HOLY CROSS HEALTH: A SYSTEM OF CARE

Holy Cross Health’s commitment to high-quality, efficient and safe health care has always been at the heart of everything we do.

In 2008, Holy Cross Health developed a vision for improving access and health care quality for the communities we serve. In recent years, we have strategically invested more than $450 million in the historic expansion of our health care facilities and services in Montgomery County, with the goal of anticipating—and proactively meeting—the health care needs of our diverse and changing communities.

Since last October, Holy Cross Health opened Holy Cross Germantown Hospital as the first new hospital in Maryland in 25 years; added a fourth Holy Cross Health Center that serves adults and children who face financial challenges; completed the largest expansion of Holy Cross Hospital in its history, bringing the benefits of private rooms to all patients; and opened our newest primary care center, Holy Cross Health Partners at Asbury Methodist Village. And as an owner of Maryland Physicians Care, we continue to enroll newly qualified members of our community into a comprehensive insurance program.

Today, Holy Cross Health stands as a robust, Catholic, not-for-profit health care system of connected hospitals, health centers, primary care sites and innovative community outreach and education programs that are working together to provide much-needed, high-quality health care to our entire community.

As we look ahead, we do so with much greater capacity to serve the needs of our community. As our communities’ health care needs grow and change, we will continue to provide the highest quality care to everyone, whatever their circumstances. This is the same commitment that inspired the Sisters of the Holy Cross to build Holy Cross Hospital more than 50 years ago, and we continue to take our mission to be the area’s most trusted health care provider seriously. Thank you for your continued support of Holy Cross Health.

PAUL IS BACK TO WORKAFTER COMPLEXSPINE SURGERY

H O L Y C R O S S G E R M A N T O W N H O S P I T A L

Paul Bennett was dealing with crippling back pain that made working at the job he loves virtually impossible. For the past 38 years, Paul has been a floral designer—a career that kept him standing all day to design arrangements and lugging heavy buckets of water up and down the stairs.

“It’s a physically demanding job and my back couldn’t take it anymore,” says the 62 year old.

Paul had developed a herniated disc and previous surgeries compli-cated matters. After discussing his options with orthopedic spine surgeon, Sanjog Mathur, MD, Paul chose to have his surgery at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital.

“Our surgeons perform hundreds of spine-related orthopedic and neurosurgical procedures each year,” explains Zachary Levine, MD, medical director, Neurosurgery, Holy Cross Health. “We offer expert diagnosis, the latest surgical technology and skilled staff to support advanced procedures like minimally invasive spine surgery.”

In 2015, Holy Cross Hospital earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Spine Certification. That same high level of care is also in practice at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital.

For Paul’s surgery, Dr. Mathur performed three procedures in all: a laminectomy, discectomy and spinal

fusion. “His herniation was quite large, plus he had instability in his back,” says Dr. Mathur. “The procedure, which took about six hours, was further complicated by scar tissue from his previous surgeries. I had to free up nerves to remove the disc and then fuse the last two levels of spine together.”

Dr. Mathur was able to perform the complex spine surgery through a five-inch incision, compared to much larger incisions that would have been used in the past. “The advantages of a smaller incision are less pain and a faster recovery,” Dr. Mathur says. “Today, we offer many new surgical techniques to improve patient outcomes.”

Our orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons perform the latest surgical procedures for the following conditions:n acute and traumatic injuries to the back and neck that affect discs, muscles, ligaments, bones, nerves and the spinal cordn congenital (hereditary) and developmental deformitiesn age-related diseases such as osteoarthritis, osteoporosis or spinal stenosisn degenerative diseases of the spine, spinal deformities including scoliosis, infections and tumors of the spine

“I was glad I made the choice to have my surgery at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital,” says Paul Bennett. “I completely trusted my surgical team.”

Paul was out of bed the day after his surgery and stayed just three nights at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, where the spacious private rooms have comfortable furniture, private bathrooms, cable television and Internet access.

“The hospital is state of the art and everyone is extremely nice,” Paul says.

In-home physical therapy and nursing visits from Holy Cross staff

helped to speed Paul’s recovery.Within two weeks, he was walking unassisted and driving a week later.

Thanks to a dedicated surgeon and Paul’s own efforts in physical therapy, Paul is back at work doing what he loves—creating floral works of art.

