• Organism – any living thing

• Cell – the smallest unit of living things that can carry out basic life processes– Life processes include • Reproduction• Movement• Respond to environment• Need nutrition• Eliminate waste• Grow

Cell Theory

1. All living things are made of cells.

2. Cells are the smallest unit of life (They are alive!)

3. Cells come from cells

Based on the work of Scleiden, Schwaan, and Virchow.

Page 4: CELLS

The Animal Cell • Cell membrane – layer around outside of cell, gives cell shape, controls what goes in and out

• Cytoplasm- gel-like substance that other organelles float in

• Nucleus – cell’s control center

• Mitochondria- supply energy to cell, break down food

• Vacuoles- membrane covered structures used to store food, water, & waste

Page 5: CELLS

The Plant Cell• Contains many of the same organelles as animal cells, but is more box like.

• Cell wall- stiff structure outside of the cell membrane that gives support

• Vacuole – single large vacuole

• Chloroplast – contains chlorophyll which converts energy from the sun into food for the plant

Organization of Cells

• Tissue – formed from cells of the same type• Organs- formed from tissues of the same type• Organ system – organs that work together to

perform a certain function
