Other Core Competencies
Faculty Development
Teaching and Learning
Program Evaluation
Appendix II describes current medical education research grants. Core Faculty
and Centre Members are involved in 26 externally funded educational grants, totaling
approximately $7,700,000. Appendix III includes Centre Members’ publications over
this same time period. Centre Members have published 32 articles related to medical
education in 2007, a number of manuscripts are currently in publication for 2008, and
several more are under review. It is worth noting that research grants, publications and
presentations at scientific meetings, which totaled 60 this year and are included in
Appendix IV, have increased significantly over the past several years; in fact, scholarly
9
productivity of the Centre has doubled in the past two years. A brief description of the
key research themes follows.
Professionalism and Other Core Competencies
A number of the Centre’s research activities have a direct impact on curriculum
development as well as teaching and learning at both the undergraduate and postgraduate
level. For example, Drs. Cruess’ and Cruess’ work on Professionalism has had a major
impact on the undergraduate curriculum, and together with Dr. Steinert, they have edited
a book on Teaching Medical Professionalism which will be published in 2008. Their
work on faculty development to promote the teaching and learning of professionalism
was also published in Academic Medicine this year.
Centre Members are also involved in a number of studies related to the teaching
and learning of the CanMEDS Roles. For example, Drs. Saleem Razack, Sarkis
Meterissian, Linda Snell and Yvonne Steinert have completed a study looking at the
teaching of communication skills in four disciplines: Internal Medicine, Pediatrics,
Surgery and Obstetrics-Gynecology. Results of this study, which have highlighted
important “cultural” differences across these disciplines, have led to changes in teaching
this content area to postgraduate trainees as well as a publication in Academic Medicine.
Drs. Razack and Snell, together with Dr. Hema Patel and colleagues in the Faculty of
Management have developed an innovative approach to teaching residents about the
Manager Role, and they have received a grant from the Royal College of Physicians and
Surgeons of Canada to conduct a randomized control trial to test the efficacy of their
approach. Other studies related to core competencies include work by: Dr. Linda Snell
and colleagues on a faculty-wide program for teaching; Dr. Helen McNamara and
colleagues on the Scholar Role; and Drs. Colin Chalk and Sarkis Meterissian on the
Academic Half-Day. Drs. Mary Ellen Macdonald and Saleem Razack have also
continued their work in the area of cultural competency for students and residents alike.
Faculty Development
Faculty Development studies, conducted primarily by Drs. Yvonne Steinert, Peter
McLeod, Miriam Boillat, Saleem Razack, and Michelle Elizov, include a survey of
faculty development activities across the country; the evaluation of specific faculty
development workshops (e.g. Writing for Publication; Designing Successful Workshops;
Effective Feedback); an analysis of why faculty members do not participate in organized
faculty development activities; and an exploration of why faculty members do attend.
Manuscripts submitted on the above workshop evaluations have been accepted for
publication in 2008, as has the study on Faculty Development: A Field of Dreams? Drs.
McLeod and Steinert, jointly with colleagues from the Centre, have also conducted a
series of studies related to teachers’ knowledge of principles of pedagogy, the results of
which have been disseminated widely and continue to have an impact on the content of
ongoing faculty development activities.
10
Teaching and Learning
With support from the Montreal General Hospital Foundation, Dr. Donald
Boudreau and colleagues at the Centre completed their qualitative study to explore
patient perspectives of the physician as healer and professional. Preliminary results of
this study have demonstrated intriguing conceptions of “physicianship”, the thrust of our
renewed curriculum; these findings will also have a significant impact on curriculum
design and delivery and have been accepted for publication in Academic Medicine.
Educational projects in the Basis of Medicine, the first 18 months of the
undergraduate curriculum, have also increased over the last few years. For example, Drs.
Čapek and Brawer have looked at predictors and motivators of lecture attendance in one
of the core units and the validity of global student ratings in another. In collaboration
with other Core Faculty members, they have designed a study to assess whether clinical
vignettes change summative and formative outcomes of multiple choice questions. In
addition, Dr. Brawer has looked at the value of a philosophical perspective in teaching
the basic medical sciences and has developed a unique approach to the teaching and
assessment of this content area.
Clinical teaching is another key focus, and two exemplar projects in this area
include Dr. Sarkis Meterissian’s work on the development of a Script Concordance Test
for intra-operative surgical decision-making and Dr. Chalk’s work with Dr. Stuart
Lubarsky on the development of a Neurological Script Concordance Test. Dr. Jeff
Wiseman has continued to work with colleagues in Education and has focused on patient
problem lists, clinical reasoning and diverse methods for promoting learning in the
clinical environment. Together with Dr. Linda Snell, he has also published his work on
the “Deteriorating Patient” this year. In addition, Drs. Jeff Wiseman, Linda Snell and
Yvonne Steinert were actively involved in the Health Canada initiative designed to
promote interprofessional education and practice, which came to a close at the end of this
academic year. Key aspects of this project were recently presented at an international
conference in Stockholm. Dr. Peter Mcleod, in conjunction with other Core Faculty, has
also continued his work on the ABC’s of pedagogy.
Additional projects that fall under the domain of clinical teaching include work
by: Dr. Bernard Charlin, an Affiliate Member from l’Université de Montréal, who has
developed and assessed the Script Concordance Test for clinical decision-making and has
inspired a number of research projects in this area at McGill; Dr. Ron Gottesman, who
has worked together with colleagues at McGill to design and assess simulated learning
environments, specifically for Pediatric Critical Care; Dr. Ruth Russell, who is studying
the nature of critical events in residency training programs; and Dr. Pierre-Paul Tellier,
who is conducting a qualitative study of medical students’ well-being and coping
behaviours.
Program Evaluation
With the introduction of the renewed undergraduate curriculum and the
development of new educational initiatives in the Faculty (e.g. Interprofessional
Education and Practice; the Medical Simulation Centre), a systematic approach to
11
program evaluation is underway. We are delighted that Dr. Sonia Faremo has joined the
Centre, and her major focus in the coming year will be program evaluation of
Physicianship. Together with Drs. Boudreau and Steinert, she is designing a number of
research studies to explore the process and outcome related to this curricular initiative. A
number of Centre members have also developed expertise in program evaluation, and
with colleagues in the Faculty of Education, will begin to design systematic evaluations
of new programs in order to facilitate policy formation and decision-making as well as
academic inquiry and scholarship.
As noted last year, Core Faculty and Centre Members have collaborated actively
with other departments and schools at McGill University as well as with American and
European researchers, and they have disseminated the results of educational innovations
and research studies widely (as noted in Appendix IV). Moreover, to promote
collaboration and dialogue with our colleagues at l’Université de Montréal, we are
planning our third annual joint educational research day on November 13th
, 2008.
ACADEMIC STAFF
As mentioned earlier, the Centre Staff consists of 12 Core Faculty Members, each
of whom devotes at least one day a week to medical education activities, and 27 Centre
Members, who devote at least one day a month to research and development in medical
education.
The Centre was pleased to welcome Dr. Sonia Faremo as an Educational
Researcher in 2008, an appointment created in conjunction with the Faculty of Education.
The focus of this position is on educational program evaluation within the new and
innovative curricular component of Physicianship, which aims to prepare medical