HOLY CROSS HOSPITAL’S HISTORIC EXPANSION

The seven-story South Building—a new landmark on the Capital Beltway—adds 232,000 square feet of space and houses 150 private patient rooms in critical care, intermediate care and medical-surgical units.

The new South Building at Holy Cross Hospital opened on November 1 on the Kevin J. Sexton Campus of Holy Cross Health, providing patients throughout the entire hospital with private rooms.

“The $190 million expansion and modernization of Holy Cross Hospital distinguishes Holy Cross Health as the only health care system in the region to provide private rooms to all patients,” says Kevin J. Sexton, president and chief executive officer, Holy Cross Health.

Both Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, which opened in October 2014, and now Holy Cross Hospital offer private rooms to every patient admitted.

The modernization and expansion project is helping Holy Cross Hospital strengthen its innovative senior care. A designated space for older adults has been included in the renovated surgery department and senior- friendly design elements are present throughout.

The “green” design meets all of the latest standards for sustain-ability—and the project is working toward obtaining Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification.

From the main entrance, a grand staircase, escalator and elevator provide access to a concourse that connects to the South Building.

The unique concourse, with large colored glass windows, connects Holy Cross Hospital’s main lobby to the new South Building.

A new Post Anesthesia Care Unit and renovated outpatient surgery area improve the surgery experience for patients, from admission to discharge. To learn more about

GYNECOLOGIC SURGERY GIVES DIANE WRIGHT PEACE OF MIND

“It’s a beautiful hospital and I’d recommend it to anyone,” says Diane Wright of North Potomac.

James Barter, MD

Ricardo Cook, MD

When 74-year-old Diane found a small external vaginal lump, she was concerned. Her day-to-day life was already jammed-packed taking care of critical health issues, including diabetes and kidney dialysis three days each week.

“I knew I had to take care of it,” Diane says. “Fortunately, I also knew the right doctor to call. A few years ago, a friend had recommended Dr. James Barter to me.”

James Barter, MD, medical director, Gynecologic Oncology Research, Holy Cross Health, is a gynecologic oncologist—a research-clinician with specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic cancers.

“Any genital lump should be looked at carefully,” he says. “The only way to confirm whether the growth is cancerous, precancerous—or benign—is to remove it and examine the tissue,” Dr. Barter adds.

Diane was relieved when Dr. Barter told her he could perform the procedure at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, just a few miles from her home. She chose to schedule her surgery for August.

To find a physician or surgeon at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, visit HolyCrossHealth.org or call 301-754-8800.

Holy Cross Health specialists at Holy Cross Hospital and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital perform more than 1,100 gynecologic and gynecologic oncology inpatient surgeries each year —more in Maryland than any other health system or hospital.

“Holy Cross Germantown Hospital’s experienced surgeons use the most advanced technology and techniques, including robotic surgery, to success- fully treat a wide range of conditions,” says Ricardo Cook, MD, chair of Surgery.

This advanced treatment is blended with compassionate care delivery. That translates into private rooms, a spacious preoperative area for patients and families, and a Post Anesthesia Care Unit staffed with skilled critical care nurses.

For Diane, her surgical experience was outstanding. “After a short time in the operating room and recovery, my husband was driving me home.”

Most important was Dr. Barter’s good news that the lump was a non-cancerous cyst. “I’m so grateful to everyone for helping me through the process,” she says.

Bernice Grossman’s love of Holy Cross comes from personal experience. Her son Bob was director of our Medical Adult Day Center until his death from cancer in 1997, the same year she lost her husband Lou. Both were well cared for at Holy Cross on and off for several years. Bernice says, “Bob and Lou received the best care possible. I am grateful for the kindness and comfort I received from everyone at Holy Cross Hospital.”

A long-time donor and supporter of Holy Cross Health, Bernice is especially proud of our mission to serve everyone who needs medical care, regardless of the ability to pay.

Bernice was a strong advocate for bringing the new Holy Cross Germantown Hospital to upper Montgomery County on the campus of Montgomery College, where she still continues to work at the age of 91. “This part of the county deserved an excellent hospital and I am thrilled to have Holy Cross Germantown Hospital here,” she says.

“The people at Holy Cross are so caring. You feel that from the minute you walk in until you go home,” says Bernice Grossman (right). “Holy Cross is part of my family.”
